The "Botticelli" Haircut Trend Has Summer Written All Over It

There are two types of people in the summer: those who cut off all their hair into a super-short style, like a bob haircut, and those who keep it long and embrace their inner mermaid the entire season. If you fall into the latter category, you're going to love the "Botticelli" hair trend.

If the name sounds familiar, it's because the haircut trend is inspired by Italian Renaissance painter Sandro Botticelli. Random? A little bit, but hear us out. "Hair in this style is worn extremely long and unstructured, with a natural, fluffy wave," Tom Smith, celebrity hairstylist and international color creative director for Evo Hair, tells POPSUGAR. Just picture the people in Renaissance paintings with their long, tousled, flowing hair.

Here, we're breaking down everything you need to know about the "Botticelli" hair trend.

What Is "Botticelli" Hair?

Smith describes "Botticelli" hair as being "extremely youthful," with a "Mother Earth," flower-child vibe. "This style shows a free and relaxed energy," he says. The extra-long length also gives the look a luxurious, ethereal feel, but in an effortless way. The "Botticelli" haircut trend is a drastic departure from the choppy shag haircuts that have been the go-to all winter long — we're talking the ever-popular bixie, octopus, and wolf cuts — but as the weather warms up, it may be just the thing you need to refresh your look.

Similarly, Philipp Haug, salon owner of Haug London Haus and Schwarzkopf Professional partner, says the look is defined by a glamorous cascading curl and soft texture to frame the face.

How to Get "Botticelli" Hair

Before heading to the salon for a light trim, look for reference photos of the look. Celebrities wearing the carefree, beachy style include Gigi Hadid, Megan Fox, Rihanna, and Megan Thee Stallion, just to name a few.

"Ask your stylist to keep your hair as long as possible, softening any blunt lines and encouraging your natural wave," says Smith. If you need a little help in the length department, it may be a fun time to experiment with hair extensions.

How to Style the "Botticelli" Haircut Trend

"If you don't have natural waves, use a small curling tong and twist large sections around, stretching them out while still hot to get the fluffy, elongated waves," Smith says. For a heat-free option, try scrunching a cream styler into your hair while it's damp, braiding it into two loose pigtails, and sleeping in them. Finish the style off with a texturizing powder, "scrunched through the underneath layers, which will increase volume and that aerated, fluffy finish," Smith says.

Best Products for Creating "Botticelli" Hair

Haug recommends styling with a "large tong, wrapping hair from the mid-lengths down and allowing to cool before gently combing through." Our favorite is the T3 SinglePass Curl 1.5" Ceramic Long Barrel ($170). Then, he says to finish with a soft-touch hairspray like the Schwarzkopf Professional Session Label The Flexible ($13) all over the hair for a long-lasting hold without the stiffness.
