Lorde has recently solidified her spot in the world of beauty with her signature vampy lipstick, but Rooney Mara reminded us that she's always had a soft spot for this moody hue. Rooney stepped out last night sporting a shade that looked like it was plucked straight out of Lorde's makeup bag. The shade was a dark, shiny berry, which looked diffused around the edges, like a stain. To keep the focus on her look-at-me lips, Rooney's eyes were kept bare, save for a thin swipe of liner and a few coats of mascara. Lorde typically likes to keep things simple save a sexy cat eye when it comes to pairing eye makeup with her signature lipstick, which is why the two looks are so similar. But has Rooney effectively dethroned Lorde as the queen of vampy lipstick? Or does Lorde still reign supreme?
This year was a big one for color cosmetics, especially when it came to bright makeup. Turquoise blues, hot pinks, and pastel whites were all major trends in makeup and nails in 2013, which made every beauty maven squeal with glee. And while we already know that Radiant Orchid is poised to be one of 2014's hottest colors, we can't help but hope some of the hues below make it through 2013. Keep scrolling to see some of the hottest pigment trends of the year!
White Eye MakeupSure, white may be the absence of color, but this shade made eyes pop in 2013. It was sketched in close as eyeliner and washed across the lid as shadow, proving that this seemingly simple hue is more than versatile.
Hot Pink LipstickWe gave our red lipsticks a break this year and embraced a sexier shade: hot pink. Diane von Furstenberg showed off the hue for Fall, and we taught you how to apply it with ease. This color looks gorgeous in the colder months, so you can keep wearing it through the holidays!

Celebrities were out this week to remind us that this is the season for red lipstick. Demi Lovato paired her crimson shade with her jewel-toned hair, while Emmy Rossum went glamorous with red lips and a high bun. We couldn't stop staring at Rita Ora's headpiece-and-red-lipstick combination . . . or Leona Lewis's curly mane with her scarlet hue. All four of these ladies were getting us in the holiday spirit with their lipstick colors, but whose look did you like best?
It was looking a little bit like Christmas at the March of Dimes Celebration of Babies Luncheon today, but don't go looking for a fir tree. Jennifer Lopez, Reese Witherspoon, and Molly Sims all showed their beautiful faces, wearing looks that were suspiciously festive. Jennifer lined her eyes in a subtly sparkling green color, while Reese dabbed a crimson hue across her lips. Molly opted for a gilded smoky eye to bring this festive theme full circle. We could see ourselves wearing all three of these looks, but which was your favorite?
Whenever Jessica Biel makes an appearance, she never disappoints, and such was the case at last night's The Truth About Emanuel premiere in LA. With plenty of stars showing off holiday-appropriate looks lately — think berry lips and jewel-toned makeup palettes — Jessica's rosy look was like a breath of fresh air. While a petal-pink lip feels more Spring than Winter, her glowing makeup look clearly works with black and leather, too. She balanced her bright pink lipstick with a soft, silvery smoky eye. To finish off such a feminine look, her cheeks were given a soft flush of color and mascara for long, flirty lashes.
Getting this fresh-faced look is easy to copy. Dab on some BB cream for a glowing complexion, then opt for a cream blush to give your skin that lit-from-within glow. While the rosy pink lipstick is the focus of this look, don't forget to enhance your eyes with a sparkling gray smoky eye and lengthening mascara for fluttery lashes. Shop our picks below!
Sure, red lipstick is festive, and you can't go wrong with a classic, but these stars are making a case for more moody lipstick hues this holiday season. Hollywood has been taking vampier lip colors, from deep aubergine to glossy maroon, for a spin. For darker skin tones, why not try a deep plum and gold eye shadow combination like Jourdan Dunn, above. Or if you're a little wary, pick up a burgundy lip stain à la Taylor Swift.

We're used to seeing Taylor Swift in red lipstick, but last night at The Weinstein Company's holiday party, the singer opted for a vampier version of the shade. When Taylor wears her signature lip color, it's usually a bright cherry red. But to complement her burgundy dress, she chose a darker brick shade instead. She completed the look with light eye shadow and liner, and she styled her hair in soft waves. The whole color palette is very fitting for a Thanksgiving gathering, but what do you think of Taylor's darker look?
If there is one lipstick hue that's synonymous with the holiday season, it's red. But sometimes, red just isn't going to cut it. So when we spotted Kate Bosworth at the premiere of Homefront in Las Vegas, a lightbulb went off. Red isn't always the answer; sometimes a shade halfway between red and pink is exactly what you need. Why does this hue work so well? It blends with both cool and warm undertones, taking the guesswork out of finding that "ideal shade." Plus, everyone wears red, so you'll stand out from the crowd. Makeup artist Kate Lee used Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet ($34) in La Malicieuse (available Feb. 2014). To get the look now, shop below for your new favorite holiday lipstick.
If you haven't heard of Lupita Nyong'o, then you are missing out. She has already become known for her outstanding beauty looks on the red carpet, and InStyle recently talked to her makeup artist to get her exact product recommendations.
Another reason Lupita Nyong’o continues to be our style muse: She’s not afraid to break out an ultra-bright lipstick regardless of the season. The neon pink shade she wore to a GQ party in Los Angeles is officially the high-octane alternative to the classic red lip. Rather than picking up a solid, opaque hue, her makeup artist Nick Barose chose Giorgio Armani’s Lip Maestro in No. 504 ($32), a lipstick-lacquer hybrid with buildable coverage. "A bold lip color like hot fuchsia pink is more wearable when you opt for a texture that isn’t too glossy or matte," he told InStyle.com. "Try something more sheer, like a stain or lip lacquer." Armani’s innovative formula dries to a slightly matte, velvety finish, and stays in place once applied so you won’t have to fuss over finding a matching lip liner — just be sure to clean up around the edges with concealer, or a pointed Q-tip to cover any unexpected smudges.
