(Non)shiny Happy People: More Men Are Headed to the Matte

It's no secret that the men's grooming market has peaked in popularity over the past few years.

It's no secret that the men's grooming market has peaked in popularity over the past few years. In fact, it's an industry that's jumped from $3.8 billion in sales from 2004 to $5.6 billion in 2009. It's also a fact that thanks to the composition and thicker nature of men's skin, they tend to produce more oil. Enter the rise of the men's mattifier.

"Men are not going to powder their faces or walk around with those oil-blotting tissues that women carry, but a mattifying moisturizer is something you can just slap on in the morning," GQ's Jason Chen told The New York Times. With a rise in offerings from brands like Kiehl's, which has a Blue Astringent Herbal Lotion ($11-$27), and the Matte For Men line on the market, the oil-absorbing products business is booming.

I think 42-year-old lawyer Karl Gerstheimer said it best when he told the NYT, "I don't want to look like Mr. Oily Face." Sager words were never spoken, sir.

Matte Lipstick Is a Big Trend, So Why Are There Only Two Choices at the Drugstore?

I'll always love Sephora and elegant department stores, but I'm also intrinsically opposed to having to go one of those places to pick up on-trend makeup.

I'll always love Sephora and elegant department stores, but I'm also intrinsically opposed to having to go one of those places to pick up on-trend makeup. My latest pet peeve is matte lipstick. Matte is everywhere; suffice it to say it's the lip and skin texture of the season. And yet at the drugstore today there were only two matte lines in the whole place, and what little stock there was had clearly already been rummaged by desperate fashionistas. Of the paltry choices there were, the matte I prefer is the Sally Hansen Moist & Matte in Charmeuse ($7). It's the true red my volunteer at the right is wearing. It doesn't dry your lips out, and it tastes like mint, plus the applicator's pretty cool. On the downside, the pigment's staying power is unimpressive, and it definitely doesn't stay on when you drink and eat. OK for a shopping trip or going dancing, bad for a romantic dinner or drinks after work.

Eye Shadow

New Product Alert: MAC Matte² Eye Shadow Collection

Just when you think shimmering makeup is the be-all and end-all of makeup, here comes MAC with a completely different concept.

Just when you think shimmering makeup is the be-all and end-all of makeup, here comes MAC with a completely different concept. Its new eye shadow collection, Matte², proves it's hip to be squared. (Oh, you know I love the puns.)

As you'd guess from the name, Matte² is a powder shadow with a matte finish. If you enjoy highly pigmented colors, it'll be a good fit for you—the 16 shades are intense. I haven't tried any of these shadows yet, but I'm curious to see how they work. My girl Temptalia has helpfully put some swatches on her skin so you can see how they look. The bold colors are a little too much for me, but the lighter ones, like Pen 'N' Pink, look beautiful! Matte² is available online and in stores now, so if you're not a fan of the shimmer, go forth and shop.

Coming Soon: Chanel Mat Lumière Collection

Watch out flawless skin, here comes the newest foundation collection from Chanel called Mat Lumière.

Watch out flawless skin, here comes the newest foundation collection from Chanel called Mat Lumière. Although it's not due out until September, this new formula is already making headlines. Inspired by light, Mat Lumière draws light onto skin creating an illuminating effect, all the while also creating a matte veil (hence the name). The idea is that you no longer have to compromise radiance for a flawless finish!

Unlike most mattifying foundations, which can make skin look dull, dry and heavily powdered, this formula leaves nothing behind besides an invisible velvet coating (made of good-for-you proteins) that absorbs quickly. All that remains is a smooth, even and bright complexion.

The collection comprises three products: an SPF 15 liquid foundation, an SPF 15 cream compact (which comes in a refillable case) and an SPF 10 Éclat Lumière Stylo Embellisseur (concealer pen). All those who suffer from shiny skin can now rejoice!
