Marc Jacobs: Spring 2012

Et, voila! New York Fashion Week ended on a high note last night with the Marc Jacobs Spring 2012 show. It began with some theatrics; models were staged in a tableau at one end of the runway, leaving one by one to stride by the audience. The collection was a fascinating mix of '20s glamour (sparkly drop-waist dresses!), '30s Depression-era thrift (make a skirt out of cellophane!), and even some '90s sportswear. It was a fantastic and original show that only adds fuel to the fire in regards to Jacobs possibly being named creative director at Christian Dior. To see the show in action, watch the runway video.

  • Trends: '20s glam, metallics, '30s, '90s, sporty, ladylike.
  • Colors: metallics, seafoam green, blue, gray.
  • Key Piece: The sweatshirts and metallic coats might be the most wearable, but the plastic/cellophane skirts and dresses are what you'll see in magazines.
  • Accessories: metallic cowboy booties and menswear loafers were highlights.
  • Who Would Wear It: Eclectic style mavens who want to stand out from the crowd: Daphne Guinness, Helena Bonham Carter.

Calvin Klein: Spring 2012

Francisco Costa took the brand's signature minimalism to a sexy place for Spring 2012. We'll be back shortly with our full review, but for now, check out the full collection in our slideshow. To see the clothes in live motion, watch our runway video!

Ralph Lauren Spring 2012

>> This season, Ralph Lauren returned to classic Americana, trotting out a solid collection of '20s-tinged separates and eveningwear.

>> This season, Ralph Lauren returned to classic Americana, trotting out a solid collection of '20s-tinged separates and eveningwear. In short, it was what a modern-day Daisy Buchanon would wear to a garden party. She'd have plenty of options to choose from — flowy crepe de chine trousers in peach and baby blue, chiffon skirts in sherbet-florals, and cashmere sweaters in daffodil and apple green.

For evening, there were high-shine gowns in panne velvet, slip-dresses with deco beading, and ostrich feather shrugs. Also, three-piece suits in ivory silk, complete with pink-satin ties. If all this sounds familiar, it should. After all, it was Ralph Lauren who designed the costumes for the 1974 film The Great Gatsby, and many of those knockout silhouettes were reprised here.
