Fall 2010 New York Fashion Week: Derek Lam

Being a model is nice work if you can get it, but at Derek Lam's backstage, the job really had its perks. Lead makeup artist and creative makeup director Tom Pecheux for Estee Lauder began the makeup process by layering Advanced Night Repair ("the caviar," he called it) under Re-Nutriv Ultimate Youth Cream, then gently working it into skin. "My favorite part is to massage the face," he said. "Massaging gets the circulation going, and it's special for the models. Sometimes they're tired and stressed, but you give a few minutes' massage, and everything is gone."

2010 Fall New York Fashion Week: Doo.Ri

"Usually, people go for rock, romantic, or hippie," makeup artist said of Doo.Ri Chung's design philosophy.

"Usually, people go for rock, romantic, or hippie," makeup artist said of Doo.Ri Chung's design philosophy. "But she's making everything for the modern girl today." The same could be said for Pecheux, who led a team of MAC artists in creating a sparkling, colorful runway look. Inspired by Chung's beaded collection, the makeup featured light contouring and no mascara. But the focal point was a matte red lip coated with glitter. ("It's green and blue, thanks to Avatar," he revealed.) To complement the look, manicurist Jin Soon Choi tweaked the current cement-colored nail polish trend by adding shimmer; the result, she said, was "chic, modern, and sophisticated."

The same could be said of the hair, which featured face-framing fishtail braids on each side of the head. The look was loose — realistic. "I look at the clothes and do a hairstyle that a woman would actually do," said lead stylist Orlando Pita. "If she did the braids herself, they'd be looser." To get the look, he sprayed hair with his Elevate volumizer, then straightened it with a T3 450 iron. Two fishtail braids (learn how here) and a ponytail elastic later, the models were runway ready.

Product Review: T3 + Orlando Pita Plump

Orlando Pita, the stylist behind some of the fashion world's most beautiful hairstyles, has collaborated with hairdryer heavies T3.

Orlando Pita, the stylist behind some of the fashion world's most beautiful hairstyles, has collaborated with hairdryer heavies T3. The result is T3 Plump Heat Seeking Liquid Hair Plumper ($38), a spray-on treatment that promises to deliver thicker, stronger hair with tons more volume. To use it, you just spritz it on damp hair before using the hairdryer.

The packaging is really simple, and although this is just a little detail, I liked the way the pump spray delivers the product. Instead of coming out in an angry burst, it mists smoothly and evenly. Like I said, it's a little thing, but I like it. For the rest of my review, including why this stuff may be a giant man magnet, read more

Christian Dior Cruise Collection 2008: Backstage Beauty

Last night in New York City, Christian Dior put on a fashion show to unveil John Galliano's 2008 ready-to-wear cruise collection.

Last night in New York City, Christian Dior put on a fashion show to unveil John Galliano's 2008 ready-to-wear cruise collection. The look of the show was very 1960s mod, reminiscent of the looks we saw on the runways for fall and of Sienna Miller in Factory Girl.

The clothing was full of color, and the hair was bouffant and dramatic. Stylist Orlando Pita either created beehives or teased hair at the crown and placed a thick headband high on the forehead. Renowned makeup artist Pat McGrath also created magnificent mod looks on all of the models.
