2013 will go down in beauty history as the year of the It haircut, and we've got plenty of them to choose from. Jennifer Lawrence recently drove the star power of the pixie up a few notches, but there were plenty of pixies before her. Jada Pinkett Smith also knows a thing or two about It haircuts, as she's recently been sporting 2013's edgy style: the undercut. But 2013's first It haircut was somewhere between edgy and sweet, and it was the lob. Nicole Richie was one of the first ladies to rock this style, and she's kept it all year. All three of these styles are synonymous with 2013, but which was your favorite cut of the year?
Reese Witherspoon isn't afraid of a hair change, having gone from blond to brunette for a role earlier this year. And now the actress has stepped out with a shorter look. Reese has been teasing us with photos of the cut on her WhoSay account, but this weekend was the first time we got a clearer glimpse of her shorter strands. She was spotted with a shoulder-length lob over the weekend, and her color looked just a touch lighter than her most recent appearances. The cut isn't a drastic change, but it still creates a new look for Reese. Are you a fan?
Just when you thought you'd seen all the It hairstyles you could see for 2013, Rihanna, Jessica Paré, and Camilla Belle showed off a new trend. Short hair, loads of layers, and a set of heavy fringe are all aspects of this vaguely '70s crop. Rihanna was the most recent celebrity to adopt the style, and she showed off the cut first on her Instagram. Jessica channeled her inner Jane Birkin at an event last week, while Camilla spearheaded the trend almost two weeks ago. We're loving the disco-gal vibe of this hairstyle, and Fall is the perfect time to cut your bangs, but would you wear this trend yourself?
We can't say we're that surprised to see Rihanna with a new hairstyle on Instagram. In the last few months alone, she has cycled through a mohawk, a jheri curl, and even long gray strands. Now Rihanna is wearing the latest hair trend: the bob. The jet-black cut just grazes her shoulders and includes long middle bangs. We're used to seeing her in all manner of extensions, but something tells us this might be the real deal. Is this one of your favorite Rihanna hair moments?
You read that right! Our very own 2013 beauty icon award winner, Jennifer Aniston, had her signature long layers chopped off last week by longtime friend and stylist Chris McMillan. And now there are new photos! McMillan posted a picture of the two together on Instagram with too many hashtags to count. "Love! #JenniferAniston #bobhaircut #Flex #PerfectHairDay #LivingProof #ChrisMcMillan #newdo," he wrote. When she's not on the red carpet or making appearances, her hair is "usually up in a scrunchie of some sort," Jennifer told us with a laugh. "Chris just chopped it all off, so now it's just sort of there. It’s short! It’s at my jawline and a little shorter in the back. It's just choppy, like a choppy bob, I guess you could say."
Jennifer may have made the "Rachel" the must-have cut of the '90s, but her classic long layers of more recent years have also been a highly coveted style. "I was just ready for a change," she told us of her new cut. "I was ready for something new, to get it out of my face, so I could have a bit of an easier go at it." No matter how she styles her hair, we're sure this will become a new It cut for the beauty icon. See more exclusive pictures here!
Jennifer Hudson certainly wears her new short hair well — so well, that we’re considering making the cut ourselves! We caught up with her hairstylist Cesar Ramirez to get all the details on her dramatic chop, including how to know if the look is right for you. "She felt she was ready for a change and wanted to play with the idea of cutting her hair short," he told InStyle.com exclusively. "A fierce, short pixie is the perfect way to show the world how fierce she really is. We both agreed that going short is like a reward well-deserved when losing a lot of weight, and the long hair didn’t seem to showcase her personality."
A pixie style certainly makes a statement, so make sure your hairstylist takes your natural texture and face shape into consideration when finding an option that flatters you. "Keep your hair texture and density in mind when going short, and have your hair pro teach you how to style it," Ramirez advised. "For Jennifer, we kept a bit of length and volume on top to elongate her face, and it gives us room to create multiple looks. In wearing your cut, give it life, but don’t let it wear you." Great advice! If you want to take the style on a test-run, head over to our Hollywood Makeover Tool now to see yourself in the trendiest celebrity pixies, before booking a salon appointment.

In Hollywood, extralong hair seems to be the norm (hello, extensions), but we've always admired Allison William's natural brunette locks. But the Girls star just got a trim, shrinking her bust-grazing locks down to right above her chest. Those few inches made a big difference, and now we'll have to rely on Kate Middleton's long, flowing waves for hair growth inspiration. Usually women are trying to grow more length this time of year, but perhaps Allison's ends just needed to be refreshed with a good trim. Sure, her new haircut is a classic look, but what do you think of Allison's shorter length?
So you jumped on the undercut bandwagon, now what? Growing out shaved sides or even a short pixie doesn't have to be a painful process; just follow Rosario Dawson's example. Rosario covered her shorter side with a sideswept chignon at last night's Trance London premiere. Her polished look is just one way to disguise shaved hair. Ursula Stephen, the stylist behind Rihanna's famous undercut, shares her tips for lengthening the look gracefully.
Anne's latest look comes as a result of her role as Fantine in the upcoming film adaptation of Les Misérables. "[The haircut] is something I wanted to do for a long time, and I knew it was something the character did," she said. But as the time drew nearer for the big chop, she had reservations: "I thought, 'I really can't take it back now!'" A few months have passed since she debuted her pixie, and if a picture is worth a thousand words, it seems like Anne's more comfortable with her gamine look. Are you loving it? And have you ever had a cut that's made you cry?
