What We're Sweet On: Acne Treatment Without the Annoying Side Effects

One of the biggest problems with acne treatments is that while they wipe out spots, they often leave skin raw and irritated (not to mention how they can bleach and stain your bedding).

One of the biggest problems with acne treatments is that while they wipe out spots, they often leave skin raw and irritated (not to mention how they can bleach and stain your bedding). British beauty brand Medik8 is here to save your complexion and sanity with its Betagel Spot Treatment ($80). Made with azelaic acid to decongest and soothe, this nongreasy product goes on like an oil but instantly soaks into skin. And because it's not harsh — Medik8 is known as the "green cosmeceutical brand," after all — you can use it all over your face, not just on individual spots. Salicylic acid exfoliates and puts bacteria in its place, while niacinamide instantly takes down the redness. You'll love how quickly your riled-up skin will mellow out, and your sheets will love it too.

Never Have Cakey Concealer Again

Cake on the face may be a party-time shenanigan, but when it comes to makeup, cake on the face isn't quite as amusing.

Cake on the face may be a party-time shenanigan, but when it comes to makeup, cake on the face isn't quite as amusing. Celebrity makeup artist Pati Dubroff (who has worked with actresses like Julianne Moore, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Naomi Watts), says that the key to preventing cakey makeup from happening underneath the eyes is to think sheer layers. "It's like layering a cake," Dubroff explains. "You wouldn't just slap the frosting on."

To keep under-eyes bright and smooth, Dubroff recommends using a concealing pen, sweeping it on in a light, delicate layer. Follow by gently tapping it in with your fingers, and then repeat the sheer layering process until you reach your desired coverage amount. Finish by setting your work with an finely milled loose powder applied with the tiniest of makeup brushes. As for the cake, save that for birthdays and weddings.

What We're Sweet On: A Skin Care Regimen That Covers All the Bases

When a skin care system results in firm, smooth skin without leaving a tacky residue behind, consider it a winner.

When a skin care system results in firm, smooth skin without leaving a tacky residue behind, consider it a winner. Pevonia Spa Clinica's four-part Skin Perfecting Regimen ($96) — which includes a cleanser, toner, serum, and moisturizer — fulfills all of the above and then some. With retinol as the active ingredient in each of the products, skin gets a rejuvenating boost. Included are a foamy, nondrying cleanser; a refreshing, hydrating toner; a lightweight, fine-line-reducing serum; and a moisturizer that stimulates collagen production. And what you get is a complexion that's supple yet not dewy; firm yet not uncomfortably taut.

The premise behind Pevonia Spa Clinica, the sister line to Pevonia, is to offer a quick, easy customized routine that's ideal for those who can't make it to the spa. In essence, the beauty brand brings the aesthetician to you (well, at least through an online experience). When you head to the company's website, you are prompted to take a quiz to discover the best system for you, or you can even send in a photo of yourself and get a free Skype analysis with an aesthetician. Skin care tailored to your needs without having to leave your dwelling? We'll definitely have some of that.

What a Transformation: See How Anthony Hopkins Became Alfred Hitchcock

Hitchcock, the film that takes a look at the goings-on of Alfred Hitchcock and his inner circle during the filming of 1960's Psycho, recently came out on DVD. What happened behind the scenes of a movie that actually looks at life behind the scenes of a movie, however, is quite remarkable. Nominated for an Oscar in best makeup and hairstyling, the special effects makeup team of Howard Berger and Peter Montagna (nominated alongside hairstylist Martin Samuel), transformed legendary actor Anthony Hopkins into iconic film director Alfred Hitchcock.

Doing so didn't come without its challenges. "You have an actor like Anthony Hopkins, and you're faced with the task of taking one of the best-known actors in the world and transforming him into a perfect portrait of one of the greatest directors ever known," Berger explained. See what else he and Montagna had to say about the entire Hopkins-to-Hitchcock metamorphisis when you click through.
