Friends and family discounts usually happen before the holidays, but Ulta is changing things up by shaving 20 percent off until Jan. 19. The offer isn't good on Chanel, Estee Lauder, Lancome fragrance, or clearance — but there's still plenty to choose from, such as this Confessions of a Shopaholic Makeup Palette (regularly $29.50) from Too Faced. To get the discount, print out the in-store coupon or enter 82548 at checkout.
About a month ago, I asked you who you thought would be the face of the newly announced Dolce & Gabbana makeup line. Most of you guessed Gossip Girl's Leighton Meester, but those of you who had a hunch it was Scarlett Johansson were right. Of their newly tapped spokesperson, Gabbana told WWD, "Scarlett is sure of herself." He added, "She’s a beautiful girl, but she’s really easygoing. She is very Dolce & Gabbana."

Awards season is in full swing, and along with the red-carpet galas, there's one less-publicized awards ceremony: the Skinnies. Every year, San Francisco dermatologist Dr. Vail Reese looks at the world's most famous faces, keeping an eye on their skin's changes. In years past, he's highlighted Angelina's acne and Miley Cyrus's scars, but this year brings a new crop of winners.
I won't ruin the surprises for you, but I will say that we finally find out what was likely up with Amy Winehouse's skin last year. Dr. Reese doesn't treat these celebrities, but he provides an entertaining way to learn about various skin quirks and disorders. Check out the winners and let me know if you think anyone was left out.

If you're the type of person who loves beauty and getting surprises in the mail, this may be just the program for you. Similar to Beautyfix, NewBeauty's TestTube plan ships out packages stuffed with deluxe and full-sized samples of products.
For less than $40 per cylinder (including shipping), a new tube arrives on your doorstep every three months. The surprise factor adds an exciting twist to the concept – with no guarantees of actual products or total value – but they're not talking bargain travel sizes from your local drugstore. Recently appearing brands include Dr. Brandt, N.V. Perricone, M.D., Phytomer, and Estee Lauder; the site promises each "always significantly exceeds the subscription price." Color me a scientist and call me happy!
A few weeks ago my friend decided to make hot buttered rum on a whim. None of us had ever had it, and it sounded kind of gross... yet somehow appealing. (YumSugar has a recipe.) Is it good? It was a mixed bag on that one, but the batter itself served as my inspiration for this brown sugar scrub. Oh, and I just found out that National Hot Buttered Rum Day is this Saturday. Who knew? Yum even has a fun quiz all about this old school drink. Check out some pics below, along with my recipe, too.
Bella's Booze-Free Hot Buttered Rum Brown Sugar Body Scrub:
- Mix together 1/2 cup brown sugar; 1/4 cup almond oil (olive oil would work, too); a dash of ground cinnamon or cinnamon essential oil; and a dash of ground nutmeg or nutmeg essential oil. Apply. Optional: Add a dash of rum extract — Oh, I suppose you could get the real stuff out and mix up a little rum cocktail for yourself, too. Whee!
