5 New Motherhood Myths Debunked!

We're excited to bring you a new post from mother and actress Tori Spelling and her ediTORIal by Tori Spelling blog.

We're excited to bring you a new post from mother and actress Tori Spelling and her ediTORIal by Tori Spelling blog. This week, Tori debunks five new mommy myths.

As a momista-of-four, there were still things that surprised me about each pregnancy and each new babe. There’s just so much to learn as a new mom. Even if you were one of those moms who read What to Expect When You’re Expecting cover to cover three times, chances are that you still fed into a few misconceptions and old wives' tales. So today I’m debunking a few of the biggest myths that new mamas encounter. Check them out and let me know which ones you used to believe . . .

Related: Tori's mother of the year award

Myth No. 1: You can predict the sex of the baby (without your doctor).
Each time that I was preggers, I had people tell me that if I was carrying low the baby was going to be a boy and that if I was carrying high it was a girl. Well, according to WhatToExpect.com, the height of your bump has nothing to do with the baby’s gender. Dying to find out the baby’s sex? It’s called an ultrasound! Otherwise, just sit tight and enjoy the guessing game. There are so few surprises in life.

Myth No. 2: You can determine the sex of the baby with sexual positions.
Lots of new mamas believe that not only can they predict their baby’s sex, but that they can take certain steps during conception to determine it. Well, I hate to break it to you, ladies, but according to Parents.com, the missionary position is not going to guarantee a girl and doggy style is not going to make your little one a boy. But I can promise you one thing — boy or girl, this little one is still going to be the light of your life.

Keep reading for three more myths and why they're nothing more than myths.

Creative Ways to Organize Your Craft Closet

We're excited to bring you a new post from mother and actress Tori Spelling and her ediTORIal by Tori Spelling blog. This week, Tori shares tips for organizing a craft closet.

I'm not going to lie to you; as a busy mom-of-four, spring-cleaning often takes a backseat to changing diapers, driving to afterschool sports, and cooking dinner. But this year is going to be different! I'm making it my mission this spring to tackle one room at a time and whip the house into perfectly organized shape.

My first order of business is the craft closet. Crafting can get messy, but that doesn't mean that your supplies can't be kept neat and tidy. I'm pretty good about keeping my craft supplies neat, but there's always room for improvement. So, I've been doing a little research and I found a few creative ways to keep organized. Here are a few of my favorite innovative ideas that I wanted to share with all my fellow craftistas…

Tori Spelling's Favorite Bite-Size Shower Appetizers

We're excited to bring you a new post from mother and actress Tori Spelling!

We're excited to bring you a new post from mother and actress Tori Spelling! Every other week, we bring you the best parenting and lifestyle advice from ediTORIal by Tori Spelling, Tori's daily blog about everything from food and fashion to parenting and relationships. This week, Tori shares mini appetizers for your baby shower.

When I think of April showers, rain is the last thing on my mind. We do get a little drizzle here and there in sunny Southern California, but as far as showers go, April tends to be the beginning of wedding and baby shower season. I love spring showers because the weather is just warm enough to throw a backyard brunch or afternoon shindig — full of superyummy hors d'oeuvres!

Related: Behind the Scenes of Hattie's Mad Hatter First Birthday Party

If you’ve read my book CelebraTORI, then you know that I’m all about making everything mini. Taking a classic recipe and shrinking it down into appetizer size is an uber chic way to serve food for any occasion. Appetizers are especially important for showers, as they’ll most likely be sitting out for a long period of time while people rotate between the food table, cocktails and fussing over the expecting mama- or bride-to-be. For this reason, it's important to serve food that can sit out at room temperature yet still maintain its almost-too-cute-to-eat presentation. I also suggest serving foods you know people will like. A fancy shmancy salmon steak atop a bed of spinach may be classy, but who doesn’t love a couple of good, old-fashioned cocktail weenies (which also happen to be much kinder on your wallet)?

Now, in case you’re still stuck on what to make, I thought I'd give you a little #foodspiration and share some of my personal favorites. Here are nine Spring shower appetizers I always keep in my back pocket . . .

This week, Tori shares her final minutes before giving birth to baby Finn.

