Despite Risks, Silicone Breast Implants Still Considered Safe

Almost 20 years ago, silicone-gel breast implants were taken off the market due to claims they caused autoimmune disorders.

Almost 20 years ago, silicone-gel breast implants were taken off the market due to claims they caused autoimmune disorders. But in 2006, after these claims couldn't be backed up to solid evidence, silicone implants became available again.

And now that five years have passed, the FDA is saying that while silicone implants are still safe, they come with risks. Some of the most common are hardening around the implant, reoperation implant rupture, asymmetry, wrinkling, scarring, infection, and pain.

Because of this, the FDA notes that women need to understand silicone implants are not meant to be forever, as the chance of problems increases the longer the implants stay. In fact, one in five women who get silicone implants for breast augmentation purposes has to have them removed within 10 years. And for those who receive them for breast reconstruction, one in two needs them removed within 10 years.

"Despite frequent local complications and adverse outcomes, the benefits and risks of breast implants are sufficiently well understood for women to make well informed decisions about their use," the FDA said. Do you think that silicone implants should still be on the market?

World's Largest Breast Implants Get Removed

In scary cosmetic surgery news, Sheyla Hershey, a Texas woman who got implants to have M cup breasts, has had to have them removed after succumbing to staph and fungal infections.

In scary cosmetic surgery news, Sheyla Hershey, a Texas woman who got implants to have M cup breasts, has had to have them removed after succumbing to staph and fungal infections.

In order to get her ginormous implants, she had to go to Brazil because doctors in the US aren't legally allowed to implant that much silicone — and with good reason. For months, Sheyla's had to have a special vacuum pump attached to her to siphon off fluid. She's also been on upward of three antibiotics at once because her body can't fight off bacteria. The entire ordeal sounds pretty scary and disturbing.

Does this story make you more wary of cosmetic surgery in general, or do you think that it was more a problem with the way Sheyla went about getting her mammoth mammaries?

The Newest Fund-Raising Surefire? Boob Job Raffles

While some politicians appeal for dollars in traditional ways, one Venezuelan candidate is going another route.

While some politicians appeal for dollars in traditional ways, one Venezuelan candidate is going another route. National Assembly candidate Gustavo Rojas is trying to help fund his campaign by selling $6 raffle tickets for breast augmentation surgery.

Rojas compared it to raffling off a TV set or telephone, although that seems like a stretch. It's certainly a great way to raise your campaign's visibility, though, especially if your target voters are plastic-surgery-loving Venezuelan ladies. If something similar became a campaign stunt in the US, would you laugh, roll your eyes, fume, or what?

No More Jogging For Heidi Montag

After undergoing 10 different plastic surgery procedures in one day, Heidi Montag, reality TV star of The Hills, became a new version of herself.

After undergoing 10 different plastic surgery procedures in one day, Heidi Montag, reality TV star of The Hills, became a new version of herself. Recently a guest on the radio program On Air with Ryan Seacrest, the host questioned her reasoning for all those surgeries saying, "But you had a good body," and Heidi quickly responded, "But now I have a great one." The list of procedures is long and includes: an eyebrow lift, nose job, chin reduction, her waist cinched on both sides, her ears pinned, tush augmentation, fat injections in her cheeks and lips, her back scooped, and yes — breast implants. After all that, I can understand why Heidi says, "I'm very weird about hugging people now — [my body] is very fragile." The reality star is noticeably bigger on top, now a size E or F cup (depending on the bra), and her enormous breast size means "jogging is also out."

I wonder if Heidi is upset that she can no longer run, or if she used to run for the sole goal of trying to lose pounds and inches so she could attain the look she was able to with surgery. Do you exercise to get "the perfect body," or would you exercise regularly even if you were happy with your appearance?

Would a Silicone-Free Boob Job Tempt You to Go Under the Knife?

First it was injecting unwanted fat into your breasts, and now a British cosmetic surgeon is in on the movement to make boob jobs less plastic; a trend that includes using stem cells to grow the additional tissue.

First it was injecting unwanted fat into your breasts, and now a British cosmetic surgeon is in on the movement to make boob jobs less plastic; a trend that includes using stem cells to grow the additional tissue. Professor Laurence Kirwan is taking the tissue from under the breast and placing it above the nipple, creating a more natural-looking breast augmentation. He claims to have completed 150 successful operations, and that his technique is more permanent than silicone implants.

"What I do is to move around some of their assets to produce the best effect. What we are doing is moving tissue so that the skin is tightened below, pushing the breast up and filling it out."

