Welcome to part four of my Bella miniseries on the mini-facial, where I'll detail specific fast skin-recovery routines for those mornings where a face wash isn't enough. Sometimes your skin needs a little extra boost before you face the day, and we all know trying to mask a skin problem with makeup alone can only make it worse. So, check out our tips for righting what went wrong overnight.
Scenario 4: Your best friend's boyfriend broke up with her, so you spent the evening listening to how much she's going to miss her "boo bear" while she chain smoked. Now it's the morning, she's on your couch with an empty bottle of vino and your face feels like it was rubbed in an ashtray.
Here's what to do:
- Wash your face with an oxygenating cleanser, like Clean & Clear Oxygenating Fizzing Cleanser ($6.99).
-
Apply a mask for dull skin, like Bliss Triple Oxygen Instant Energizing Mask ($52).
-
Try a serum with vitamin C to brighten skin, like Philosophy When Hope Is Not Enough: Age Control ($38), Fresh Appleseed Brightening Essence ($90), or Avalon Organics Vitamin C Vitality Facial Serum ($16.79).
-
Smooth on a light-reflecting tinted moisturizer, like Aveeno Active Naturals Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer SPF 30 ($14.39).

Hey Jimmy Paul, Serena van der Woodsen called. She wants her hair back! At Nanette Lepore, Bumble & Bumble hairstylist Jimmy Paul created a look that was very similar to the one Serena wore to Blair's party on Monday night's episode (if you got a perfect score on the quiz, you know this). So get excited: not only do you get to find out from a master how to have Serena hair, you can now tell people you're inspired by Nanette Lepore's Spring 2009 runway — not, um, a teen soap opera.
For this look, which Paul described as "boho, hippie inspired," Paul began with natural waves enhanced by Bumble & Bumble Surf Spray. "If a girl's hair is fine, we're using a curling iron. If she has very fine hair, we'll put in more Surf Spray at the roots to enhance the wave before curling it. If they come with waves that need a little help, we're doing just the Surf Spray. If a girl has dry hair, we're using Styling Balm on the ends. It's meant to look very natural." And the braids? "To open up the face, we're putting one on either side with a middle part and a few random ones. Some models have buns to show the details on the back of the clothes. It's a little haphazard, a little off-center, braided, and looped around with a few bobby pins. It's supposed to look very beachy, like a girl did it herself." So what is the best way to do it yourself? "It's easier to coax the wave out of wet hair, so spray in some Surf Spray, more towards the middle and the ends. It's supposed to be fuller on the ends and flatter on top. With a curling iron, concentrate more on the ends, you don't have to go all the way to the root." Throw in some braids and you're golden.

While I was
getting my lashes on at Shu Uemura, another Sugar girl was experiencing a new look of her own. Makeup artist Nicky Posley worked his magic, and presented us with the 2008 Fall Mode Collection called
Instinct. "This collection is all about femininity, sensuality, and deep rich color," he said. Read on to see how to get the look.

In this week's episode of America's Next Top Model, we heard some startling accusations: breast implants, racism, anorexia — just to name a few. All in all, the model hopefuls struggled with being too plain or too over-the-top, and Tyra and co. weren't shy about telling any of them so. But that's just the meat and potatoes, I'm more concerned with all of the hair and makeup misses and mishaps. How close were you paying attention?

Happy models from all kinds of backgrounds? Anna Sui, I think I love you. This show was a great reminder that fashion should be fun, and it's so refreshing to see models grinning on the runway. What's more, the backstage area was so well-run that models' makeup was done more than an hour before showtime — unheard of!
This fresh makeup look came courtesy of makeup artist Pat McGrath, who previewed lots of products. "It's very sunny, very fresh," she said of the look. "The models look like they've been outside in the sun." To get the lips, she put Anna Sui #400 lipstick, a sheer red, over a forthcoming lip stain marker. (You're going to love these when they come out in January, promise.) Another product preview from the runway: Max Factor 2000 Calorie Extreme mascara. The wand is nearly identical to my beloved Cover Girl Lash Blast, but Pat promises even thicker lashes when it hits stores this winter. Can't wait — and can't get enough of these gorgeously smiley models, either.

As you may know, I'm constantly doing research to bring you the latest beauty, hair, and makeup news. I type in "hair" on Google, and what do I get? Posh's new hair, hair-loss treatments, and Hair (the movie). You get the point. I type in "lipstick" and I get the fairly standard Lipstick Jungle, Clinique makeup, and the delightfully odd phrase: lipstick on a pig!?
That particular phrase has popped up practically every time I've done a "lipstick" search, long before the latest political debacle surfaced. Just what does this bizarre statement mean? When it comes to politics, I'll save those details for CitizenSugar, but for the sake of those that want to know — "lipstick on a pig" has nothing to do with cosmetics or stout-nosed, squiggly-tailed animals, for that matter. The phrase describes trying to superficially dress up an unattractive situation — so if you put lipstick on a pig, it's still a pig. I tend to think piggies are cute, but now you know. Now back to all things beauty.