From the moment we got to the hospital in preparation of Finn’s big arrival, I was a nervous wreck. We had a scheduled C-section, and even though I'd been through this three times before, I was a mess. Superanxious, totally scared, dreading surgery, and thinking the worst.

Luckily, I had Dean and Mehran (my two husbands) with me, along with my amazing friend and doctor (Dr. J) and my wonderful nurse Mykel (who was also my nurse when I was a resident in the hospital for those long months during the pregnancy) who did a great job of calming this pregger down and assuring me that everything would be OK.

After an hour or so, it was finally time to head into the operating room and welcome Finn into this world. I'm so happy Mehran was there to catch this video message to Liam, Stella, and Hattie as Dean and I headed into surgery where we would finally meet our little man . . .

Have you heard the song "Call Me Maybe" by Carly Rae Jepsen? The popular song inspired Rebekah of A Blissful Nest to create a fun Valentine's Day Party Collection and dessert table to match. I instantly fell in love with the teal/pink stripes and retro gold phone and knew I had to work this theme into our Valentines this year! Feeling inspired by the collection, I decided to make Valentines using chocolate "telephone numbers" as an edible, fun version of "here's my number" . . .

How Did You Feel When Your Last Pregnancy Was Over?

We're excited to bring you a new post from mother and actress Tori Spelling!

We're excited to bring you a new post from mother and actress Tori Spelling! Every other week, we bring you the best parenting and lifestyle advice from ediTORIal by Tori Spelling, Tori's daily blog about everything from food and fashion to parenting and relationships. This week, Tori shares her final moments before giving birth to her fourth child.

Now that we were officially on our "Baby-Cation", we were getting closer and closer to welcoming Finn into our family. The morning of Finn's arrival (we had a scheduled C-section, so we knew exactly when we'd meet our littlest one) I had a million thoughts and feelings running through my head. While I was super excited to welcome our newest babe into the family, I was totally caught off-guard by how sad I was that this would be my last morning ever as a pregnant woman.

Related: Tori's Little Sports Guy

With Liam & Stella, I knew after each pregnancy that Dean and I wanted to have more kids. Although I was sad when those pregnancies ended (It may be weird, but I love being pregnant), I knew that we'd eventually have more kids. When we had Hattie, we thought that we probably wanted one more babe, if we were lucky enough to be blessed with one, so I held out hope that I would get to wear my bump proud one more time.

But with Finn, both Dean and I knew that this was probably it for us in the baby-making department. Since Finn's pregnancy was so difficult and dangerous, we knew that if we could make it through this one and make it to the finish line with a happy and healthy baby, that our family would be complete. So there was a sense of sadness when I woke up on the morning of Finn's big arrival, because I knew that this was the last time that I would ever have one of my sweet babes in my belly.

Now don't get me wrong… I was so excited to meet baby, and was so proud that we had made it to the finish line together … I just wanted to keep him in my belly a little longer!

How did you feel when your last pregnancy was over? Were you sad that this was the last time you'd be a pregger? Or did you feel relieved?

Every other week, we bring you the best parenting and lifestyle advice from ediTORIal by Tori Spelling, Tori's daily blog about everything from food and fashion to parenting and relationships. This week, Tori shares a fun Winter craft activity.

During the kids' Winter break from school, we had a lot of time at home together, which meant one thing — lots and lots of crafting! Luckily, DIY-ing is in my DNA because Liam and Stella (and sometimes even Hattie) love nothing more than to spend an afternoon crafting. Whether they're making Christmas ornaments, shrinky dinks, decor for Finn's nursery, or tie-dye tanks, my babes craft their little hearts out every chance they get.

So when they were home from school and had tons of time on their hands, the first thing we did (after recovering from the flu/food coma) was break out the crafting supplies. We thought long and hard about what to make and came up with two ideas that would be perfect for the holidays, but ones that we could also display around the house throughout winter.

Tori Spelling Shares the Details on Finn's Giraffe-Filled Nursery

Every other week, we bring you the best parenting and lifestyle advice from ediTORIal by Tori Spelling, Tori's daily blog about everything from food and fashion to parenting and relationships. This week, Tori shares the details of baby Finn's nursery.

