Trend Alert: Sheer Bright Lips For Spring

Sometimes runway looks are really extreme, and don't always translate well into the mainstream - as evidenced by this hits and misses slideshow. Now that it is officially springtime, have you started to think about how you'll amp up your makeup bag, taking looks straight from the fashion shows as inspiration? Buh-bye to the black lip gloss trend that never really made it anyway, and hello brighter, sheerer shades. Whether it's red, fruit punch or soft coral, a wash of color is flattering and fun.

Take Anna Sui's Spring 2009 show in New York, for instance, where the makeup artists used Anna Sui Lipstick in #400 ($22), a sheer red. And over at Charlotte Ronson, pictured left, it was all about a not-too-glossy punchy pink. Check out some more suggestions for the faint bursts of color below:

Trend Alert: Orange Cheeks For Spring

When you imagine orange on the face you might cringe a little, thinking of unflattering Oompa-Loompa-like effects. But you might be surprised that orange blush can give a flattering sun-kissed look that's fresh, not gaudy. Seeing that many designers featured the shade during 2009 Spring New York Fashion Week, I predicted that orange blush would be a trend during the upcoming warmer months.

Makeup artists used MAC Pro Color Base in Devilish Orange at Nanette Lepore and Carlos Miele, and I've got some great color suggestions in my widget below. Tip: Use creamy orange lipstick as a blush substitute.

Which Spring Runway Trend Are You Most Likely to Wear?

In the world of beauty, trends are like a time machine, moving both forward and back. While I just returned from the whirlwind of 2009 Fall New York Fashion Week, I'm actually looking back on 2009 Spring New York Fashion Week, which I attended last September. Funny how that works. Glancing back through the various springtime looks, I started wondering about which ones will make the leap from runway to real world. Trend Alert: Buns on the Run(way) at Spring Fashion Week

Whether they were sideways, polished, or piled high in a messy roll, one thing's for sure: buns were hot on the runway for Spring 2009. Vera Wang, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Tibi, and Lorick all featured some version of this ballerina favorite. I like how Wang even went for a French twist/bun combo (bottom left). What's your favorite way to wear this elegantly modern style?

Vena Cava Walks Like an Egyptian

Indie-girl favorite Vena Cava showed off its Spring 2009 collection, which was inspired by Egyptology. While the fashion fiends were plotzing over the design duo's new shoes, I was enjoying Oscar Blandi's "modern mermaid" hair and this take on the smoky eye.

Tina Turnbow led a team of makeup artists working with Stila on this look. Like the clothes, it was inspired by Egypt - but as you can see, it's far from a Cleopatra eye. Instead, it's a light, smoky eye that uses some new eye shadow shades (wait until you see the silver one!) and Kajal eyeliners in Smoky Quartz and Tigers Eye. What Do You Think of Poofy Hair?

When I was writing last week's America's Next Top Model quiz, one of the questions was almost, "How many contestants were wearing ponytails with a hump of teased hair in front at elimination?" The answer hovered around seven, but some only did it halfway, so I decided it was a bad question. So imagine my surprise when the look came down Zac Posen's Spring 2009 runway. This hairstyle is starting to feel stale to me, but it's clearly popular. What do you think of it?

Trend Alert: Orange You Glad

Orange blush is emerging as a trend for Spring 2009. I spotted it being rubbed into models' cheeks at Carlos Miele (left), Nanette Lepore, and Matthew Williamson. "I think it's a new way of using a bronze. Rather than having a shimmery bronzer effect, you can use an orange for a sun-kissed look," said Polly Osmond backstage at Nanette Lepore. She and makeup artist Romy Soleimani (at Carlos Miele) both used MAC Pro Color Base in Devilish Orange. "For Nanette, I mixed the orange with Cream Color Base in Brown. If you go overboard on the orange, you can always mix a little concealer in over it to it to take it down," said Osmond.

If you want to rock the look now, during the last few days of Summer, try Kevyn Aucoin The Creamy Moist Glow in Tansoleil. Or if you happen to have an orange lipstick, experiment with that.

Pretty Is As Pretty Does at Rebecca Taylor

Rebecca Taylor is known for her feminine clothing, so it only follows that her models would look girly, right? Wrong. "The clothes are very pretty, very girly," said MAC makeup artist Polly Osmond. "So we didn't want the models to look too girly." To that end, they wore only a touch of concealer and grease (think Vaseline) above the eye - no mascara, no foundation.

The hair was similarly uncomplicated. "The girls are pretty, so we want to go with the opposite," said lead stylist Dai. "It's like Daria Werbowy." For the low-key look, he used a thickening spray to impart a dry, matte texture to hair. Then, he wrapped hair around a barrel curling iron, leaving a half-inch uncurled at the ends to prevent a "done" look. Finger-combing the curls made them look easy, and the overall look added an edge to a collection that isn't usually associated with one.

The Unsung Heroes of Fashion Week

Nail technicians, despite their increasing Fashion Week importance due to the increased interest in bags and shoes, are usually relegated to performing their jobs while the models get their hair and makeup done. But changing polish eight times a day can be a nightmare for both models and pros. Exhibit A: On the left is a photo of model Coco Rocha showing me her manicure from the Thakoon show. Problem is, we were at Matthew Williamson. Today's New York Times has an interesting story where the writer, Natasha Singer, goes undercover with Creative Nail Design as a nail technician during New York Fashion Week. Give it a read, but be prepared to witness possibly the most unglamorous aspects of Fashion Week!

Rich Hippie Hair at Nanette Lepore

Hey Jimmy Paul, Serena van der Woodsen called. She wants her hair back! At Nanette Lepore, Bumble & Bumble hairstylist Jimmy Paul created a look that was very similar to the one Serena wore to Blair's party on Monday night's episode (if you got a perfect score on the quiz, you know this). So get excited: not only do you get to find out from a master how to have Serena hair, you can now tell people you're inspired by Nanette Lepore's Spring 2009 runway - not, um, a teen soap opera.

For this look, which Paul described as "boho, hippie inspired," Paul began with natural waves enhanced by Bumble & Bumble Surf Spray. "If a girl's hair is fine, we're using a curling iron. If she has very fine hair, we'll put in more Surf Spray at the roots to enhance the wave before curling it. If they come with waves that need a little help, we're doing just the Surf Spray. If a girl has dry hair, we're using Styling Balm on the ends. It's meant to look very natural." And the braids? "To open up the face, we're putting one on either side with a middle part and a few random ones. Some models have buns to show the details on the back of the clothes. It's a little haphazard, a little off-center, braided, and looped around with a few bobby pins. It's supposed to look very beachy, like a girl did it herself." So what is the best way to do it yourself? "It's easier to coax the wave out of wet hair, so spray in some Surf Spray, more towards the middle and the ends. It's supposed to be fuller on the ends and flatter on top. With a curling iron, concentrate more on the ends, you don't have to go all the way to the root." Throw in some braids and you're golden.
