Sabon Goes Organic

Updated 07/01/09 8:38 AM · Posted by BellaSugar · 4 comments

Sabon started out in 1974 with one natural soap handcrafted in a backyard in Israel, and the brand now has shops around the world. Today, it expands into the organic market with its Sabon Organic line.

Even though the "organic" labeling of beauty products (vs. food) often comes under fire for lack of consistency and regulation, this line comes ECOCERT-approved from an international organization that examines organic cosmetics. To be certified, the products must have 10 percent minimum approved organic ingredients, and at least 95 percent of ingredients must be from natural plant sources. In addition, certification requires the absence of synthetic fragrances and dyes, silicones and glycol, petro-chemical and mineral oils, and parabens, and no animal ingredients/testing.

I got a sneak peek and sniff of one of the products from this line. Read my thoughts on the item I tested when you read more

Is Your Flat Iron Too Hot to Handle?

Updated 06/19/09 10:56 AM · Posted by BellaSugar · 10 comments

As tempting as it is to just pick the highest setting on hot tools in hopes of saving time with maximum sleekness, deep down you know the damage it causes. While healthy hair can better hold up to the heat, thin or chemically treated hair should turn it down a notch. Or several notches.

Even though many flat irons have built-in temperature settings in degrees, others simply list ranges from low to high. If you're operating with a tool with no thermostat, there's a simple test to make sure your iron is hot enough . . . but not too hot to handle. Curly Bella witnessed her stylist do this simple test with thermal irons on her last visit. Find out how to do this at home and read more

More Men May Be Opening Their Eyes to Makeup

Updated 06/19/09 11:37 AM · Posted by BellaSugar · 14 comments

As the saying goes, put your best face forward — but does a best face always include makeup . . . even for men? Well, the findings of a recent survey show that more than 80 percent of Korean men think that looking "tidy" gives their performance an extra boost in the workplace.

We've heard of women encountering not-so-pretty beauty issues with employers, but there's still a difference between a fresh face, and one full of makeup. The study goes on to say that, while the majority of the men purchased lotion and toner most frequently, guys are becoming more beauty-conscious by picking up items like shine-reduction powders and blemish correctors.

It seems to be a growing trend in several countries that many males are taking a less macho approach to beauty. Have you noticed grooming changes with the men in your life?

Might as Well Face It, TV's Addicted to Beauty

Updated 06/17/09 2:05 PM · Posted by BellaSugar · 0 comments

Reality TV fans, take note: There's a new series in town tackling the tantalizing world of medspas. This secret — well, there are cameras, so it's more like "secret" — look into Changes Plastic Surgery and Spa follows the day-to-day escapades at a beauty enhancement facility in San Diego.

Titled Addicted to Beauty, the show will follow the genre's formula of a quirky cast of characters in a situation with ample dramedy. In this case, the facility of Dr. Gilbert Lee and staff gets shaken up when socialite and marketing expert Dianne York-Goldman enters with her own crew. From Ronnie (the "eccentric concierge") to Shannyn (the "whip-cracking spa manager"), I'm seeing a bumpy road already. I guess they're all there to smooth things out (groan).

The show debuts Aug. 4 on Oxygen — will you tune in?

3 Toothbrush Tricks (That Don't Involve Your Teeth)

Updated 06/17/09 2:12 PM · Posted by BellaSugar · 8 comments

I'm hoping you recognize these items — you should be using one daily to keep those pearly whites white. But, did you know those bristles can do even more beauty good? In addition to exfoliating lips for making gloss glide on smoothly, a toothbrush can come in handy. Check out three more tips that don't involve opening your mouth.

  • Hair: If you've spent time perfecting your blow out, yet still find some wispies left at your roots, add some hair gel to the brush. Make small, light strokes starting at your forehead to smooth back those bits without ruining a sleek look. Same thing goes with hair color — touch up just the roots for an easy, glove-free application!
  • Brows: Don't let unruly brows rule your life — spritz a brush lightly with hairspray and comb them back into place. Start at the center and work your way up and out in the direction of the hairs' growth for the best results.
