BAFTA Honors Atonement, La Vie en rose and Shia Labeouf

While we were busy handing out Grammys last night, the folks across the pond held their own star-studded award ceremony: the BAFTA Awards. In keeping with many of the awards ceremonies thus far, Atonement and No Country for Old Men were warmly recognized, though the picture with the most wins was La Vie en rose. Marion Cotillard was reportedly "visibly shocked" to receive the Leading Actress award.

Atonement took top honors with the Best Picture award, though the Coen Bros. nabbed the prize for Best Director. Diablo Cody took home the award for her Juno screenplay, and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly won for Adapted Screenplay. Many of the acting awards were to be expected (Javier Bardem, Daniel Day-Lewis), though Tilda Swinton's win against Cate Blanchett and Samantha Morton was a bit of a surprise.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, however, the Orange Rising Star Award - which is decided by the public - was given to Shia Labeouf. He was up against Sienna Miller, Ellen Page, Tom Riley and Tang Wei. Shia was not present to claim his award.

British (and Not) Beauties Brighten Up the BAFTAs

Award season rolls on both in the states and overseas with the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards in London last night. Black, black, black ruled the red carpet from Thandie Newton to Sienna Miller in a racy see-through number and Jessica Biel whose blonde hair is thankfully looking better. Check out Fab and Bella's take on all the BAFTA beauties. This season's all-stars (and Oscar favorites) Daniel Day-Lewis and Javier Bardem took home the awards for Best Actor and Best Supporting actor respectively while Atonement won for Best Film. Keira Knightley seemed particularly excited, even smiling for once on the red carpet. Shocking. Kate Hudson wasn't there to accept any awards, but she looked hot in her dress while her movie Fool's Gold took the top spot at the US box office.

High Drama at The BAFTAs

If you were disappointed with the looks at the Grammys last night, no fear. Across the pond another red carpet was in full swing: the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards. Now this is the kind of drama I like to see on the stars.

Some of our faves looked stunning - Emily Blunt, Keira Knightley and Amanda Peet, to name a few. One lady in particular looked more Fab than usual: Jessica Biel in strapless black was a big improvement. Than, there are the risk takers; Thandie is always daring and darling and Sienna in Dior - that back takes the Trifle cake.

The British Academy Film Awards-England's version of the Oscars-took place in London tonight. Most of the women arrived red-carpet ready in standard long gowns, decadent jewels and bold makeup. Hairstyles, however, were a little bit more creative. Jessica Biel, Thandie Newton and Sienna Miller all had their hair pushed to one side. Whose "side" do you take in this hair poll?

Kate Hudson arrived at the 2008 BAFTA Awards in London wearing a stunning gold sequin gown. Her dress choice was apropos for her new movie, Fool's Gold, which is currently ranked #1 at the box office. (Go Matt and Kate!) Her makeup was soft and fairly natural-just like her simple single braid. What do you think of this red-carpet hairstyle?

BAFTA Noms Announced; Atonement Once Again Most Beloved

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has announced the 2008 nominations, which largely mirror the Globe noms - though there's (unsurprisingly) even more love for Atonement on the other side of the pond. The romantic Joe Wright-directed drama leads the nominations with a whopping 14, while No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood each nabbed nine. La Vie en Rose is another favorite, as is The Bourne Ultimatum, which is one of the few major departures from other recent award nominations.

The acting categories are filled with familiar names (Clooney, McAvoy, Knightley, Cotillard, Bardem, Blanchett, etc.), though there are a few new additions, like Samantha Morton (Control) and Tommy Lee Jones (No Country for Old Men). And apparently the German film The Lives of Others, which took home the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film last year is now eligible for a BAFTA award, and has a good chance of winning one with five nominations.
