When Make Up For Ever announced the release of HD Skin Foundation, our editors were eager to test out the new formula. If a foundation claims up to 24-hour coverage, you can consider our interest piqued. The launch is a revamp of the customer-favorite Ultra HD foundation — it has everything fans enjoyed about the original formula, but with some big improvements that make it better than ever. We are happy to see that there are 40 shades, because having a range that works for everyone is at the top of the list as far as important factors go. If you're not sure which tone is right for you, the site offers a Shade Finder tool so you can get your perfect match.

What our beauty pros appreciate is that the coverage is buildable, so whether you like a lightweight natural look or a full and fabulous face of makeup, you have either option in one bottle. This foundation is meant to blur and cover imperfections for for a full day, "powered by a micro-skin system that syncs with the skin for true-to-skin finish," the brand states. It's also waterproof and sweat-proof, which is especially important as we head into spring and summer.

After hearing so many good things, we enlisted four editors to test out this new foundation, take a selfie, and give us their honest reviews. Keep reading to see how the formula looks on each editor, then consider testing it out for yourself. Spring cleaning our vanity means it's time for some new makeup anyway.

A Silky Texture That's Buildable and Blendable

A Silky Texture That's Buildable and Blendable

Anvita is wearing Make Up For Ever HD Skin Foundation in 3N54 ($43).

"My shade for the Make Up For Ever HD Skin Foundation is 3N54, and I used around two pumps of it with a foundation brush for a more full coverage look. I only needed a concealer to brighten my under-eye area and add extra coverage for my dark spots. The texture is silky, moisturizing, and easily glides onto my skin. The foundation is buildable with medium to full coverage. It has a skin-like soft matte finish and blends on the skin beautifully. I only had to set my T-zone, which gets more oily throughout the day, and my laugh line area, which creases easily. The foundation is flexible and moves with my skin. The foundation looked seamless and stayed put for around eight hours. I had minor creasing on my laugh line area, but it disappears if I gently pat and blend it with my fingers. My complexion looked even-toned, flawless, and photo-ready all day and night long!" — Anvita Reddy, editorial assistant, Commerce

A Natural Lightweight Finish That Lasts

"I'm minimal with my makeup use, so I typically gravitate towards products that don't require too many pumps to achieve a natural, no-makeup glow. This foundation delivered on this, with its smooth texture and hydrating feel. After massaging it onto my face with the supple sponge, the finish also felt breathable. I went out for dinner, and did not need to re-apply as it provides pretty good coverage for hours on end." — Shelcy Joseph, associate editor, Fashion

Covers Hormonal Breakouts Without Feeling Heavy

Covers Hormonal Breakouts Without Feeling Heavy

Krista is wearing Make Up For Ever HD Skin Foundation in 1N10 ($43).

"When it comes to foundation, I always go for less is more. That said though, I do sometimes have to combat from hormonal breakouts, and might need a little more coverage than usual. For me, a foundation that offers buildable coverage is a must, and this one delivers on that. For my day-to-day, I am able to apply just a light layer with my fingers over my sunscreen, and it gives me more of a tinted moisturizer light look, while still covering some scars and other marks. For the days I have breakouts, I can apply this with a brush to get even more coverage. All in all, this smooth and glow-like finish makes me feel fresh, and it's like having two different foundations in one." — Krista Jones, editor, Commerce

Full Coverage That Never Looks Heavy

Macy is wearing Make Up For Ever HD Skin Foundation in 1N00 ($43).

"I like to use a full coverage foundation, but I hate when you can see the makeup on your face. This formula melts into my skin, covering all my blemishes without looking cakey or heavy. I used the HD Skin Foundation Brush to apply the foundation and it easily blended, giving me a smooth and flawless finish. This is now my daily favorite and I've been using it all the time." — Macy Cate Williams, senior editor, Commerce
