Phew! Now that I've had a little time to ruminate over all of the hair and makeup looks from the Oscars, I've come up with a few thoughts. While almost everyone looked gorgeous, I couldn't help but wish that stars would stop playing it safe.

Woo-hoo! Another fun night of Oscars style has passed, and although we didn't see anything too crazy, there was plenty of pretty to go around. It was difficult to narrow down the most beautiful looks, but these eight stood out.

Calista Flockhart's appearances on the red carpets are rather sporadic these days, but when she does show up she usually looks rather elegant. (Do you think she looks a bit like Audrey Hepburn here?) The hair might be crossing the line from touseled into messy, but other than that, I think her makeup is pretty and fresh. What do you think of Calista's look?

Cate is always so stunning. I love here how the emerald embellishments on her dress and earrings make her eyes pop. The rosy color of her lips really opposes the emerald in such a beautiful, complementary way.

Looking at Penelope Cruz reminds me what real Oscar glamour is all about. She really is lovely with her poufed half-up/half-down hair, smoky eye and natural-looking lipstick and blush. Top it off with sparkly ruby and diamond earrings, and it all comes together nicely for Penelope.

Compared to yesterday's Spirit Awards look, Ellen Page is a total glamour queen at the Oscars. I like how her updo has an easy feel to it, and her makeup is appropriately amped-up for this high-profile event. Even though she doesn't normally get this fancy, Ellen shows that she's able to dress up or dress down.

Luckily, Renee Zellweger's hair has grown out a bit since she cut it last fall, but it still looks a little awkward to me. It's almost the hair equivalent of mom jeans — just not a look you'd expect to see at the Oscars. (The color is beautiful, though.) Besides the hair, her makeup is rather simple.

I applaud Tilda Swinton for shying away from the conventional glammed-up Oscar look in favor of a virtually bare face. With her flawless skin she can get away with it, and her lack of eye makeup makes her green eyes glow. What do you think of this look for the Oscars?

Katherine Heigl is still rocking the Marilyn Monroe hair, and if I was on the fence before, I've warmed up to it a bit — although I do think it ages her a bit. I think the bigger issue here is the exact color match of her lipstick to her dress. It's too literal in my book.

Hilary usually looks stunning on the red carpet, and she looked good tonight. Her perfectly groomed brows, her stunning lashes, and her glossy lips all looked pretty. But I do think she had a little bit of a misstep in the hair department.
