Your Personalized Guide to Contouring For Your Face Shape

Contouring. Just the word strikes fear into many hearts, but this technique shouldn't be left only to the pros.

Contouring. Just the word strikes fear into many hearts, but this technique shouldn't be left only to the pros. A simple swipe of bronzer and highlighter in the right places can bring light to your best features (and detract from others). All face shapes are beautiful and unique in their own right, but artists try to give the illusion of a more oval face by creating shadows on the face. "The key to a perfect contour is proper blending and remembering that light accentuates the face, while shadowing recedes it," Floriane David of Make Up For Ever Academy says.

In order to contour at home, choose an eye shadow, foundation, or bronzer that is about one shade darker than your complexion, and grab an angled brush. Get your personalized guide to contouring based on your face shape when you read more.

How to Keep Polish Remover From Drying Out Your Nails

Well-polished fingers can enhance your hands, but the removal process (whether it's with an acetone or acetone-free formula) can quickly dry out your nails and cuticles.

Well-polished fingers can enhance your hands, but the removal process (whether it's with an acetone or acetone-free formula) can quickly dry out your nails and cuticles. The easiest way to lessen the damage is to coat your fingertips with cuticle oil before you even open a bottle of polish remover. Yes, before.

Apply Essie Apricot Cuticle Oil ($8) all over your cuticles to seal in moisture with cotton seed and soybean oils, and then take your polish off. Once you've cleaned up your nails with polish remover, add another dose of cuticle oil to your nails and skin. If you're planning on doing a fresh coat of polish, then just use nail polish remover or alcohol to swipe the nail clean before applying your base coat. And once your polish is in place, give your nails one more shot of cuticle oil for the ultimate in dry-nail prevention.

One Trick to Finding the Perfect Nude Nail Polish For Your Wedding Day

Nude nails are a great alternative to the classic French manicure for brides, because they're versatile while still being modern.

Nude nails are a great alternative to the classic French manicure for brides, because they're versatile while still being modern. But finding the perfect hue to match your skin tone can prove tricky. There are a variety of flesh-toned polishes that my look chic in the bottle, but which one is right for you? Nail artist Deborah Lippmann has an easy tip for picking your perfect polish. "Our bodies tell us a lot about what colors are right and wrong to wear," Lippmann says. "If you put a color on, particularly a nude, and it doesn't fit you, your cuticle will look funky." In essence, the color of your polish will play against the cuticle in a way that will make it look dark or slightly red and ruddy. And while this trick works best for nudes, you can use it with other colors, too.

But what if you fall in love with a shade that doesn't work the first time around? You can still sometimes fudge it. "There's this one shade that I love that doesn't look right on me," Lippmann says. "But if I put a thin layer down, let it dry completely, and then add another thin layer, it looks good." Finding the right system to cheat your polish might take some trial and error, but with a little patience, your perfect nude shade will present itself to you. You just checked one more thing off your wedding checklist.
