Make: Diaper Bag Turned Stylish Camera Bag

This helpful and handy how-to post comes to us from OnSugar blogger Just 5 More Minutes, who shows us how to turn a diaper bag into a useful photography bag: My camera goes everywhere with me — especially on our Airstream trips. Sometimes I feel uncomfortable carrying around a camera bag that just screams, "There is an expensive camera in this bag." I wanted something more discreet and not so obvious yet stylish at the same time. I scoured the Internet trying to find an alternative. I wanted something that could carry all of my equipment as well as my personal belongings, so I didn't have to haul my purse along, too. No luck, at least, nothing I liked was out there.

My camera goes everywhere with me — especially on our Airstream trips.

Diaper Bag turned Stylish Camera Bag

Then I started thinking about diaper bags. Most of them come with pockets galore (perfect for lenses, etc.), and some of them can be rather stylish as well. I found this diaper bag at Nordstroms and I just fell in love. Doesn't look like a diaper bag, does it? Or even a camera bag for that matter. The only problem was that the bag was not padded — but it did come with a diaper changing pad.

I started thinking I could easily eyeball the sizes of the inside pockets and "cut out" from the diaper pad pieces that could snugly encase my lenses.

So that's what I did.

HP Veer 4G Review

This review of the HP Veer 4G comes from our own areitz, who tells us all about the latest webOS device on his blog, Andy's brain OnSugar: If you're in the market for a smartphone that isn't an iPhone, and you don't think that you're ever going to want to listen to music on said phone, the Veer 4G ($100) might be worth a look.

This review of the HP Veer 4G comes from our own areitz, who tells us all about the latest webOS device on his blog, Andy's brain OnSugar:

If you're in the market for a smartphone that isn't an iPhone, and you don't think that you're ever going to want to listen to music on said phone, the Veer 4G ($100) might be worth a look. However, due to the poor experience with the headphone jack, and high price (compared to the iPhone 3GS), I really can't recommend this phone.

According to HP, the small size of the Veer shouldn't translate to a lack of functionality. The phone has a 2.6-inch 320x400 multitouch display, an 800Mhz CPU, 512Mb of RAM, and 8GB of flash storage. But it's the size of the Veer that is easily its most impressive feature. It's hard to describe how small it is — you just have to hold it in your hand to see. It's so small that I was frequently worrying about losing it. I don't think it's possible to make a phone much smaller (maybe you could do this size, but thinner). I did like carrying it around, and as I have shifted more of my non-Mac time to the iPad, I could see having a smaller, less powerful phone that is something of a "tablet companion." That being said, I think that for all-around use, the 3.5-inch display in the iPhone is probably the sweet spot, in terms of still being pocketable, yet providing a good size for use. Yet there might be a killer product in the space — I could see how people might prefer a smaller phone, like the Veer.

Although I'm constantly surfing fashion, beauty, and accessory sites for the latest trends and products, I must admit there's a little tech geek inside me somewhere. Every now and then, I find myself surfing the web for the newest in gadgetry and, for quite a while now, my eyes have been set on Apple's iPad. But just like any other investment I make, I like to do my research on the product and the accessories that go along with it. So what have I found to be one of the best parts about owning an iPad? Well, shopping for the right iPad accessories seems to be way more fun!

A Blogger Dishes Strategy Tips For PopSugar's Retail Therapy

The OnSugar blog Stylish With Substance gives us some helpful tips and tricks to getting started on our new Facebook game, PopSugar's Retail Therapy.

The OnSugar blog Stylish With Substance gives us some helpful tips and tricks to getting started on our new Facebook game, PopSugar's Retail Therapy.

PopSugar has started their own brand new Facebook game, and it's for shopping/clothing. (Why not FabSugar then? Anyway....)

In the game, called "Retail Therapy", the player owns her own boutique and buys/sells fashions. One also makes an avatar after him or herself, like usual, but this time we get to download ours for display on the web, etc. That's me (or the Amazonian-me with washboard abs) to the right! If you'd like to check it out and play, I want to first give you tips so you don't make the same mistakes I already made as a newbie. I always mess up the beginnings of my FB gaming, somehow. But now you will have a head start!

  • It's built for a strategy just like those Facebook restaurant games. So you'll want to place your "storage" containers (where the inventory comes in) near the clothing tables/racks as well as near the register (as seen in the screen capture below). Otherwise in the beginning of the game, when it's just "you" working, some customers could get too impatient to purchase, or perhaps you'd just dilly-dally too much to bring in inventory fast enough.

