How-To: Alicia Keys's High-Performing Braid at the AMAs

Since most of you weren't fans of Alicia Keys's red carpet accessories, what did you think about her performance hair later that night? Personally, I've gotta give the gal credit for always switching it up and testing out new styles. The trio featuring this songstress (alongside Queen Latifah and Kathleen Battle) was one of my favorite medleys of the night, and Alicia's slick braid stood out, too.
This look's fairly easy to re-create so grab a comb and three rubber bands, then get the instructions for yourself (or a willing pal) when you read more.

The trick to the sleek style is to first carefully part your hair into three sections and tightly pull the two side pieces out of the way with two rubber bands.
French-braid only the center section of your hair, stopping in the middle of the back of your head to secure with a rubber band. (Since the sides are out of the way, this assures you can get even parts.)
Remove the rubber bands from the side sections and pull all three together with one hair tie where the French braid ended.
Continue to braid the remaining ponytail and fasten with a rubber band.

Trend Alert: Asymmetric Hair at the American Music Awards

Last night's looks from the American Music Awards were very much your standard red carpet fare - wavy curls from the likes of Taylor Swift and Christina Aguilera or loose updos à la Miley Cyrus. Pretty? Yes. Daring? Not really. However, there were a few ladies that lived up to a more rock-and-roll style. Ashley Tisdale wasn't quite as edgy, but her twisted side ponytail was different and chic, while the others played up short asymmetric styles. Rihanna curled it up, Natasha Bedingfield pieced it out, and Pink did a little of both. I'm liking this slightly off-kilter look - it is the music biz, after all.

2008 American Music Awards: Queen Latifah

You probably already know that Queen Latifah is music industry royalty. But did you know that she's a bronze goddess, too? By featuring this shimmery tan shade on her lips, cheeks, and eyes, the look is cohesive and natural, with a chic twist.

The singer/actress stacks her bangs high, and since her hair's normally quite short, I'm guessing she's sporting some extensions somewhere in that multi-toned 'do. Her signature fragrance will be out in a year, and until then, I'll keep my eye on her - she's definitely a beauty icon in the making.

One thing I love about Alicia Keys: She's always taking risks with her style, something that too few stars seem to do these days. Her latest look centers on a jeweled hair accessory called a tikka. They're traditionally worn for special events in India, and if you like the Bollywood look, these tikkas aren't too expensive. Do you like this style choice, or could you do without it?

It appears that Leona Lewis looked to her beaded dress for inspiration when choosing her makeup shades tonight.

The British songstress, who won X Factor a few years back, makes those icy green eyes pop with icy white accents on her lash lines. Call it a whole winter wonderland kind of vibe, if you will. She keeps the rest of her makeup toned down with a glossy pink lip.

Wearing her caramel-colored hair in soft waves, her deep golden brown shades peek out from underneath. So tell me - are you cool with her style?

2008 American Music Awards: Rihanna

Peachy cheeks and bubble gum lips go a long way with Rihanna – I'm liking how her makeup complements her equally pastel dress. By choosing a lighter shade on her lids then blending up into a slightly deeper one under her brows, her jet black lashes stand out more than if she had chosen a darker shadow.

Rihanna's still loving her old-school waves in a bouffant style but the one thing I'm not too sure about are those earrings. With cropped locks, big earrings look dramatic and, this time, I think they're a touch too overpowering for her soft makeup. How are you feeling about this look as a whole from the neck up?

Taylor Swift is about to turn 19 in a few weeks, and it's nice to see her become a young woman in such a graceful way. Like Miley Cyrus, she hits the red carpet looking young but sophisticated - a good game plan, don't you think?

Her icy-eyed look is almost identical to her Grammys hair and makeup, and come to think of it, it's close to last year's American Music Awards look. Is she on to a good thing, or do you crave variety from her?

Pink's getting the party started right with her silver hair done up in a funky asymmetrical style. It's almost like she's got two hairdos in one: some old-school waves on one side and a straight, sleek pixie on the other.

Jordin Sparks proves that, in those immortal words of Annie's orphans, you're never fully dressed without a smile. Having long, lush false eyelashes and a bit of shimmery eye shadow doesn't hurt, either.

My guess is that Jordin has extensions to give her hair so much fullness, and as for that red bit? A streak of style brilliance, if you'll pardon the pun.