I am so excited to share these photos of Finn's nursery with all of you! With each of my babies, designing their nurseries has been a really special and important time for me, and with Finn, it was actually incredibly therapeutic. Because I spent months in the hospital while I was pregnant with Finn, coming up with design concepts for Finn's nursery gave me hope, and I've been waiting to share my process with all of you for a long time.

When I found out I would be spending a good portion of my pregnancy with Finn confined to a hospital bed, I knew that I needed some major help to decorate Finn's nursery. Also, because of the condition I had, placenta previa, I needed to decorate the nursery fast, because there was always a possibility that I would deliver extremely early. With all of this in mind, I knew exactly who to call on to help me — two of my besties Bill Horn & Scout Masterson, aka the Guncles. Not only do they have impeccable taste, but they also run a supersuccessful baby-and-kids product PR firm called Marque Communications and know about all of the latest and greatest in nursery decor.

Tori Spelling's Kids-Free Evening Turns Into a Night of Debauchery!

This week, Tori shares the hilarious tale of her child-free night on the town.

Hello, my name is Tori, and I'm a Kid-a-holic. It's true. I have real issues leaving my kids. Because of my issues, Dean and I rarely go to parties, dinners, a date, or anything adult-driven. Seems that if there's not a kid's menu, I'm not interested.

But, it didn't start out that way. Before we had kids, we lit up the town. Social card filled nightly. I swore up and down that kids wouldn't change us. That we would be awesome parents but still take time for ourselves to have adult fun time. And then came Liam. And, then Stella. Hattie and then Finn. We haven't been out without our kids past 7 p.m. in probably two years! No joke.

Related: Mad Hattie's Tea Party — The Decor!

So, when my good friend Jess's wedding invite arrived in the mail, I started to sweat. I love Jess, but not only was it an adults-only wedding, but (gulp) it was also out of town. The wedding was just in Santa Barbara, which is an hour from us, but how would this affect the kids, aka me! I immediately started looking into multiple rooms at the hotel. In my head I quickly got a game plan in place . . . a sitter could hang with the kids in the hotel room while we attended the wedding, right? It could work! That's when Dean took my hands, wiped my sweat-speckled brow, and suggested we have a much-needed adult-only night away. What?? No chicken fingers? No SpongeBob? No "Wipe me I poo'd"? Hmmm . . . That sounded terrifying!! The quiet alone would probably send me off the deep end.

Four constant offspring voices is like white noise to me. It's my comfy zone. But, after two years of back-to-back pregnancies and four beautiful but loud babes later, my husband and I probably could use a night to ourselves. I agreed, and we booked one room with a king-size bed. We would celebrate my friend and have a romantic night all in one. The day of the wedding, I nervously packed my weekender bag. It seemed empty void of pacifiers, Blankees, sippy cups, and diaper cream. So I distracted myself by planning a night of sheer vintage glamour. I picked an exceptional ensemble and packed it all up. Then I kissed all four kids and kissed all four kids and kissed all four kids. Liam, now the man of the house for "one night only," nervously laughed and finally said, "OK Mommmm," so I stopped the oversharing of affection and blew them a final kiss before leaving. I knew they'd be well taken care of but still had to throw in, "Call me if anything, I mean anything, at all goes wrong. I can be back in less than an hour!!!!" I clasped my hand over my mouth to hinder any further irrational babble. Even I realized I sounded desperate.

Life Lessons: Tori Spelling Shares Her Friend's Reflections on Raising a Child With Down Syndrome

We're excited to bring you a new post from mother and actress Tori Spelling!

We're excited to bring you a new post from mother and actress Tori Spelling! Every other week, we bring you the best parenting and lifestyle advice from ediTORIal by Tori Spelling, which is Tori's daily blog about everything from food and fashion to parenting and relationships. This week, Tori shares her friend's experience raising a child with Down Syndrome.

Today I am grateful and honored to bring you a second guest blog from my friend Lisa. As you may remember, her son Blake was born with Down Syndrome, so in honor of National Down Syndrome Awareness Month, Lisa has so generously shared the next part of her journey with us. The lessons that she has learned over the past year are not limited to those who might have children with special needs. Everything that Lisa has experienced is something that all of us can relate to, and the deeper understanding of motherhood that she can lay claim to I truly admire. Take it away, Lisa . . .

