Try Julianne Hough's Braided Updo For Short Hair

With her seriously spunky hairstyle, peachy cheeks, and oxblood lips, Julianne Hough hit a beauty home run at Elle's Women in Hollywood Celebration last night.

With her seriously spunky hairstyle, peachy cheeks, and oxblood lips, Julianne Hough hit a beauty home run at Elle's Women in Hollywood Celebration last night. Matte, peachy eye shadow and blush were the perfect complements to her intensely pigmented crimson lipstick. But the real masterpiece was her elaborate twisted updo, proving that blunt-cut ladies can still sport an elaborate braid.

To re-create the stylish coiffure, start by weaving a loose, tousled plait beginning at the center of your forehead working backwards. After tying it off, tease the crown, slick the sides, and pin the back into a makeshift bun. The result is a mussy but glamorous updo that showcases your braid. Top off with bold, bright makeup à la Julianne, and you have a trendy-for-Fall beauty ensemble.

A No-Makeup Makeup Look For Women With Darker Skin Tones

When it comes to achieving a natural makeup look on deeper skin tones, avoid reaching for something too neutral.

When it comes to achieving a natural makeup look on deeper skin tones, avoid reaching for something too neutral. While it might seem counterintuitive, experiment with shades rich in color to find something that enhances, all while blending seamlessly into the skin. Think of your color palette like your favorite Valentine's Day treats: grab up some roses and chocolates to achieve your most natural look.

  1. Because deeper skin is often prone to hyperpigmentation, start by blending any lighter spots. For yellowish undertones, correct your light spots with a concealer, set with a powder, and then blend on a foundation that matches your skin tone. Red undertones can skip the correcting and just apply foundation, paying special attention to problem areas.
  2. Dust on a copper, amber, or tawny bronzer if desired, followed by a rose-colored blush along your cheekbone for a natural flush.
  3. For eye makeup, soft, chocolate-toned shadows are the perfect way to define. Enhance your lashes by dotting in between them with a felt-tipped liner, and apply a swipe of mascara on the roots to create fullness.
  4. Accentuate your lips by applying a gloss or lipstick one to two shades darker than your lip tone. Or, keep your lips bare, adding a dab of clear gloss on the middle of your bottom lip for a pop of brightness.
