Taste Test: Jalapeño Jack Sun Chips

From Mexican curtido to lamb-stuffed poppers, I'm a sucker for all things jalapeño.

From Mexican curtido to lamb-stuffed poppers, I'm a sucker for all things jalapeño. So, when I spotted a new flavor of Sun Chips — Jalapeño Jack — on a trip down the Walgreens chip aisle, I couldn't help but drop one into my shopping basket.

Sun Chips and I have held a long, stable relationship that dates back to infancy. I eat the original, harvest cheddar, and french onion flavors with gusto, although I've spent moments wishing the fourth flavor, Garden Salsa, could've added more spice to my life. I enjoy the chip's zesty, tomatoey taste, but can't help but wonder why, like a real bowl of salsa, this chip doesn't have more bite.

With the new Jalapeño Jack variety, I will wonder no more. There's something about its invitingly tangy smell, its white farmstead cheese flavor, and the lingering kick of some seriously substantial jalapeño that keeps me reaching back for another bite. It's official: the new Jalapeño Jack variety is my favorite Sun Chip flavor. What's your preferred jalapeño-flavored chip?

SunChips Disposes of Compostable Bag Concept

In an era when eco reigns supreme, Frito-Lay plans to cut back on what may be its most famous green effort — the SunChips 100 percent compostable bag.

In an era when eco reigns supreme, Frito-Lay plans to cut back on what may be its most famous green effort — the SunChips 100 percent compostable bag.

A year and a half ago, the chip brand made noise when, rather than using conventional, landfill-bound, petroleum-based plastic bags, it switched to a bag made of biodegradable polymers that decompose within 12-16 weeks. But effective immediately, Frito-Lay will switch five out of six SunChips flavors back to the original bag.

The reason? Backlash over the bag's loud noise, especially from secret snackers. Although Frito-Lay is trying to develop a quieter, next-generation chip bag, for now, the only eco-friendly flavor will be the Original variety.

Are you as disappointed as I am over the fact that consumers can't get past a little noise?

Sunny Salvation For Planet Earth

SunChips® brand believes that small steps can make a big difference.

SunChips® brand believes that small steps can make a big difference. They have been taking small steps to help make their snacks in a better way. On Earth Day 2008, SunChips® and PepsiCo flipped the “on” switch at the first commercialized solar field in Modesto, CA, and began to save 1.7 million pounds of CO2 per year in the process. SunChips® has already eliminated five billion square inches of packaging. Their most recent small step is to pack some snacks in bags made of 33 percent renewable materials.

And now, an Earth Day preview. On Earth Day 2010, SunChips® will introduce the world’s first fully compostable chip bag of its kind.

Cool Idea: Composting Bags

According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, yard trimmings and food residuals make up 25 percent of the total waste sent to the dump.

According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, yard trimmings and food residuals make up 25 percent of the total waste sent to the dump. By composting, you can help to reduce the amount of garbage sent to landfills.

SunChips, which is an advertiser on our site, is one of the companies working to green its business practices, and I wanted to highlight its good work in this area. The company is working to develop the the first 100 percent compostable chip bag of its kind, currently planned to launch in 2010. So, instead of throwing an empty bag in the trash and sending it to the landfill, consumers will be able to toss it directly into a home composter. As a first step toward the goal, the company is making all 10.5 oz. bags of SunChips snacks with 33 percent renewable materials. This step, as well as the company's solar field in Modesto, CA, helps to reduce the company's carbon emissions by 1.7 million pounds every year.

There are actually a variety of biodegradable home cleaning products on the market right now, including biodegradable garbage bags and sponges. Check them out below.