My First Week With My iPad

This iPad review comes from OnSugar blog all.things.foof.

This iPad review comes from OnSugar blog all.things.foof. from reader missiza:

So naturally, as with most things, you keep saying the name and it grows on you. That's kind of how the progression of accepting the name of my new magical and evolutionary device came to be. And though once in a while I still cringe at its name, I am still quite content with my purchase of the 64GB 3G iPad.

Here's the good:

  • It's fast. It's faster than my existing net book at home.
  • The battery life is just what I was hoping for (and expected with Steve Jobs claim of ~10 hrs of battery life.). In the full 10 days of usage (note not consistent hour by hour usage), I've had to charge the iPad twice.
  • The Scrabble experience on the iPad is amazing. I've played it using iPods and between 2 iPad owners . . . I can only hope that there are many more group games following this experience. (hint, hint for Monopoly)
  • Web browsing through Safari is pretty amazing . . . despite the lack of Flash support.
  • Magazines look great on the iPad, well . . . at least the TIME magazine through it's app looks pretty good. I really can't wait to see more magazine pubs offer their magazines through either their own app or through the iBook store.
  • One of the better experience in sharing photos from my holidays is through the Photo app on the iPad. Because it's screen is so large, you definitely won't miss a thing as you flip through your photos for all to see.
  • Bluetooth pairing between my iPad and my Bluetooth headset works great.

Get Your Game On . . . Cheaply

As with any tech-centered hobby, a love of gaming can get pricey — fast.

As with any tech-centered hobby, a love of gaming can get pricey — fast. On her OnSugar blog The Frugal Geek, member Toddie shares how she maintains her habit without breaking the bank.

True confessions: I am a total video game hound. I like the hidden object games, the puzzle games, the arcade games, even the Lego series. If I had not found a way to get my video games relatively cheaply, my spouse would surely have gotten me an intervention by now. But since I have found ways, my marriage survives intact.

My favorite source for video games is Goozex. This website lets you trade the video games you've grown tired of for video games that you want. You're allocated points for every game you trade in; the points vary on how popular the game is. The nice thing is you can bank up your points and save them for the future; then, when a game shows up that you really want, you spend your points on that game. There is a downside. If you're someone who wants the new Zelda as soon as it comes out, this may not be the site for you. There are waiting lists for the most popular games, so it can take awhile for your name to make it to the top of the queue. But if you don't mind a wait, Goozex is the perfect way to reduce your stash and get the new games you want for free.

Online Vacation Planning Advice From Ocpinay

Reader ocpinay shares her favorite sites for planning last-minute vacations on her OnSugar Blog, Tech Living.

Reader ocpinay shares her favorite sites for planning last-minute vacations on her OnSugar Blog, Tech Living.

I have learned to Google "Things to do in [type in city name]" to get ideas on what to do in cities I've never been to before. I get weekly Travelzoo, TripWolf and BookingBuddy newsletters that informs me about great travel deals. One of the travel sites I usually go to, especially for last minute trips is Priceline.  I scope out their lists of hotels in the area I am interested in, then find a suitable star-rating I'm comfortable with before naming my own price.

OnSugar Blog: A Few of My Favorite Things

This post comes from OnSugar blog The Frugal Geek, where reader Toddie blogs about indulging her gadget obsession without breaking the bank: So what do I currently own that I have been willing to spend my hard-earned dollars on?

This post comes from OnSugar blog The Frugal Geek, where reader Toddie blogs about indulging her gadget obsession without breaking the bank:

So what do I currently own that I have been willing to spend my hard-earned dollars on?

iPhone

Granted, this isn't exactly what one would call a "budget" item. But it has been worth every penny. When my prior phone contract ended, I was spending close to $50 a month for a phone that had no data plan, and whose only bells and whistles were a pretty nice calendar and contacts list. So yeah, I'm willing to spend $30 more a month for a phone that has become nigh indispensable to my daily life. Watch for a post soon on my favorite iPhone apps.

Flip Video Ultra

I found a refurbished Flip Ultra for $70. Consider the following. The video camera we owned prior to the Flip (and which my husband still prefers, frankly) gets dragged out on rare occasion — the recitals, school programs, etc. Once I got the Flip, however, it's so portable that I use it to tape pretty much all the time. The kids riding bikes out in the alley? Check. Opening presents Christmas morning? Check. I love that you can send video postcards through the Flip website; it added an easy and fun way to send out Christmas thank-you notes.
