You may not be familiar with the name Lupita Nyong'o, but you should be. Not only is she one of the stars of 12 Years a Slave, which is already generating a whole lot of Oscar buzz, but she's also on the verge of completely blowing up the beauty world, and for good reason. Lupita is clutch at pairing bright, bold colors with her makeup on the red carpet . . . a talent not many women have. But when you're brave enough to rock a shaved head, bright hues are just a stroll in the park. Ahead, we have 22 red carpet reasons why Lupita should be on your radar.
Party hopping? No matter how amazing you look when you walk out the door (and you definitely do!), sometimes things happen. But keeping a mini emergency kit can help you avoid serious mishaps. Grab a cute pouch, and stuff it with some of these must-have items:
- Mini deodorant: Getting asked if you're dating anyone over and over again at dinner can really make you sweat, so keep a deodorant on hand for when you need a little extra protection.
- Pain reliever: That red wine that you're swilling in order to get through dinner can make your head spin, but an emergency stash of aspirin can help you get back on your feet.
- Hand lotion: Cracked, dry hands are the worst party accessory. Keeping some lotion in your emergency kit will make sure your fingers stay smooth.
- Travel perfume: Sephora gives out free samples of all its fragrances. Just ask a sales associate for a sample, and you can stash one in your bag for when you need a little lift.
- Travel toothbrush and toothpaste: With all the eating that goes down on the holidays, keeping a toothbrush and toothpaste in your emergency kit is a necessity.
- Makeup stain: A stain like Stila Lip and Cheek Stain ($24) can be used in a bunch of ways, making it the perfect makeup-in-a-pinch product.
- Detergent pen: Spill something on your party dress? Kiss that stain goodbye with that handy detergent pen you have hiding in your purse.

If there's anyone who will buck the traditional big hair, big beauty looks, and big everything that's typical to Texas, it's Kristen Stewart. The actress was one of many guests, including Lily Collins and Dakota Fanning, sitting pretty at Chanel's annual Metier d'Arts show, which was staged by Karl Lagerfeld in Dallas. Kristen opted for that sideswept bed head we've come to expect from her, whether she's running for a flight or sitting front row at Fashion Week. She vamped up the look with a seriously smoky eye that had her shadow blended and extended to created an exaggerated cat eye.
Lily also paired some grungy waves with an after-dark makeup look, but instead of focusing on the eyes, Lily swept a deep red lipstick across her lips. She created an ombré look by focusing the dark lip color on the outer part of her lips to add some edge. Dakota went Parisian gamine with her twisted updo that wrapped across the crown of her hair. She complemented the look with flirtatious winged liner and a pretty pink pout. The people of Dallas may have raised a brow or two over the fashion-forward beauty looks these ladies brought to town, but we love a girl who can shake things up. We're curious, which look was your favorite of the night?
Braids and updos don't have to be mutually exclusive ideas in the world of hair. Pretty plaits have a place alongside chignons, while box braids can look edgy mixed into an over-the-top bun. Or just take a nod from Kelly Osbourne (above), and braid a ponytail before twisting it into a bun. Talk about a perfect marriage! We've rounded up four more styles that are even sweeter when you add a braid (or many). For instant inspiration, just keep scrolling!

What happens when anime and beauty collide? We get a gorgeously girlie makeup palette, and that's exactly what the collaboration between Shu Uemura and Japanese artist Takashi Murakami has delivered. The Heart-Full Pink Parallel Eyes and Cheek Palette ($69) contains a smattering of pretty pink makeup hues. Seven iridescent and satin eye shadows dance around a cheek color, which are perfect for creating a delicate, feminine look. The kit also contains two dual-sided shadow brushes for ultimate flexibility in your makeup application. But what we love most about this palette is the adorable illustrations that decorate the front of the case, bringing us back to our Sunday mornings watching Sailor Moon with a bowl of Cheerios. Who doesn't love some nostalgia with their makeup?