Related: Hattie Cat's Birthday Cake Bake-Off

Sometimes in life you have to experience things as opposed to relying on words, opinions, or "facts" to get the picture. Growing up, I was always one who had to "learn the hard way" and suffer the consequences of my actions to get the lessons, and I am grateful that this is still the case. A little boy named Blake rocked my world May 13, 2011, when he was born with Down Syndrome (Read our full story here). The last 17 months have literally transformed me as a person and a mother. Not only was I blessed with a baby boy who has a "little something extra" in the chromosome department; I have also become part of an amazing community whose foundation is built on the principals of Support, Inclusion, Respect, and Love. I feel the true key to change is education and information, and in honor of Down Syndrome Awareness Month, I would like to share five things I have learned in the last year about being a mother of a child with Down Syndrome.

  • It's All Relative: I naturally found myself playing the comparison game between my son and daughter. I think I naturally felt the urge to compare as I saw/felt no difference between my two children, as I remember Kaleigh doing all the things I witness Blake do. An example of a comparison was teething patterns/time; my daughter got her first teeth at 4 months and Blake at 10 months. At first I could not help making comparisons and have recently realized that it is all relative and incomparable. Each child will reach milestones on their own timeline and do their own thing.
  • Great Expectations: If you want to set yourself up to fail, getting caught up in your own expectations is a good way to go. I have had to curb my natural expectations in all situations when it comes to my son's development (and my daughter's, too). I would find myself frustrated or disappointed when he/she did not meet the expectations I had. I guess it was just my natural instinct as a mother (and a human being) to have such expectations for my children. I have learned to take a step back and realize that my expectations are irrelevant to my children's lives, and I need to enjoy them each day, expectations aside.

As you know by now, I have a special love affair with vintage . . . vintage clothing, vintage furniture, vintage jewelry, the list goes on and on. My good friend Vintage and I recently go a lot closer while I was pregnant with Baby Finn. As my belly bump (and Finn) kept growing, it became harder and harder to fit into my prepreggers clothing — with my vintage dresses being the only exception! No matter how many months along I was, or how big my bump got, my vintage frocks never failed me. I even wore one of my fave vintage sundresses to the hospital the day that Finn was born!

Dean McDermott Shares Tips For Making Each Child Feel Special

We're excited to bring you a new post from mother and actress Tori Spelling!

We're excited to bring you a new post from mother and actress Tori Spelling! Every other week, we're bringing you the best parenting and lifestyle advice from ediTORIal by Tori Spelling, which is Tori's daily blog about everything from food and fashion to parenting and relationships. Tori is currently resting following complications after the delivery of her fourth child last month, so her blog is sharing her husband Dean's thoughts on spending quality time with your kids. We wish Tori a speedy recovery!

While Tori is still resting and recuperating, we thought we'd share some thoughts from Dean on how to make each of your kids feel special. Dean recently posted a blog on his website on the topic, and we think it's such great advice on how he spends quality time with each of his kids that we wanted to make sure all of you saw it! Here are some of Dean's pointers for making time for each of your kids:

Related: The McDermotts' Matching Pedicures

My five kids are each so different, not just in terms of age and interests, but personality too. They're each special in their own way, and I'm equally proud of all of them. While I love nothing more than spending an entire day with the whole family, I'm conscious of making sure each of my kids feels special. Whether you have one kid or a whole brood, like Tori and me, here are some ideas for getting quality time with your kids and making them feel special:

  1. Set a weekly "dad" date. Go for a bike ride, walk the dog (or goat!), have lunch at your kid's favorite restaurant, or get a pedicure together — whatever your kid likes to do.
  2. Choose group activities that everyone can participate in — whether you're crafting, cooking, or playing at the park, make sure there's something fun to do for each member of your family.
  3. If you have babies in the house, let your older kids share in the baby-raising experience. Not only will they be taking some of the work off your hands, they'll learn to be responsible and will take pride in caring for their younger siblings. There's nothing sweeter than hearing one of your older kids reminisce about caring for a younger sibling when he/she was a baby.
  4. Make it a ritual to have group story time before bed. Let your kids pick the story. Agreeing on a story everyone can enjoy is a great exercise in compromising and sharing.
  5. As much as possible, cook kid-friendly meals together, like my gourmet mac 'n' cheese. Make sure to keep knives and other dangerous kitchen implements away from your younger kids. Instead, let them stir, or measure ingredients. Your older kids can help with the prep work — just make sure you teach them basic kitchen safety and proper knife-handling technique first. Again, make the menu-planning a collaborative process. Your kids will get excited about making something they chose, and they'll be learning an important life skill!

