We're big fans of Lauren Conrad. In the age of rainbow highlighter and burrito contouring, it's almost refreshing to see a gal stick to a signature look — when you know what works for you, why change it? But that doesn't mean a woman's go-to style can't evolve a bit, especially when she's switching it up for an evening event.

For the 2016 CFDA Awards, Lauren did just that. Instead of her classic cat eye (which she always uses liquid liner for), the fashion designer wore a more subtle, smoky take on her feline flick. It appears that makeup artist Tina Turnbow used a combination of powder shadow and a smudgy pencil to create a tiny, blended wing.

There's no doubt in our mind that Lauren opted for a more understated version of her signature look because she wanted that vampy lip to truly pop! Turnbow divulged on Instagram that she crafted the moody mouth using Bite Beauty Matte Creme Lip Crayon in Truffle ($24).

However, we were unsurprised to learn that Lauren paired her Kohl's gown with a tousled, braided chignon. After all, the star absolutely loves plaits and beachy texture! Hair master Sarah Potempa prepped Lauren's strands using her legendary Beachwaver ($199), added a messy braid, and swept her mane up into a piecey bun.

The finished beauty look was stunning, a bit edgy, and would be a very sophisticated choice for your next girls' night out. See for yourself when you read on.
