Karol G Looks Fierce AF as Urban Decay's New Ambassador, and, Yes, Girl — Bring That Latina Representation!

Urban Decay launched a new campaign celebrating pure, unapologetic individuality featuring five diverse ambassadors: Karol G, Lizzo, Ezra Miller, Joey King, and South Korean singer CL. This fabulous group is a collective of trailblazers who refuse to accept forced standards and instead champion uniqueness. They all serve as the perfect advocates for the brand's "Pretty Different" campaign.

I'm particularly excited for Karol G being one of the new ambassadors, because ever since she became one of reggaeton's leading ladies, she has been unapologetically herself, remained true to her essence, and experimented with different styles, proving her beauty goes beyond her looks. She's equally comfortable going ultra glam or with no makeup, she's rocked the longest hair extensions as well as a stylish bob, and let's not even begin to talk about the time she got Ghana braids and looked like a queen.

In the new campaign video, she embraces a glittery smokey eye with a clear gloss that makes her lips look extra plump. Her hair is short and sleek, although we got our hands on some behind-the-scenes photos that hint at another video with Karol rocking long waves and a more toned-down eye look — maybe using Urban Decay's famous Naked Palette?

Karol G is a multifaceted phenomenon who is setting new trends as she goes, in music, makeup, hair, and style, and doesn't subscribe to society's standards, which makes her a perfect spokeswoman for Urban Decay, a brand that has stood for being different since it launched in 1996, rattling the notion of what beauty is and putting its own stamp on it.

As a Latina, I'm so proud that brands are finally realizing the importance of representation, not only in race but also in gender, size, and style. I'm ecstatic that the models we're seeing these days don't look the same and celebrate diversity. And I'm beyond excited that Urban Decay chose Karol G, a gorgeous Colombian woman who is not your typical light-skinned Latina with wavy, long hair who has curves but is very skinny. No. Karol G has a natural tan, plays with her hairstyle, embraces her many tattoos, has voluminous curves that she loves showing off — and we love when she does! — and equally enjoys riding motor bikes and playing with her makeup.

I already loved Karol G's music and had been following her journey for a few years — Spotify knows Karol G ends up in the top five of my yearly roundups — and while we might look different, I still feel represented by her as a Latina and as a woman. In Karol G, I see a hard-working woman who doesn't play by anyone's rules but her own. I see someone who embraces change and makes the most out of it. I see a person who's not afraid of being vulnerable. And above all, I see a lady who is bringing us Latinx to the next level.
