LA Pretty reminded readers of Kiehl's new recycling program along with other eco news. ..
To celebrate Earth Day, we've invited Josie Maran to write this guest blog. The model, actress, and environmental activist has her own line of eco-friendly cosmetics, Josie Maran Cosmetics, and she's sharing some easy ways to do good for Mother Earth — while looking good, too. Take it away, Josie:
Healthy makeup would have seemed like a chore a few years ago. But now effective and healthy go together, and you don't have to choose one over the other. There have been some amazing advances in green chemistry that allow people to have amazing alternatives.
How To "Green" Your Beauty Bag
1. The first step is looking around your house for a bag you can reuse and turn into your "new" makeup bag. Even re-using an old makeup bag that isn't "organic" is actually the best thing you can do for the environment. Reduce, reuse, recycle.
2. Read your labels and keep the dirty dozen out of your makeup.
3. Less is more. Look for products that are multi-functional — or as I like to say, "multi-talented."

Josie Maran Gets Weepy Over Mascara The lovely, beautiful Josie Maran is making big waves with her line of eco-friendly cosmetics. (Read my review here.) Now that you can find it at Sephora, I highly recommend checking it out — particularly the lipsticks, which glide on like buttah. As for the mascara, which I haven't tried, the lasses behind EcoStiletto came up with a clever way to test it: Chopping onions with Josie to see if the mascara runs.

The eco-chic bandwagon is getting more and more full and jewelry designer Robyn Rhodes is one of its latest riders. Just in time for Earth Day, Robyn is donating 20 percent of the proceeds of this Rumi necklace, named after model/actress Josie Maran's (left) daughter, to Global Green USA. Depending on the metal you choose (sterling silver or 14K-gold filled), the triple-strand necklace featuring an Amazonite pendant will cost you $120 and $126 respectively.
As I wrote earlier, Josie Maran Cosmetics is a new, eco-friendly cosmetics line from the model Josie Maran. It features organic ingredients and is free of fragrance, parabens, and petrochemicals. The treehugger in me loves these ideas, but my inner beauty obsessive wants cosmetics that work well, too.
A lot of natural cosmetics I've tried just don't deliver good color or texture, but for the most part, that's not a worry with these products. In fact, one of them is superior to a lot of non-organic lines I've tried. For the full review and some color swatches, read more
Josie Maran Cosmetics has just launched! The model turned mother turned Dancing With The Stars actress has finally launched an organic, cosmetics line that's free of fragrance, parabens, toxins and petrochemicals. And to continue the eco-friendliness, it has biodegradable packaging.
Maran grew up in Northern California and had a "green" upbringing. After having a little girl of her own (Rumi, two years old), she wanted to get involved with an environmentally conscious project. Since she has ten years with Maybelline under her belt as well as countless magazine and runway appearances, Josie knows a thing or two about makeup.
Her goal was to create products that brighten your complexion without clogging your pores. The formulas are very lightweight, they contain high quantities of color pigment, and each of the products have been screened through the Environmental Working Group to ensure they are organically sound.
