Katy Perry was nominated for an astounding 10 VMAs this year, but what stole the show was her new mauve-lavender hair. It's the shade she and colorist Rita Hazan have been working on over the past few months, hence Katy's recent transformations from brunette to redhead to blonde.

"It was such an exciting challenge to custom-create Katy’s color for her big reveal at the VMAs," Hazan said. "She is a colorist’s dream — always willing to take risks to achieve a groundbreaking look — and it was awesome to be able to realize this goal for her." I have had a small number of stark white strands in my hair since I was 14. Since I come from early-graying roots (jokes!), I wasn't surprised by their appearance, but have marveled at their lack of progress. They're not clustered together, and are only noticed by other people every once in a great while. They've never bothered me, perhaps in part because they're a rather pretty white. (If this is the way my full head is going to be in 20 or 30 years—great.) But I recently overheard someone lamenting a slightly different situation. She, too, has only a few white hairs (defined by her as about 10 or 15) but they're front and center framing her face. It's not a X-Men's Rogue or Bride of Frankenstein situation where there's one white patch, but they're all nearby each other, and she feels like they're aging her prematurely. I am not a big fan of roots or the "rooty look." I get the whole ombre effect, but that's for if you're in your early 20s, otherwise it's aging and makes you look unmaintained and too busy to care for yourself. Not a very glamorous look!

Now, if you do color your hair, 4-8 weeks is an appropriate time to wait in between. I'd rather clients have bad roots than try to use at home color or go to someone new for a quick root touch up—those usually lead to hair color catastrophes.
