Could it be the end of shorter hemlines? Maybe not, but a lot of designers are experimenting with longer shorts for Spring 2012. So far, the burgeoning trend has showed up on the NYFW runways in the way of loose silk renditions and crisp cottons. We love the way Tibi showed its tailored version with a matching blazer — perfect for Summer office ensembles — and Adam and Karen Walker's whimsical printed additions. The best part? Proenza Schouler's Spring 2012 collection cited Googie architecture as an influence and all the things that came with it: midcentury modern design and a little bit of kitsch. Specifically, the Proenza boys mentioned the Fontainebleu Hotel in Miami, which might explain the shag rug runway, zebra prints, and raffia. Ladylike silhouettes — fitted high-waist pencil skirts and structured jackets — kept the collection feeling polished and refined. There was plenty of color, print, and texture, like bold yellow, turquoise blue, tropical prints, raffia, to make the collection full of wearable, covetable pieces for Spring.

Phillip Lim's Spring 2012 collection was built around the ideas of geometry, activewear, and kites. Yes, those wispy things we send up to the sky inspired Lim's soft, flowing clothes, many of which ruffled and moved with the slightest breeze. There was lots of silk, from side-slit trousers to delicate dresses with geometric ruffles. There were sporty pieces as well, including tops that looked like they had been cut from a thin rubber (more chic than it sounds), micro twill utility vests, and a bonded leather round collar jacket. The trousers will be a must have next season, done in soft colors like limoncello and lavender for ultimate breezy style. So, too, will be the metallic silver sandals that look so insanely good with Lim's pastel-hued offerings.
Three years. That's how long it took manicurist Deborah Lippmann to test, tweak, and perfect the rose-gold nail polish she used for Badgley Mischka's Spring 2012 runway show. Inspired by a fancy-schmancy Rolex, the warm metallic shade, Glamorous Life, added a satin finish to fingertips. A color this gorgeous, versatile, and chic is as suitable for real life as it is on the runway, and at $16, it's an absolute steal when compared to a Rolex. Though it debuted during next year's collections, it lands on counters later this month. We're counting down the minutes . . .
