How-To: Michelle Trachtenberg’s Costume Gala Glow

If there was one secret that Gossip Girl could reveal, I wish it would be about Michelle Trachtenberg's skincare regimen. At the Costume Institute Gala, her face was blemish-free. She looked like a Botticelli portrait with her smooth, ivory skin and rosebud lips and cheeks.

If you are interested in creating this makeup look at home, here are a few product and application suggestions for you.

FACE: Begin by applying a thick, moisturizing cream so that the makeup doesn't dry out your face. Once it's mostly absorbed, spread a creamy and sheer, liquid foundation such as Elizabeth Arden Intervene Makeup SPF 15 in Soft Shell all over and blend with a synthetic brush. Next, add concealer and eye brightener and use a makeup sponge for the ultimate blend.

CHEEKS: Then, apply a creamy reddish-pink blush such as Becca Beach Tint softly to your cheekbones and blend well. Only use a little bit - the idea is to create a natural-looking flush, not to define your cheekbones.
EYES: For this look, the eyes need to be defined, but soft. Start by sweeping a champagne shadow over the entirety of your lids. Next, apply a shimmery brown shadow to the crease. Then, blend a peachy shadow (great for blue eyes) over the brown to soften the brown. I really like Smashbox's Eye Shadow Trio in Smashbox.com for this look. Next, use the champagne shadow and add it to the 'inner v' of your eyes, extending the shadow halfway in on both eyes (using thin brush). Line eyes with a black liquid liner, add false lash pieces on the outer lashes and finally, apply two coats of mascara.
LIPS: Lastly, apply a light berry stain to your lips such as Stila's Cherry Crush Lip & Cheek Stain and top it off with a shiny, clear gloss.

Last night at the fancy 2008 Costume Institute Gala in New York City, the women arrived wearing fabulous gowns adorned with sensational accessories. Some of their beauty looks were favorable, and some left little to be desired. One of the trends I noticed was the semi-laid-back approach to hair. Don't get me wrong, I am sure every strand was supposed to look like that, but there was a lot more looseness as a collective than I've ever noticed at a red-carpet event. Love It or Hate It? Kate Moss' Costume Institute Gala Look

Kate Moss is like old cheese. That might sound like an insult, but what I mean is that she keeps getting better with age. Even though she's one of the world's most-photographed women, it's hard to tire of her face. Those cheekbones, those angles, those eyes! Compared to many of the other women at the Costume Institute Gala, Kate didn't do much with her hair and makeup. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if she tossed her hair back and slicked on some Rimmel eyeliner on her own. And she looks fantastic, no?

Tonight Diane Kruger looked like a cross between Kristin Chenoweth and an Austin Powers femme-bot. Doesn't sound like a compliment, but really it is. She was more daring than most, choosing a pastel pink on her lips and a similar tone on her cheeks. The rest of her makeup and her updo look lovely, but nothing too revolutionary. More than anything, like Fab, I'm really digging her dress. You?

Mary J. Blige is cool. She's got the It haircut, she's got the style to rock green eye shadow, and yet something here just doesn't add up. And by "something," I mean her blonde hair. Tonight, as every night, Dita is oozing retro glamour. It never ceases to amaze me how perfectly coiffed, manicured, and made up she is. Not a hair out of place, liquid eyeliner done just so, and ruby red lips without a smudge. She paired her flawless makeup and rosy cheeks with sleek braided up-do. Claire Danes looked rather flawless tonight. The smokey eye is done just right, the pink lip is glowingly glossy and lined to perfection, and the cheeks, well let's just say it looks like she's enjoying herself. If I had one thing to gripe about, and really I'm searching, her hair is looking just a tad too coppery for my taste. Regardless, Claire's done it right in my book. You digging?

Fergie went for it tonight: D.R.A.M.A. First she accessorized her dress with seven - count them, seven - earrings. But what was even more blaring was that eye makeup. She went really, really goth-chic with that smokey silver shadow. The pulled-back hair looks a little more sophisticated than the rest of the look. All in all, a little haphazard, but I'm glad she had fun with the theme. Are you?
