Your Future Is Bryght: A New Furniture Line Is Raising the Bar

We'd all love to invest in quality furniture, but sitting down at that sleek new dining table can present some financial hurdles.
Affordable Modern Furniture | Bryght

We'd all love to invest in quality furniture, but sitting down at that sleek new dining table can present some financial hurdles. Luckily, a contemporary Canadian furniture brand is setting out to change that — and at no expense to your aesthetic. By cutting out the middlemen in the industry, Bryght allows people to essentially shop directly from the factories, shedding mark-ups associated with importers, distributors, and sales people — and effectively saving them an estimated 50 percent in the process. Better yet, the brand offers a free 30-day home trial period with free shipping and returns in North America: commitment-phobes, the line starts here!

High-design and high-quality, Bryght's contemporary and transitional collection comes from top international designers who've cut their teeth at companies like Established & Sons, Habitat, and Stella McCartney. In our opinion, it competes with the Crate and Barrels and Room & Boards of the world, but see for yourself. Here are a few of our top picks from the collection.

DIY: Wine Glass Candle Lampshades

In your blog travels, you may have come across the Dekoop Gorgeous Helen Wine Shades which tops off your wine glasses to make easy votive lamps for your parties.

In your blog travels, you may have come across the Dekoop Gorgeous Helen Wine Shades which tops off your wine glasses to make easy votive lamps for your parties. I couldn't get them off my mind for months when I first saw them; I thought they were so clever. Sadly, they are no longer available for purchase but then, lucky me, I came across a DIY to make them. The project is fairly simple, and allows a lot of room for creativity. You can leave yours as plain vellum, or punch decorative holes in them, screen-print them, or even paint them! It's up to you, but regardless, this project is fabulous, inexpensive, and perfect for that wedding you're planning!

Supplies:

Here's how, from Save On Crafts:

  1. Download and print out this lampshade pattern.
  2. Trace the pattern onto your vellum sheet. Cut out the shape with your regular scissors. If you want, you can use decorative bladed scissors along the bottom edge to add another element to the shade.
  3. If you like, use a paper punch to punch holes evenly or haphazardly throughout the shade, as shown in the PDF.
  4. Using the glue pen, apply a thin line of glue to one straight end. Wrap the other end over the glued end, and adhere together, forming the shade.
  5. Secure the tealight with the candle putty, and set the lampshade on top of your glass. Fini!

How to Hang Your Christmas Tree Lights

The Christmas tree may be an international icon, but you'd be surprised by how many people don't know how to hang lights on one.

The Christmas tree may be an international icon, but you'd be surprised by how many people don't know how to hang lights on one. Beginning tonight at 7 p.m. EST, the folks in Rockefeller Center will kick off their annual tree lighting celebration, so I thought I'd let you in on a few tips so you can join in on the fun and light yours too!

  1. Begin with a bare, undecorated Christmas tree that is seated firmly in its tree stand.
  2. Plug your string lights — which had better be LED lights — into an outlet to make sure they work before you get started. If they do not light, first make sure that none of the bulbs are broken. If so, replace the bulbs. If no bulbs are broken, you'll need to replace the fuse in the fuse panel on the pronged accessory plug. That should do it!
  3. Begin at the base of the tree and work your way to the top by weaving your string lights over and under the branches alternately as you go across.
Keep reading for the rest of the steps!

So, ever the snoop that I am, I did some poking around and discovered his wonderful blog, Living Life Out Loud.

It turns out that Courtney is pursuing a career in design and event planning and lives in a very charmingly decorated modern condo in Oakland, CA. It wasn't hard to convince him to let us take a tour of his house, and after seeing it, I am convinced that he has very bright career ahead of him. Come along and take a look!

A 19th Century New Orleans Shotgun Gets a Modern Addition

In New Orleans, there is no shortage of beautifully restored homes.

In New Orleans, there is no shortage of beautifully restored homes. With such charming, unique architecture, it's not a city where people make a habit of tearing things down and putting McMansions in their place. That said, it's rare to see a historic restoration that incorporates contemporary design — moreover successfully so. I was lucky to tour one of these rarities firsthand during my last trip to the Crescent City.

I learned after graduating from Tulane University that my graphic design professor, Robert Gassiot, and his partner Michael Clement had purchased a 19th century New Orleans shotgun and were in the process of restoring it and giving it a modern addition. It took three architectural drawings until the plans were finalized; the scope of the project included removing an existing enclosed porch, which was added in the '20s, gutting and restoring the kitchen and laundry/bathroom, and building a modified "camelback" tower in the rear with a modern architectural style.