It turns out that Jennifer Aniston — aka one of the biggest hairstyle icons of our day — has a few celebrity hair crushes of her own. In an interview with Parade magazine, she said, "I think Gisele [Bündchen] has exquisite hair. That's a pretty envious head of hair. I love Kate Moss. She always has great hair."
Perhaps Jennifer misses her long locks since she recently chopped off her length in favor of a chic bob. Jennifer, Gisele, and Kate all have some of the best hair in Hollywood, but we want you to fess up and tell us whose mane you love the most in the poll below!
Pantone has chosen its color of the year for 2014, and the winner is Radiant Orchid. The color is gorgeous for a lot of reasons, but if you're unsure of how to actually wear it, you're in luck. We have three products for you to try on your eyes, lips, and nails, so you can rock this trendy shade all year.
There's a lot to love about Lorde. Besides having one of the top songs in the country right now (“Royals”), the 17-year-old crooner from New Zealand has been nominated for four Grammy awards including artist of the year and song of the year. While her music résumé is stellar, we're giving her top honors to her beauty look. Lorde's mass of kinky curls have been the subject of many discussions, but we're also keen on her gothic-rocker makeup look. The pale face, flick of eyeliner, and vampy lipstick combo has become her signature style. And it makes her doll-like features pop on stage when she's performing.
Though Lorde pulls off that nearly black lipstick with ease, many women fear wearing ultradark colors. But it's more wearable than you think — and is a great juxtaposition with a girlie party dress. You just need the right technique.
"The best way to wear black lipstick is with dewy skin, a flushed cheek, and a natural eye," said Lijha Stewart, pro educator for Make Up For Ever. "Try wearing a purple-based lip pencil underneath your lipstick as a base color." Stewart suggests Make Up For Ever's Aqua Lip in 13 Purple ($24), and we've got 10 more shades for you, below. Shop your favorites and make Lorde proud.
Turns out our favorite female celebrities aren't the only ones sporting extensions. Daniel Radcliffe appeared on the UK's Graham Norton Show with surprisingly long hair. "It's like you have to pull back a curtain to talk to me," he quipped, joking about his chin-length bob. When asked if it was his own hair, Daniel replied, "It's hair, I assume, from a dead person or someone who donated their hair." Daniel's new hair addition is for his latest role as Igor in Frankenstein, which stars James McAvoy in the titular role. Will he keep the hair after shooting is done? Only time will tell.
This year was a big one for color cosmetics, especially when it came to bright makeup. Turquoise blues, hot pinks, and pastel whites were all major trends in makeup and nails in 2013, which made every beauty maven squeal with glee. And while we already know that Radiant Orchid is poised to be one of 2014's hottest colors, we can't help but hope some of the hues below make it through 2013. Keep scrolling to see some of the hottest pigment trends of the year!
White Eye MakeupSure, white may be the absence of color, but this shade made eyes pop in 2013. It was sketched in close as eyeliner and washed across the lid as shadow, proving that this seemingly simple hue is more than versatile.
Hot Pink LipstickWe gave our red lipsticks a break this year and embraced a sexier shade: hot pink. Diane von Furstenberg showed off the hue for Fall, and we taught you how to apply it with ease. This color looks gorgeous in the colder months, so you can keep wearing it through the holidays!

Imagine if Coachella met Fashion Week but in a gallery setting, and you've got Art Basel, the three-day art festival that just wrapped up in Miami over the weekend. Sartorial stars like Gabrielle Union, Eva Longoria, and Jessica Hart mingled with musicians and artists to soak up the sun and check out the art. And in addition to the art that was shown on a grand scale, we zoomed in on the art that happened on a smaller scale. So micro, in fact, that it was spotted on people's nails. Whenever beauty app designer and nail queen of Instagram Hannah Bronfman shows up to a party, you know the manicures are going to be great. But other ladies were upping their nail A-game, too. Scroll on for our favorite looks.
