Inspired: Janelle Monáe's Archandroid Black and White

Yesterday, Janelle Monáe performed as part of the Voodoo Music Experience 2010 at City Park in New Orleans, LA. The singer's debut album The Archandroid is one of my favorites of 2010. Janelle Monáe is also known for her black-and-white uniform, which often consists of a tuxedo and saddle shoes. In an interview with BellaSugar, she explained, "As I’ve grown up, I started to extract myself from color. Black and white always makes me feel calm, and I feel more in control. I like to be in a focused, clear-minded state, especially when I’m working. I just like to allow the colors to come out and be my own personality."

Inspired by Janelle's elegant, monochromatic look, I found items that featured a similar tailored look and this same color palette. Two of my favorites are the PH 50 Pendant Lamp ($850) and the Fringe "J" Monogram Kim Candle ($15). Just click on each item to shop the rest of the look!

The Unstoppable Janelle Monae Wows Us Again

It's no secret that we're enormous Janelle Monae fangirls.

It's no secret that we're enormous Janelle Monae fangirls. Not only is she creative and brilliant (read our interview to see why), but she also has an amazing set of pipes — and on a superficial note, she's incredibly stylish and gorgeous.

Her newest single, "Cold War," has been on repeat on our iPod for months, and its just-released video shows a softer side of the singer. It's vaguely reminiscent of a certain Sinéad O'Connor video, but really, nothing compares to Janelle. If you're craving a similar glow to your skin, I've got three words for you: MAC Strobe Cream. A dab of this on cheekbones instantly brightens the complexion and can give you the same kind of luminous look. As far as belting out tunes with that kind of voice, though, you're on your own.

Trend Alert: Pretty Pompadours

Pompadours were popularized in the 1950s by a hip-wiggling Elvis, and the voluminous style is making a bit of a comeback as of late.

Pompadours were popularized in the 1950s by a hip-wiggling Elvis, and the voluminous style is making a bit of a comeback as of late. Just yesterday at the Cannes Film Festival, Kate Beckinsale was spotted wearing this full-on-top look, while Maggie Gyllenhaal donned a tame version at the 2010 Costume Institute Gala. And we can't forget singer Janelle Monae, who has made the high-to-the-sky pomp her signature style. To get the look at home, apply a volumizing product to damp hair, blow-dry using a round brush, and place the hair in rollers to create even more volume. Remove the rollers, tease the hair high, shape into the desired style, and secure with bobby pins. For a finishing touch, rake your fingers through the front to create lots of lift.

Janelle Monáe Talks Music, Style, Books, and Beauty

If you haven't heard of Janelle Monáe, you are missing out.

If you haven't heard of Janelle Monáe, you are missing out. Seriously. The Grammy-nominated singer has a smooth but strong voice like felted cashmere, feet like Fred Astaire, and style like nobody else. Fresh off supporting tour dates with Erykah Badu and No Doubt, she's sharing her high-energy show at the Essence Music Festival in New Orleans on July 4, followed by a performance July 6 at Afro-Punk in Brooklyn. Check out her Many Moons video and you'll see why a live performance is not to be missed.

I spoke to Janelle this week about her music, her inspirations, and — of course — her style. She's as sweet as she is intelligent, so read on for the interview.

Trend Alert: Volumized Updos at the 2009 Grammys

When it comes to awards shows, anything music-related usually brings out edgier style, and last night's looks at the Grammys were no exception.

When it comes to awards shows, anything music-related usually brings out edgier style, and last night's looks at the Grammys were no exception. While some were good, others were bad — and, let's face it, some veered toward the fug. Whether it was on the side or up high or really high, we saw an abundance of volume last night. Will you be duplicating any of these styles?

2009 Grammy Awards: Janelle Monáe

I have such a girl crush on Janelle Monáe, the dapper diva behind the Grammy-nominated "Many Moons."

I have such a girl crush on Janelle Monáe, the dapper diva behind the Grammy-nominated "Many Moons." She has a beautifully buttery voice and inimitable style — the total cool-girl package.

At the Grammys, she stepped out with a winning combination of glowing skin and heavily lined eyes. And her hair, as usual, rocks the quiff so well. Are you a fan of this look, too?

What to Download: New Music on iTunes

Tuesdays are big in entertainmentville: Not only do all the new DVD releases hit Netflix, but new music also pours into stores, including iTunes.

Tuesdays are big in entertainmentville: Not only do all the new DVD releases hit Netflix, but new music also pours into stores, including iTunes. So I take a spin through each week's iTunes music releases and pick out some albums and tracks worthy of a download. Here are today's selections:

Idol voice: Despite that goofy-looking picture and the fact that this isn't necessarily my favorite type of music, David Archuleta's first post-Idol single, "Crush" isn't half bad. I could imagine a me in another universe wistfully looking out over the ocean on a beach, thinking of that special someone with this tune blazing in my earphones.

Futuristic R&B: If David A. is a bit too saccharine for your taste, check out this super-weird, super-awesome album from Janelle Monae. You may know this artist from OutKast's movie soundtrack for Idlewild. Take a listen to the fun and funky track "Many Moons." I'm also enjoying her surreal cover of the standard "Smile."

One more selection that stood out to me this week, so read more