When I visited in February, the project was essentially finished, and I was invited to spend a day with Robert and Michael, touring the space and learning about the project. The duo have tackled five previous renovations and have a strong interest in interior design, as well as in collecting local art. Michael, a landscape designer, made use of his skills by turning the backyard into an oasis for entertaining, dining al fresco, and relaxing. Michael is also an artist and sculptor, and many of his exquisite sculptures and lighting designs can be seen throughout the house.

Come take a look. Prepare to feel a pang of envy; you are in for a treat!

Earlier this month, our pals at ShelterPop gave us a peek at Costa Mesa, CA-based design firm Pal + Smith's new 4,000-square-foot storefront. The space is high on glam factor and bursting with color and quirk — my favorite style to a T. Co-owner Melissa Palazzo says, "My favorite thing about our new store is the book wall! The 16-foot tall bookcase houses my latest must reads on lifestyle subjects including architecture, photography, music, and fashion." I would have to agree that it's my favorite as well! I have a funky little ledge in my living room, and I've been displaying my art and design books in the same fashion for some time; I love it! Morever, this space just has a brilliantly eclectic mix of furnishings. From the moody skill drawing to the glamorous crystal chandelier to the wild zebra rug, there's a little bit of everything.

The best way to re-create this look, of course, is to head straight to Pal + Smith's new store. But since it's a trek for most of us, I thought I'd round up some furnishings that re-create this style. The Paul Smith Love Too needlepoint wallhanging ($3,125) would be right at home in this space. Another quirky and posh piece is the Paul Loebach Distortion Candlestick ($24); I love surrealist, melting shape. Click the product images to shop the rest of this look!

Desire/Acquire: Globe-Shaped Crystal Chandeliers

It's probably a good thing my landlord won't allow me to replace any of my light fixtures; otherwise, I'd be very tempted to drop a grand on something like the 19th C. Casbah Crystal Chandelier ($850-$1,395) from Restoration Hardware. The arresting, sparkling lantern, which is available in a few sizes, is strung with hundreds of multifaceted crystals, which are each polished by hand. The symmetry of the globe shape makes it a really versatile piece, which I could see in a few different places around my home. If only.

It turns out, there is a much more affordable option for those of you out there who are on the hunt for a new crystal chandelier.

Abigail Ahern's Quirky, Animal-Loving Home Will Convert You to the Whimsical World

Whenever I take those "style quizzes" for fashion or interior design, no matter how hard I try to fix the answers, I'm always awarded the "whimsical" description.

Whenever I take those "style quizzes" for fashion or interior design, no matter how hard I try to fix the answers, I'm always awarded the "whimsical" description. All right already. I'm whimsical (aka nuts!). I get it. I'm OK with it, because I'm not the only one who likes a little quirk. Take British interior designer Abigail Ahern, whose home photographer Todd Selby recently shot. Ahern's home is brimming with quirky style. Her sense of scale is so wild, touring her home feels like stepping into a scene from Alice in Wonderland. Bright or deep, she doesn't shy away from color, and there's an idiosyncratic accessory, often an animal item of some sort, on every tabletop.

Sounds looney tunes, right? Not so much. In fact, it's pretty stunning. Come take a tour of Ahern's home, and then try to tell me you don't love whimsical interiors!

Shaw Floors' 30 Days of HGTV Kicks Off Today — Vote and Win!

In July, I joined nine other design bloggers for an opportunity of a lifetime in North Carolina: a design challenge, hosted by Shaw Floors, to build a room from the ground up using a selection from the new HGTV Home Flooring by Shaw Floors line, which includes carpet, area rugs, hardwood, and laminate.

After being split into teams of two, Katy of Charles & Hudson and I chose a fabulous gray carpet and designed a cozy, chic, "urban bachelorette pad" from scratch in less than two days! I recapped the whole experience last week, so be sure to read all about how our room came together.

The experience was a blast from start to finish, and now I get to announce how all that hard work pays off for all of us! Our room (and our competitors' four other rooms) are part of Shaw Floor's 30 Days of HGTV campaign, which kicks off today. You can vote for your favorite room every day in September, and each day you vote you'll be entered to win a whole entire room of flooring!

Voting is easy! To enter, just like Shaw Floors on Facebook, click on the 30 Days of HGTV Home tab on the left, enter your email address, register, click Get Started, and then cast your vote for your favorite room! And, of course, this goes without saying, but Katy and I will be happy as clams if you vote for our room design!