One showgoer showed off her handiwork with some NCLA It Don't Matter Nail Wraps ($16).
Going along with the art theme of the week, this fashion girl painted Banksy and Shepard Fairey prints all over her fingertips.
This woman opted for some sketched-on eyes to decorate her mini canvases.
A gilded manicure and turquoise eyebrows made for a surprisingly awesome pairing.
We were all speed-dialing our colorists when we spotted Sienna Miller's rose-gold hair at last week's British Fashion Awards (above left). But our happiness was short-lived, as Sienna stepped out for a Stella McCartney party just two days later looking like most of her color had washed out (above right). But the inspiration lives on, especially with New Year's Eve right around the corner — providing us with the perfectly festive opportunity to try out temporary dye.
Blondes like Sienna can adopt her rose-gold color by using just a touch of pink dye, while ladies with darker locks might reach for a pink that's just a bit brighter — or play with new colors altogether. To get a dye job like Sienna's, focus the pigment on the middle section of your hair, keeping the hue out of your roots and away from the ends. This will add just a touch of color in an edgy, unexpected way. Then, when you're ready to be done with the color, simply shampoo and carry on with your natural color. Shop our favorite wash-out colors below!
Naya Rivera stepped out with some serious crimps in her hair last night at the Trevor Project Benefit in LA, but these weren't the kinks that plagued our misguided middle school years. Newly engaged Naya knew to sex up her crimps instead of succumbing to Kimmy Gibbler syndrome. Starting with a deep side part, Naya kept her crimps medium-size and cohesive, leaving the ends just a little undone and frizzy.
"The easiest way [to pull off the trend is] to buy an inexpensive crimper," explains Kattia Solano, the owner of Butterfly Studio Salon in NYC. "If you can't, use a small curling iron and use it in the opposite way to create lines. For some hair types, sleeping with braids overnight on clean hair can create a similar effect." Feeling inspired, we took a trip down memory lane to some of the biggest crimping moments in recent history.
Tyra Banks, 1998Tyra's crimps proved how curly girls could have some flexibility with their style. "It's best to start with a smoother texture," Solano advises ladies with curly or natural hair. "Blow-dry the hair first using tension to make your curls a little more sleek and pulled out."
See more big moments in crimping after the jump.
Frizz seems to be the one hair woe that affects all women regardless of hair type, mainly because it sprouts up for a number of different reasons. While some women have figured out ways of keeping their fuzz down day to day, there are times when those pesky hairs pop up regardless of what you do to avoid them. When you're stuck in a hairy situation like this, there are easy ways to disguise the pouf that seems to be taking over your head:
- Try some hair oil: Hair oils are a more natural serum when it comes to zapping frizz. Work something like Kiehl's Smoothing Hair Oil Concentrate ($25) into your hair to depuff instantly.
- Slick on some moisture: Start by sweeping some lotion onto your arms and legs. When you're done, run your fingers through your hair, avoiding the roots. The thin layer of moisturizer will smooth down your frizz. Just make sure to use a light touch or you could find yourself with a greasy situation.
- Spritz some hair spray: Spraying some directly onto your hair won't do much, so try this handy trick — mist a lightweight hair spray, like Oribe Superfine Hairspray ($19) onto the palms of both of your hands. Before it has time to dry, swipe your hands over your hair, focusing on the frizziest spots. The spray will keep the fuzz at bay without weighing it down.
- Snag a dryer sheet: If you're running out the door and don't have any product on hand, reach for a dryer sheet. Smooth it over your hair for a quick way to remove your frizz. Bonus: this technique also works if you're hair is full of static, another major hair woe in the Winter.
If there's one thing that Nicki Minaj is known for (aside from her catchy music, that is), it's her over-the-top beauty looks. You have to give the girl credit: she continually ups the ante by wearing a variety of makeup palettes and extreme hairstyles. The raptress celebrates her 31st birthday today, and to celebrate, take a look back at some of the best beauty moments of her career. Happy birthday, Nicki!
