First up, the Pre-Fall 2009 collections of Giambattista Valli, Christian Dior, and Pucci have dropped--this close to the Fall 09 shows, there's no way these looks weren't cut from the same cloth... Samples from the Spring 2009 Obedient Sons & Daughters collection which will not be produced will be sold at a sample sale next week.  Blackbook offers their take on recession lingo adopted by the glossies and yes, "crisis chic" is among them.

Barack Obama has already selected a Hart Schaffner Marx suit for inauguration night, but that didn't stop WWD from putting menswear designers to the test. Not only do we find these sketches fascinating (some headless, some digitally rendered, some downright creepy) we also think WWD brings up a good point: menswear has a new icon to dress and an opportunity for his presence to breathe some life back into the genre. Having appeared on the cover of every popular men's fashion magazine in recent months, there's no doubt Obama is an influence to menswear. As for Michelle, don't even get us started on how much fun fashion is having hypothetically dressing their soon-to-be first lady. Check out links to such happenings right here.

>> The CFDA has been busy lately, discussing the possibility of sponsoring sample sales for designers who don't have enough resources to do it on their own, commissioning books — including a fashion-related cookbook, and announcing an upcoming three-year partnership with Mattel.  But Monday night, we'll learn which of the 2008 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund nominees will take home top honors, $200,000, and business advice, who will score one of the two runners-up titles and the $50,000 that comes with them, and who will try again next year.The first award was given in 2004, with top honors going to Proenza Schouler; since then, Trovata (2005), Doo.Ri (2006), and Rogan (2007) have taken the top prize, and the likes of 3.1 Phillip Lim, Philip Crangi, Rodarte, Thakoon, Derek Lam, and Thom Browne have all been runners-up.  Without doubt, the winner generally has name recognition — and is in favor at Vogue — but tends to not be the biggest name in the group (i.e.