Get the Look: Retro, Polynesian Kitsch

Secrets From a Stylist star Emily Henderson shared one of her recent room makeovers on her eponymous blog.

Secrets From a Stylist star Emily Henderson shared one of her recent room makeovers on her eponymous blog. The clients described themselves as "tiki meets vintage Japanese cowboy meets atomic kitsch" and what she turned out is some variation of that: "retro polynesian kitsch," as she calls it. I think there's a major possibility that this mixture of styles could fail miserably; too many styles in one space can become pretty confusing, so I like how Emily pared it back.

I supplemented the two standouts of the space, the Two's Company Hanging Rattan Chair ($406) and the Florence Broadhurst Japanese Bamboo Wallpaper ($450), with a few more Polynesian, retro, and kitschy finds. Some of my favorites are the Ceramic Tiki Mugs ($24) from Urban Outfitters; if you're going to go kitschy and tiki, it should be in small bits, such as on the tabletop. Another item I particularly like is the Anthropologie Delicate Division Vase ($16); it has a very subtle Polynesian look to it, and I love how it pulls the reds and golds from the room. DIY Erin Martin's Socket Sconce For Under $16!

In the new September/October issue of CA Home+Design, we take a tour of the home of St. Helena wine country family The Witts, which was designed by local designer Erin Martin.

In the new September/October issue of CA Home+Design, we take a tour of the home of St. Helena wine country family The Witts, which was designed by local designer Erin Martin. One of my favorite elements of the rustic industrial space is the branch-like socket sconce above the sink, which Martin made herself by screwing several sockets together and filling them with Edison bulbs.

I've seen similar DIY light fixtures but this one works particularly well with the space, which isn't too precious in any way — see the exposed pipes and the rope handle on the glass shower door? This project is brilliant not only because of it's affordability, because it requires literally no rewiring at all.

Supplies:

  • Y-shaped socket adapters ($1.90). Just a few for a sconce or a dozen or so for a chandelier. Erin chose black ones, but white sockets are also available.
  • Edison-style bulbs or small, round opaque bulbs, with a standard base.

Here's how:

  1. Take one Y-socket adapter and screw two more adapters into its openings. Continue until you are happy with the branch-like shape.
  2. Now, screw the lightbulbs into the empty openings.
  3. Screw the original socket splitter into a socket on a wall and your sconce is finished! To make a chandelier, screw the original splitter into the socket on a standard hanging light cord kit.

Do You Use a Real Bookcase?

I don't have a bookcase or bookshelves, but I do have a fair amount of books.

I don't have a bookcase or bookshelves, but I do have a fair amount of books. In my bedroom, I store them by stacking them and propping them up on my nightstand. In my living room, there's a ledge where I set my coffee table books with their covers facing forward. I've also learned to use little odds and ends, accessories, and books themselves as bookends. I actually used to simply stack my books on the floor in one tall, wobbly column. Because I'd rather not take up more space with a bookcase, I just make do without one.

How about you? Do you store your books on a real bookcase or bookshelves? Or do you keep them on a table or somewhere else?

If relaxation is your goal, having an in-house masseuse and a room dedicated for professional rubdowns is a bright idea. But since money doesn't grow on trees, hanging from the trees is the next best thing. Install a hammock outside or inside your home, and help yourself unwind, de-stress, and take a load off. Whether installed in the sun or the shade, the gentle motion of rocking side to side will put your mind and your body at ease. Plus, it will also bring a laid-back look to your home. Let's take a look at how some decorators have used the hammock indoors and out.

Strike Up a Linear Theme

While using repeated motifs or patterns, such as stars, ikat, or suzani, throughout a room can certainly be cute, sometimes a more subtle approach is easier on the eyes.

While using repeated motifs or patterns, such as stars, ikat, or suzani, throughout a room can certainly be cute, sometimes a more subtle approach is easier on the eyes. I love this living area in the portfolio of photographer Per Magnus Persson, but it took me a few minutes to figure out why. Then I realized that there's a linear theme that pulls it all together. Playing off of the repeated pattern of the staircase in the room, a set of boldly striped chaises, a powder-coated steel chair with a linear frame, and a framed piece of artwork with text arranged in a column all continue the linear theme. Most of the pieces in the room are also modern in style, which helps to create a cohesive look as well.

Luckily, this linear look is really easy to re-create, and it will work with any budget! Of course, striped textiles are a foolproof beginning. You can also try décor with pleats, furniture with a linear openings, or a mirror with a textured frame. The next time you're shopping at a furnishing store, keep your eyes peeled for repeated shapes and see what theme you can come up with!
