While stars like Elizabeth Taylor, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Paris Hilton were adding even more fragrances to their celebrity fragrance empires, a new kind of star dominated the market this year: the musician.

This year, Shakira launched S by Shakira ($28), Katy Perry rolled out Katy Perry Purr ($45-$65), Beyoncé Knowles got hot with Beyoncé Heat ($39-$49), Fergie released Outspoken ($28), and Jordin Sparks launched Because of You ($13). Mary J. Blige even set records after selling 50,000 units of her fragrance, My Life ($55), on HSN.

The trend is just getting started, as even more crooners, like Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, and Justin Bieber are set to launch their own celebrity fragrances in the future. Have you tried any of the rocking new scents mentioned above?

Shakira Shakes It Up With Her First Fragrance

Today, we induct a newbie into the ever-growing category of celebrity fragrances — Shakira.

Today, we induct a newbie into the ever-growing category of celebrity fragrances — Shakira. The hip-shaking star plans to launch her first scent, S by Shakira ($17-$35), come September. (Incidentally, her US tour will also start the same month.)

According to José Manuel Albesa of Puig, the manufacturer behind S, Shakira was "extremely hands-on" during the whole process. The juice, which will feature notes of jasmine, sandalwood, benzoin, amber accord, and vanilla, is a nod to scents she had an affinity for as a child: chocolate with strawberries, honey, and a baby's skin. "Like a song, a perfume has different notes which together are the harmony," Shakira said of the experience.

"My feeling is that personal care and beauty should not only be effortless but accessible for everyone," she added. That's why you'll find S, encased in packaging with gold accents, in both midtier department stores and drugstores. And don't be surprised if the line eventually expands. "We have plans long term; first we want to concentrate on this and do it right," said Albesa.

Beauty Byte: Shakira Enters the Cosmetics World

We can now officially add Shakira to the constantly growing list of celebrities jumping into the beauty arena.

We can now officially add Shakira to the constantly growing list of celebrities jumping into the beauty arena. WWD reports that she has accepted a deal with Barcelona-based Puig Beauty & Fashion Group to design a line of beauty, fragrance, and personal care products. Shakira said that she is excited to use her creativity in a different medium, and hopes that her line will help "personal care and beauty... be effortless and accessible for everyone."

I like Shakira a lot (how can you not love an international superstar who audits a Western Civ class at UCLA?) but I'm not sure how this endeavor will work out. I'm a little on the fence with the recent proliferation of celebrity and fashion designer-inspired beauty products. What do you think of Shakira's latest collaboration?
