Yesterday I went to a new salon for a little trim, and while waiting for my stylist, I saw a poster with an otter. Otters are nearly unbearably cute, as you probably know, so I had to read the accompanying text. The poster promoted Excess Access, an organization that helps people donate their unneeded goods to nonprofits. But there's a cool way that salons can participate: the hair for oil spills program.

Participating salons sweep up their hair clippings, then mail them to Excess Access. From there, the hair is stuffed into nylon stockings that are used to contain and soak up oil spills. Or, the hair is turned into hairmats that can soak up oil. What's more, the mats are made by at-risk kids transitioning out of foster care, so the program helps provide income fr them. It's a win-win situation, so consider talking to your local salon to see if they might want to help out. After all, how can you turn down a face like this?
