Are You a Plastic When It Comes to Your Hair and Makeup?

Yesterday I was taking a peep at an incredible photography series called Exactitudes, which chronicles the style "codes" of different social groups. I was impressed by how so many people who claim to have an individual look can actually end up being almost identical to one another, and also reminded of The Plastics, Mean Girls's matchy-matchy super clique. Have you ever expressed your beauty philosophy but still been part of a larger group, or are you a lone wolf, outside the beauty trends of the day?

-Oh and one more thing, the site is way too posy, everyone standing the same way, with the same amount of shirt slipped out of the their pants on the same side, hands in teh same place, its to staged to think these people were dressing like themselves and got photographed, they tried to make these people look like each other as much as they could....Just saying. lol

I'm not a big fan of the exactitudes site, i mean first off which of these people were trying to be unique, they have a page of butchers all in white coats, ummm ya its a uniform of course they look alike. Or guys wearing shorts but no shirt, but they make them all the same ethnicity, as if they wouldn't look similar. Or they have a page of muslim girls all in hijabs, none of them are wearing similar clothing or hijabs, yet they all look similar cuz they are all middle eastern with hijabs on. I don't get it. Maybe this is why so many people think everyone and their mom looks like someone famous or someone else they know. People don't pay attention to detail at all. Instead they generalize people by race, or hair color or anything general they can find about them. And i'm not a trend person either, however can't deny that i might look like someone out there with a similar outfit of jeans and sneakers on someday. Unless you make your own clothes and wear them only everyday, chances are your going to have some type of outfit that looks like someone else if you want to generalize it. I personally like the detail people put into their outfits when they are creative, and the detail in people. I don't think many people look like each other at all when you truly look at them.

I just wear what I like and what I think looks good on me...I don't really think about what other people are wearing too much and whether or not I am "standing out". I am perfectly happy just being me :)

Oh, I'd heard about Exactitudes a while back, and it robbed me of any illusions I might have had on this subject (though the project is fairly artificial I imagine.) I don't suppose this is just about following trends consciously though...

I've rarely ever seen anyone who was truly unique or different in their make up approach, almost everyone falls in to a type. Warm neutrals with lightly lined eyes and mascara with dewy skin and a little bit of gloss is just as much of a "look" as bright blue eye shadow and pink lipgloss or heavy dark goth style make up. There might be more groups or types of looks, but outside of runway/editorial make up...almost everything on the street looks like it's part of a group.

Hmm...I guess growing up around the big city and going to a fairly large college now, I belong to multiple groups and my style might be a blend of all of them + the style of women I admire for their looks like Brigitte Bardot and Audrey Hepburn. So I guess I'm answering yes and no for this one ;)

i did when i was younger. when i was in high school, mean girls came out, and i adopted the idea of wearing pink on wednesdays haha!

I suspect most of us followed fashion groupthink when we were young - teens and twenties. I sure did. However, the older I get the less likely I am to follow trends. I certainly watch them, and I take what I want from them (metallic eyeshadow! blue nail polish! berry-stained lips!) but I still do what works for me for the bulk of my routine.
