3-Layer Nails Make For the Ultimate Polish Trifecta at Costello Tagliapietra

What do you get when you sandwich a classic red polish in between a deep, rich brown and a heady black-brown?

What do you get when you sandwich a classic red polish in between a deep, rich brown and a heady black-brown? Why, the ultimate trifecta of cool nail polish palettes, of course. At Costello Tagliapietra's New York Fashion Week Fall 2012 show, models donned manicures featuring a clever "stacking" of three different richly hued shades: Essie's Carry On, followed by Bordeaux, and Little Brown Dress, respectively.

The result was "beautiful, elegant, and warm," according to Essie founder Essie Weingarten (for Beauty.com), who also recommends experimenting with mixing and matching the above colors to create your own unique formulation. The key, however, is to allow two minutes of drying time in between each layer. And while you wait? "Have a glass of bordeaux in between," she quips. See more of the rich red manicure up close now.

Get the Sweater-fied Hair Effect From Richard Chai Love

You know that amazing moment when you pull off a sweater and your hair looks perfectly disheveled immediately thereafter?

You know that amazing moment when you pull off a sweater and your hair looks perfectly disheveled immediately thereafter? That's just the effect hairstylist Kevin Ryan (for Aveda) wanted to capture when creating the lifted, slightly mussed coiffures at Richard Chai Love.

To create the play on texture, particularly at the crown, Ryan began by spritzing the brand's Volumizing Tonic on models' hair. After blow-drying, he applied Brilliant Humectant to slick back the sides and added Control Granules for extra texture. Then, right before they hit the runway, Ryan switched around models' hair parts to create what he calls a "jump up on the front." The result was pretty hair with a little "strange volume" — sans the static cling, of course. See shots of the lived-in hair up close and learn more about the androgynous makeup and nail looks now.

Manicure Monday: Essie's Illustrious Effects

Essie's new Luxeffects holiday collection is really exceptional — there's not a single special effect coat that's disappointing or not worth your time.

Essie's new Luxeffects holiday collection is really exceptional — there's not a single special effect coat that's disappointing or not worth your time. In fact, most of them are so pretty that it's cool to wear them without any other polish. Shine of the Times, which looks like the "fire" inside an opal, looks amazing all by itself, and it's even better with a little bit of silver glitter Set in Stones or rose glitter A Cut Above layered on the tips.

The other two shades are As Gold As It Gets, a pretty soft gilt shimmer, and
Pure Pearlfection, which gives nails a mother of pearl effect. They're great as well, but best layered over an opaque polish. As Gold As It Gets looks amazing over black, charcoal, or navy, and Pure Pearlfection is a great topper for dove gray or orchid shades.

The majority of you were loving Kristen Stewart's ensemble at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards, but did you happen to catch a glimpse of her dark blue nail polish? To complement her Balmain minidress, which was accentuated with spikes and safety pins, manicurist Ashlie Johnson applied Essie's Midnight Cami ($8) to Kristen's nails. "It's a gorgeous deep rich blue that looked amazing with her red studded dress, and also suits Kristen's daily style," Johnson said. Will you be trying this shade out?

Essie and Toms Shoes Pair Up For a Good Cause

For people living in developing countries who are often unable to afford shoes, going barefoot can lead to afflictions ranging from soil-transmitted diseases to cuts that can lead to infections.

For people living in developing countries who are often unable to afford shoes, going barefoot can lead to afflictions ranging from soil-transmitted diseases to cuts that can lead to infections. One Day Without Shoes, started by Toms Shoes, is a global movement in which people pledge not to wear shoes for a day to raise awareness on the issue.

And in honor of the event, Toms has paired up with Essie, giving away a limited-edition polish dubbed One Day Without Blues. While the pale blue shade, which mirrors the Toms Shoes flag, has already been snatched up, it's great to see two companies working together to bring the topic to light. Will you go shoe-free on April 5, aka One Day Without Shoes?

Paint the Town Red: Nail Polishes Named After Cities

There are many different inspirations for nail polish names.

There are many different inspirations for nail polish names. China Glaze's classic, For Audrey, for instance, is a tribute to Audrey Hepburn. And then there's the newly announced Mad Men line, inspired by the TV show. There are even loads of polishes named after cities. Recently, OPI launched its Swiss Collection, a tribute to the fine country of Switzerland, that includes a rich ruby hue dubbed From A to Z-Urich ($7). And there are plenty more where that came from. Find out more about these city-inspired polishes above when you read more.