The operation takes about three to three-and-a-half hours and will cost you a pretty penny: between about $12,000 and $18,000.

For me, the most natural-looking breasts are those not altered by surgery. But what do you think? Is the only thing stopping you from enhancing your cleavage the fear of looking too fake?

Move Fat From Your Booty to Your Breasts?

Breasts come in all shapes and sizes, but some women are just not happy with what nature gave them, or how experience (read: breast feeding ) and age have affected their chest.

Breasts come in all shapes and sizes, but some women are just not happy with what nature gave them, or how experience (read: breast feeding ) and age have affected their chest. Some women opt for breast implants if they feel the need to augment their natural shape, but there's also a controversial procedure available for those who want to add just a little volume. It's kind of a two-for-one procedure that goes like this: body fat is removed from areas where it is plentiful, such as the booty or thighs, via liposuction and injected into breast tissue.

Concerns that re-planted fat could harden and calcify, making mammograms difficult to read, led to a couple of studies to investigate the issue. To learn what the studies found and how effective the injection technique is, read more

Bigger Boobs in 30 Minutes

Whether you're a fan of breast augmentation or you think it's just for boobs (yuk yuk), you probably know that getting implants isn't a quick and easy procedure.

Whether you're a fan of breast augmentation or you think it's just for boobs (yuk yuk), you probably know that getting implants isn't a quick and easy procedure. Most women take two to five days off to start healing, and it can take weeks to do so completely.

Not for long, though, according to a Dallas plastic surgeon. Dr. John Tebbetts, shown here, is appearing at the annual meeting of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons this week. He'll present information on his 30-minute breast augmentation procedure, which requires low levels of anaesthetics and promises to get the newly ample-bosomed recovered in just a few hours.

"The level of pain that our patients experience does not require any medications other than Ibuprofen which is available over the counter without a prescription," Dr Tebbetts said. ... "After the surgery we tell the women to go home and have a little nap, then get up after two hours, wash their hair, which helps them stretch their muscles, then go to dinner."

If it takes off, the so-called "out to dinner" breast augmentation could change the way women view surgery. You could wake up a 32A, then go out that evening a 32D—all with a procedure that takes less time than a dental cleaning. In effect, getting implants becomes a simple, quick procedure. I'm curious to know what you think of this development. Does it change the way you look at cosmetic surgery at all?

Free Implants! (But There's a Catch...)

For women who want breast implants, money is often a huge roadblock.

For women who want breast implants, money is often a huge roadblock. (Read this story to find out how people are affording these pricey procedures.) That's why an entrepreneur named Jason Grunstra has come up with Myfreeimplants.com, a site that connects small-chested females with men who'll donate money to help them reach that goal. The guys pay $1.25 to send a message to the women, and $1.00 of that fee goes to their surgery fund (Grunstra keeps 25 cents).

Some women auction their underwear to potential benefactors, while others pose for nude photos. Ashley, the 23-year-old shown here, is looking to have her second breast augmentation. Through the site, she earns $50 for sending users topless photos (sometimes in a schoolgirl outfit) and $100 for a nude photo. She estimates she's sent out approximately 200 of these photos, saying:

"It's a business thing for me. I mean, I hate to feel that way. Because I know some of these guys are thinking I'm their friend," she says. "I'm not really a fake person, so it's kind of a challenge for me. But at the same time, you know, you got to make the money."

Unsurprisingly, the concept has earned the ire of people who say it's an exploitative venture. But with more than 5 million page views per month, there's clearly an audience of women who can't afford augmentation on their own (and, of course, men who are willing to pay to help them reach their goal). What do you think? Is this a savvy move for the small-chested, or is it just a sign of small self-esteem?

You Asked: My Friend is Obsessed With Her Chest!

Dear Sugar-- My friend is absolutely obsessed with her chest size.

Dear Sugar--

My friend is absolutely obsessed with her chest size. She's no more than an A cup, but I think she is beautiful the way she is. I tell her this all the time, and I point out all the awesome outfits she can wear braless, plus she has a boyfriend who loves her and her small chest, but her insecurities about it are making her jealous and suspicious when it comes to his faithfulness. Granted his ex girlfriends have been a different body type than her, but they are still EX girlfriends, so it's obvious that they weren't cutting it.

She really wants to get plastic surgery, but I'm afraid she's putting too much faith that breast augmentation will change her self esteem. Surgery is only a temporary fix for a major self esteem issue. I can't even help her because I'm a 32 E, and anything I say doesn't register. I just don't want her to make a decision that could possibly be very dangerous. How can I help her see how beautiful she is?
