Trend Alert: Sheer Bright Lips For Spring

Sometimes runway looks are really extreme, and don't always translate well into the mainstream - as evidenced by this hits and misses slideshow. Now that it is officially springtime, have you started to think about how you'll amp up your makeup bag, taking looks straight from the fashion shows as inspiration? Buh-bye to the black lip gloss trend that never really made it anyway, and hello brighter, sheerer shades. Whether it's red, fruit punch or soft coral, a wash of color is flattering and fun.

Take Anna Sui's Spring 2009 show in New York, for instance, where the makeup artists used Anna Sui Lipstick in #400 ($22), a sheer red. And over at Charlotte Ronson, pictured left, it was all about a not-too-glossy punchy pink. Check out some more suggestions for the faint bursts of color below:

Trend Alert: Orange Cheeks For Spring

When you imagine orange on the face you might cringe a little, thinking of unflattering Oompa-Loompa-like effects. But you might be surprised that orange blush can give a flattering sun-kissed look that's fresh, not gaudy. Seeing that many designers featured the shade during 2009 Spring New York Fashion Week, I predicted that orange blush would be a trend during the upcoming warmer months.

Makeup artists used MAC Pro Color Base in Devilish Orange at Nanette Lepore and Carlos Miele, and I've got some great color suggestions in my widget below. Tip: Use creamy orange lipstick as a blush substitute.

Paris Fashion Week Beauty: The Haute Hits and Misses

And so, Paris Fashion Week comes to a close. Chanel, Dior, Louis Vuitton, Alexander McQueen - OK, especially McQueen - all showed their visions for Fall 2009. Since Parisian shows tend to be more over-the-top and wildly creative than their New York counterparts, there's plenty to see here. If the trends translate to the sidewalk from the runway, expect to see matte red lips and updos galore this Fall. And maybe, just maybe, some terrifying clown lips.

Hair How-To: Coventry Fall 2009 Hair

It can be difficult for young designers to build buzz, but not for Matthew Terry. After stints with Donna Karan and Ralph Lauren, he started his own line, Coventry. Fashionologie has a review of the clothing, but I'm more interested in this beautiful plaited hairstyle. "The idea was to make the girls look as though they'd just come from a long horseback ride," said stylist Pasquale Ferrante, the hair guru who created the look with Davines styling products. Akiko Ogawa Takes a Twist on the French Manicure

Even though these pink nails were shown for a Fall collection, I think Akiko Ogawa's runway manicures would be a great way to welcome springtime. French manicures normally aren't my favorites, but Alisha Rimando created a fresh version by using four colors (Dashing Diva polish in Headliner, Dashing Diva, Cosmopolitan, and Debutante).

To get the look at home, read more.

While the polish is wet, apply Dashing Diva to the top third of the nail. Make sure that the color blends or fades well into the nail.
Repeat steps 1 and 2 on each nail.
Start with the first nail and apply Headliner to the edge of the nail.
Using very little polish on the brush, apply Headliner to the very tip of the nail, blending or fading it onto the Dashing Diva pink color. You'll want to apply it to about ⅛ of the nail edge.
Repeat steps 3 and 4 on each nail.
Apply Debutante over all nails. Finish with topcoat.

Of course, if you don't want to go the DIY route, you can always head to a Dashing Diva salon if you're in New York. (Much easier.)

Love It or Hate It? Gray Lips at Doo.Ri

Backstage at the Doo.Ri show, lead makeup artist Tom Pecheux revealed the inspiration for this grayscale look. "It's a contradiction between romantic and gothic and punk," he explained. "It's not black-and-white, but there is no color." He used concealer blended with MAC Lip Mix in black to create the sheer gray wash. While it's not a look you'd wear to the office, I thought it was a fresh take on the dark beauty trend. Kind of goth-lite, and vaguely otherworldly. Do you think it's cool?

Love It or Hate It: Kate Beckinsale's New Blunt Bangs

In the tradition of many a celebrity, actresses Keira Knightley and Jessica Alba have recently premiered blunt-style bangs. And now, it's Kate Beckinsale who has joined the bang brigade, showing off a modified version of her long hairstyle as an attendee of Calvin Klein's 2009 Fall New York Fashion Week show.

The British beauty is known for her signature, flowing locks, and the addition of bangs really does transform her features, no? Tell me what you're thinking: Is the change fresh and edgy, or do you prefer your Beckinsale bang-free?

Behold the Wackiest Hair at Fashion Week (So Far)

Haven't heard of Gerlan Jeans? Neither had I, but something tells me you won't soon forget the name. Textile designer Gerlan Marcel, who graduated from Central St. Martins a few years ago, has created a bright, bold collection that makes early TLC's style look like Grace Kelly's in comparison. (She showed her collection at Patricia Fields' home.) Subtle they're not, but these hairstyles definitely capture your attention.

Obviously, Gerlan Jeans is an artsy, funky, youthful line. It's meant to be out-there. But while I dig some of the patterns she's created, the beauty look is too much of an out-there thing for my tastes. What do you think - is this wacky fun, or is it too over-the-top even for a fashion presentation? (And doesn't the tongue-pierced model look like Elina from ANTM?)
