Red lips on hair accessories are everywhere right now. If you're a fan of Glee like I am, then you'll know that guidance counselor (and germaphobe redhead) Emma Pillsbury is always one to put together the most amazing vintage-looking outfits — complete with kitschy accessories. Most recently, I adored the oversize old-school rotary telephone pin she sported in last week's episode, but the similarly quirky owl sweater clips she proudly wore earlier this season are the inspiration behind this post. Here are a few owl-themed beauty goods — some even vintage — that would make excellent additions to any Emma-style ensemble.

Over the weekend at the 17th annual Race to Erase MS event in LA, Avril Lavigne wore a delicate-looking sparkling bow in her hair. But since this is Avril we're talking about, she roughed up the turquoise hair accessory with punky accents like underlying black streaks and lots and lots of smudged blue eye makeup to match. My favorite part of her look, however, is how she incorporated a classic cameo into her ensemble. From traditional to nontraditional, here are a few different ways you can make a cameo.

Scunci Classic Pins ($1.29) were a staple for me growing up, and I still go through a whole heck of a lot of bobby pins, but different pins work well or less well depending on your hair type, as reader bellazmom found out. She says:

"Maybe I need more practice, but these seem to slip out of my daughter's hair. She needs to wear a bun for ballet, and while I am no stylist, it seems like they slide around in her hair. I'd like to give Diane Kruger several enthusiastic rounds of applause for turning classic styles into something with an edge. Remember her fashionable twisty ponytail or her breezy summertime braids?

At yesterday's Inglourious Basterds premiere in Berlin, Diane's dramatically dark eye makeup and bold, matte lipstick made a statement. And the creative use of bobby pins in her waved hairstyle made for a truly inventive way to use these standard, everyday metal clips. Notice how the pins almost mock a side-braid from afar.

Pins are a great tool for stretching out a haircut and making a style that's growing out look more manageable. And I now have a newfound love for them, thanks to Diane.
