Get Kate Walsh's Loose Sundance Bun

Kate Walsh arrived at Legion's Sundance Film Festival premiere looking enviably glam-casual, with understated makeup and a sweet, messy bun that looked easy and red carpet appropriate at the same time.

Kate Walsh arrived at Legion's Sundance Film Festival premiere looking enviably glam-casual, with understated makeup and a sweet, messy bun that looked easy and red carpet appropriate at the same time. I think this look would be absolutely perfect for Valentine's Day or a date night—some time you want to look sophisticated but romantic.

To begin, spray wet hair with a lightweight styling spray, like David Babaii Mise En Plise Light Styling Spray ($12.95). Then, blow dry at least semistraight, adding your flat iron if you need it. Once your hair is dry, separate the very front sections (from right above your ear forward) from the rest of your hair, and pin everything but those back into a simple bun at the nape of your neck. Take a large barrel curling iron (about one and a half inches) and lightly curl the front sections. If your hair is fine or doesn't take a curl well, spray on some hairspray, like Extra Hold Hair Spray by Nivea ($9.50), before you curl to help keep the look together. For everyone else, after you've curled, run your fingers through a couple of times to loosen the curls up, spritz on some hairspray if you'd like, and you're ready to go.

Get Jennifer Lopez's Bun Two Different Ways

Jennifer Lopez provided lots of shock value donning that skintight sparkly bodysuit during her New Year's Eve performance on Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve.

Jennifer Lopez provided lots of shock value donning that skintight sparkly bodysuit during her New Year's Eve performance on Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve. Yesterday, she dazzled once again — but this time, it was in a more subtle way. At the Miami Dolphins game, Jennifer wore a classic, simple bun to complement her neutral makeup. A bun is a perfect way to dress up any style, and you don't need a license in hairdressing to accomplish this updo. Get my tips on recreating this look two ways when you read more.

For a Cinnamon-Bun Style:

  • For control and to prevent flyaways, first apply a gel to your hair. Next, gather your locks back into a high-slung ponytail.
  • Smooth out any bumps by lightly combing through and patting down with a comb.
  • Twist the ponytail several times and then wrap it around the hair elastic to form a coil shape. Essentially, you want the shape to look like a cinnamon bun. Use two to three hairpins to secure.
  • Simply spritz with hairspray to hold.

For a Donut-Hole Style:

  • Make the donut-hole shape by using a sock as your template. (Yes, a sock.) Start by cutting out the toe portion of a thick sock. Now the sock will be open on both ends. Roll the remaining portion into a circular tube. It should resemble a donut shape when you're through.
  • Gather hair into a ponytail, securing it with an elastic. Now, insert the ponytail through the rolled sock, just as you would do with a scrunchie.
  • Spread the hair over the edges of the sock, around the donut shape, completely covering the sock.
  • Secure the donut-shaped bun with another elastic band. Now, wind the remaining hair around the bun, tucking and pinning as you go.
  • Finish off with hairspray to hold.

Good Buns Are Hard to Find

If you're trying to make your barbecue a little healthier by grilling up salmon burgers instead of ones made out of beef, don't skimp on the buns.

If you're trying to make your barbecue a little healthier by grilling up salmon burgers instead of ones made out of beef, don't skimp on the buns. It is easy to be fooled by ones that look healthy, but still have enriched flour listed as the first ingredient. As you'll recall, enriched flour is made when good old healthy wheat flour is processed and stripped of all the nutrients, and then companies add a little back in. The word "enriched" sounds healthy, but this is not what you want to be eating.

Go on a bun mission to find ones made with whole wheat flour. But don't stop there — make sure your buns are free of corn syrup as well. If you're in a bun conundrum and can't find any made with healthy ingredients, pick up some regular bread and use slices of that as your bun.

Back in September when Spring 2009 Fashion Week was going down, I mentioned that a bun trend seemed to be surfacing. Fast forward a few months, and I'm not surprised to see lots of buns on different Hollywood hons.

Take Diane Kruger and Nicole Kidman (pictured right), for instance. While my hair isn't quite long enough to wear this classic style — and I'll have to stick to the cinnamon sticky variety for now — let's see if you can guess who's wearing this chic updo with a twist.

Beauty How To

How-To: Create A Classic Loopy Bun

The loopy bun is the complete opposite of shaggy, low-maintenance hair.

The loopy bun is the complete opposite of shaggy, low-maintenance hair. But for those of you who are getting ready for prom or a formal event, this classic hairstyle is an elegant option. The trick is to make it look more modern and less severe. Instead of slicking the front of your hair back Evita-style, try styling hair when it is dry and don't use any gel. Also, let loose tendrils fall around your face and muss the loops in the back once you are finished for a more unkempt look.

Trend Alert: Spring's Haute Hair

Last week we saw lots of haute hair and makeup from the catwalks of the 2008 Spring Couture Fashion Shows.

Last week we saw lots of haute hair and makeup from the catwalks of the 2008 Spring Couture Fashion Shows. While most of the looks were wild and over-the-top, there was one traditional hair theme that seemed to keep popping up. Whether it was styled tight and low at Valentino, in the middle of the head and accessorized at Armani Privè or worn high with some height at the crown at Chanel, the bun is this moment's "it" hair. Love it or hate it, even celebs are sporting it as their style of choice on weekends.

Trend Alert: The Sunday Bun

Ah, I love seeing celebrities looking natural and down-to-earth.

Ah, I love seeing celebrities looking natural and down-to-earth. This is the kind of hairstyle that everybody wears when you can't be bothered to primp, but you've got to get out of the house and get your day started. I like to call this look the Sunday bun, but really it's just a casual, messy updo that requires only a hair elastic or clip and serves the purpose of getting your hair out of the way.

Katherine Heigl wears hers low, while Hayden Panettiere and Christina Aguilera take it higher. I'd love to see stars stepping out in easy, low-maintenance styles like this more frequently. What beauty look do you wish you saw more of in Hollywood?

Is it the summer of braids or what?

Is it the summer of braids or what? Sarah Jessica Parker was wearing a plaited bun at the opening of a Valentino fashion exhibition in Rome. I'm not sure that this heavy look is the most flattering choice for her, but I could be in the minority. What do you think of SJP's 'do?

Who Looks Better in a Ballet Bun?

Both Mischa Barton and Lindsay Lohan opted for mature ballet-style buns at the Costume Institute Gala in NYC.

Both Mischa Barton and Lindsay Lohan opted for mature ballet-style buns at the Costume Institute Gala in NYC. Although they both look very pretty, I think Mischa pulled off her bun with just a tad more class, since it was smoother and sleeker than LL's messier 'do. Who do you think looked better?
