There's Oil in Them Thar Skin Care!

Putting oil on your skin might seem daft, but it is not always so. It all depends on what type of oil you choose and what kind of complexion you have. Dry skin? Oil can help perk up dehydrated complexions, especially after months of suffering in cold weather. And while it's wise to check for comedogenic ingredients in general, even acne-prone skin can benefit from certain oils.

The biggest obstacle is getting over the idea of putting it on your face. Fortunately, you need only a few drops to cover all of your face. The idea is to warm the oil with your fingers, gently press it into skin, and if you wish to follow with a regular moisturizer, you can. (I find that I don't need one, though.)

I've been trying out more oils than an Exxon speculator lately, so for a roundup of mini-reviews, read more.

For acne-prone skin: Décleor's ylang-ylang aromessence calms skin and cuts down the number of blackheads. This is the product that first convinced me that putting oil on my skin was not crazy.

For dry skin: The avocado-olive oil blend of Sponge's Ladi Avokanto has earned a cult following. It's rich and emollient, and is particularly soothing if you're using a topical retinoid. Of these oils, it's the one that sits on skin the longest, but in the morning, my skin always has a fresh glow. Not a bad tradeoff.

For the senses: Pomegranate extract provides the antioxidants in Burt's Bees Naturally Ageless serum. It softens, smells divine, and soaks into skin quickly.

For dull skin: Kiehl's recently launched its Midnight Recovery Concentrate, which counts evening primrose oil and squalane (derived from olives) as its key ingredients. The morning after I used this for the first time, I wondered why I was having such a good face day; it wasn't until a few hours later that I remembered what I'd done differently before bed. It's always nice when you see a change, but it's especially nice when you weren't actively looking for it.

I have to say THANKS Bella for your recommendation of Decleor's ylang-ylang oil. I've only been using it for a week, but it is amazing. This is the product I have been looking for. For years I have had the oiliest skin known to man. Seriously, I used every product ever made for oily skin, and still my makeup would slide off my face after only a few hours. I hardly would ever "break-out", but my pores were so clogged underneath the surface. It was so frustrating. And the blackheads.... don't get me started. Needless to say, salicylic acid, retinoids, and benzoyl peroxide only were making things worse. After only a week of using the Decleor oil, my skin is so much happier. My blackheads are GONE. My oil production is drastically reduced. I can wear makeup all day without blotting constantly. It is like I have normal healthy skin! I am a total convert to the idea of putting oil on oily skin. I know this sounds like an infomercial-- but wow. Although the Decleor oil is expensive, it is worth the cost. Thanks again Bella!

So far almond oil and apricot kernel oil agrees with my skin.
To follow up on the jojoba thing I posted earlier, risqueredhead (love the name, btw), it did make me break out a bit at first. But if you can get through it, it's worth it. What's happening is it's making all the gross stuff surface. But in the long run, it's maintaining a healthy balance to your skin and keeping the stuff out. But who knows, maybe it really isn't for all skin types! I know mine is dry and small-pored and sensitive. But it works really well for my friend who has large pores, oily and sensitive skin. In fact, she's the one who got me started on it!
I've been using the Burts Bees serum (I just did a review on my blog): http://ellaprettyblog.blogspot.com/2010/03/review-burts-bees-serums.html I have blemish-prone skin, but I've found that these oils don't clog my pores - just moisturizes it perfectly. I did try using Organic Coconut oil on my face...it was breakout city - my skin was NOT happy - so I guess you really do have to experiment and see what oil works for you.

Jojoba oil breaks me out like crazy. I use a combo of olive oil and castor oil for cleansing.

Kcmosinski, thanks — I havne't tried Dr. Hauschka's oil. But I've found my skin is not quite as greasy as it used to be. Anonymous, I will check out jojoba oil. I've heard good things.

Thanks for the tip, I will have to try it out!
I have to sing the praises of jojoba oil. I used to use it as a kid, when my mother also used it. She's 60 and you wouldn't know it! I thought I had inherited her perfect, poreless, problem-free porcelain skin, but no. My mid twenties have derailed that dream. Suddenly my skin was both breaking out and drying out. Then, I went back to my trusty jojoba. The oil has the same pH as your skin's naturally occurring sebum. You can feel your skin go "ahhhh" when you put it on! It helps soothe any breakouts you have, helps heal them, and it actually expels any clogs in your pores while correcting the balance of your skin. I'm so amazed. I only clean with the oil now, no cleansers or anything. It saves you money, and I swear you'll be happy with your skin!
i like almond oil :) much cheaper than any fancy brand and you can get it at the grocery store...

great post bella, i have oily skin and i use dr. haushka's normalizing day oil...or i should say i used to have oily skin until i started using it :) apparently your skin senses the presence of oil on your skin and doesn't go into oil overproduction.