How do you spend quality time with your kids?

— Dean

One of my favorites, of course, is a stylish diaper bag. Any practiced mom knows that baby bags take a lot of wear and tear, so a new one is always a welcome investment. With that in mind, I wanted to share a few of my favorites on the market right now. So, without further ado:

Tori Spelling's Ode to the End of Pregnancy

We're excited to bring you a new post from mother and actress Tori Spelling!

We're excited to bring you a new post from mother and actress Tori Spelling! Every other week, we're bringing you the best parenting and lifestyle advice from ediTORIal by Tori Spelling, which is Tori's daily blog about everything from food and fashion to parenting and relationships. This week, Tori takes a look back at her four pregnancies.

As my fourth pregnancy is nearing the end I have bittersweet feelings. I can't wait to meet and hold my little man or lady, and definitely I won't miss having to pee four times a night or hearing my now pliable pelvic bones move and crunch when I try to pull myself out of bed in the morning. But, there's so much I will miss.

I'm guessing this will be my final pregnancy and that brings tears to my eyes. I love being pregnant. It's such a special time in a woman's life. I love looking at my enormous baby belly and knowing that I am doing the most important job of my life . . . making life. I'm a human incubator and it is such an honor. I also love feeling my baby kick and play and move inside of me. After doing this three times before it still amazes me. I pull up my top every time I feel movement and gaze in awe as my belly ripples back and forth, and I can see what appears to be small rolling mountains of little hands and feet travel across my stomach. I love never feeling alone and I love how everyone smiles at a pregnant woman no matter what mood they are in. I love how everyone calls me 'Mama' and how my husband rubs my belly and tells me I'm the sexiest woman he's ever seen. I also have so much fun dressing my baby bump. I usually opt for vintage and make it a mission to show myself and other preggers that you can totally look stylish at any point during pregnancy.

Like I said, I'm in love with pregnancy. Funny enough, if you had asked 21-year-old Tori if she would one day be the mama of four, she probably would have laughed at you on her way out the door to go have whisky sours and dance at The Roxbury on Sunset with Shannen Doherty and Brian Austin Green. I mean . . . I always knew I wanted kids but I never could have predicted that I'd want such a large family and how much I would love being pregnant, and then taking care of and raising babes.

I live for my children. I beyond enjoy every single moment with them. I love the big moments like watching them talk and walk for the first time and even the small things like watching them discover their toes or hearing Liam say, "Mom, Mom, Mom" 50 times in a row. I even love when Stella says, "Mom I pooped," and I walk into the bathroom to find her off the toilet, grasping her ankles with her naked butt in the air, awaiting a wipe.

I know all of these moments are fleeting. They won't last forever. Just like my pregnancy. So I'm enjoying my last moments as a pregnant woman. I know very shortly it will be over and just a memory. I hope I can hang onto that amazing feeling I feel as an honored pregger and can remember forever the enjoyment I got out of it. Actually I know I'll remember the enjoyment I got out of it as I watch my four beautiful babies grow into adults and have babies of their own. Yes, these moments can't last forever, but the greatest part is that new moments with them will be created for the rest of our lives together. And where pregnancy is concerned, hopefully I will forget the dry nipples, constant heartburn, and constipation!

And since this will most likely be my last pregnancy, I wanted to dedicate the entire week on ediTORIal to blogs about pregnancy and being a mama. And to make sure that I never forget how I felt during this fourth pregnancy, my family and I are going to be filming some very special home videos for all of you guys documenting the final weeks before babe arrives! I'll be posting these videos to ediTORIal, so stay tuned!
