Often, beauty trends seen on the fashion runways seem just out of reach for the average woman. But what about these jewel-covered lips seen on the Dior Haute Couture Spring 2013 catwalk? Makeup artist Pat McGrath painted on Dior Addict Gloss in Diablotine and Princess (both coming this Spring) to form a base and then added shimmering Swarovski crystals to complete the look. This isn't the first time Dior has asked for added sparkle. For the design house's Spring 2013 ready-to-wear runway, McGrath designed eye makeup with multicolored crystals. But the question remains: would you give this ruby kiss a try?

Every trend has its season. And as 2012 comes to a close, there are three hairstyles that stood out among the most popular: the side braid, the topknot, and nontraditonal hair color. With the rise of Katniss Everdeen fever and The Hunger Games earlier this year came the resurgence of the side braid, typically done in a tousled fashion (as pictured on Elizabeth Olsen above). This Summer, however, the topknot, a favorite of Nicole Richie's, was the choice updo, but as Winter descends, topknots are growing in size and sleekness. Finally, the most loved (and hated) trend of them all: colorful highlights. Stars like January Jones and Lauren Conrad were spotted with pink and blue hair additions, particularly this past Spring. While some of these trends are fizzling out already, which hairstyle do you want to keep wearing in 2013?

The theme of this year's makeup trends was all about bringing the avant-garde to the mainstream. Lipstick and eye shadow colors were less natural and skewing more neon. Bright juicy tangerine colors were painted on the lips of models at Jason Wu, Love Moschino, and J.Crew. There were also magenta-meets-crimson shades that dusted eyes at Donna Karan and Miu Miu. Eyeliner also got the artistic treatment, with geometric shapes at Altuzarra and the pop art blue at Anna Sui. Some are more wearable than others, and they all seem to be sticking around, but which one got your vote this year?

The runway is a time for hair, nail, and makeup artists to express their creativity in the wildest of ways, but it's also the perfect opportunity for them to stick with the classics. And at Fall 2012 New York Fashion Week, many of these talents proved that red lipstick hardly ever fails. At Zac Posen, for instance, cool and warm tones were combined to create the ultimate neutral-red lip color. On top of that, geisha-inspired eye makeup and hair brought it all together for a style that was truly memorable. Tadashi Shoji, on the other hand, opted for a more elegant look, pairing MAC's Crimson Lipmix and chic chignons for a sophisticated feel. For Marc by Marc Jacobs, sleek ponytails and a custom-blended red lip look (by Shiseido's Dick Page) lent a minimalistic style to the catwalks. In a recent appearance on her mother's show, The Talk, frequent hair-color-changer Kelly Osbourne had a few things to say about thirtysomethings and out-there hair color. "To me, I'm 27, I've got three years left, the way I look at it, to have fun with it," she explained, adding, "Because once you're 30, you look like a right idiot walking around with like rainbow, bright color hair." While it may be a big ouch to tricenarians, even 37-year-old cohost Sara Gilbert seemed to agree with Kelly.

And even though the majority of stars tend to have wild strands in their teens and 20s, some, such as Drew Barrymore, Juliette Lewis, and even Julia Roberts, have opted for colorful looks in their 30s and beyond. Recently, Sergeant Major of the Army Raymond Chandler posted a message on Facebook saying that he and his staff will be changing Army grooming standards over the next few months and asking Internet denizens to "give me your thoughts on earrings for females in ACUs [Army combat uniforms], or if French-tipped fingernails should be allowed." Since then, there's also been discussion about making ponytails verboten, and Chandler told the Army Times, "I would assume there are going to be some changes. Exactly what they are it’s too early to tell.”

In recent years, the Army has loosened restrictions on everything from piercings to visible tattoos (you can now have them on your hands and neck), and Chandler also suggested that he would consider changing those standards. However, given the fact that men in the Army are allowed mustaches and anyone can have knuckle tattoos, it seems a bit odd to deny women nice-looking hands and comfortable hair. What do you say? Should the US Army be taking steps like these to control its soldiers looks?
