Before we look forward to the 82nd Academy Awards on Sunday, let's take a look back at a few of our favorite looks from last year's red carpet. From the purple makeup Natalie Portman wore to Kate Winslet's modern-day Grace Kelly hairstyle, here are six beautiful looks - with tips on how to re-create them straight from the actresses' hair and makeup teams.

Hair Color How-Tos: Keeping Reds Vibrant

Ah, red. It's such a feisty color. It can be a sassy, fiery shade of cherry, or a subtle, natural strawberry blonde. Whatever the case, one thing's for sure. While the smaller color molecules of red dye enter the hair rather easily, they also exit the hair quite rapidly.

The most surefire way to keep red staying vibrant is to wash your hair less often. But, there are more things you can do to keep your reds refreshing. Go pro: When it comes to red, there are so many variations and tones of color. Plus, box color isn't as strong as professional color, so it's best to leave it to the experts. That, or use professional color only like you'd find at Sally Beauty Supply.
Sun protection: Besides water, one of hair color's worst enemies is the sun. Protect from fading by covering your hair with a scarf, hat, or even sun protecting product like Aveda Color Conserve Sun Protector ($14).
Wait and wash: After coloring your hair, wait 24-48 hours to help lock it in further. Trust me. It works.
Cold water: Warm water opens up the cuticle. Cold water helps seal it. Help prevent red color from slipping out by washing it in cold water instead.
Safety first: It probably goes without saying that color-safe shampoo is a must for color-treated hair. For red hair, however, it's an absolute must. Try Redken Color Extend Shampoo ($13) and Redken Color Extend Conditioner ($15).
Glazed over: A glaze will keep your red looking shiny and fresh in between colorings. John Frieda's Luminous Color Glaze in Deeper, Richer Red ($8.50) might just do the trick.
Depositing shampoo: Once or twice a week, try a color depositing shampoo and conditioner to keep the vibrancy alive, like L'Oreal's ARTec Professionnel Color Depositing Shampoos ($17 each) and Conditioners ($19 each) in Cherry Bark, Orange Marigold, and Red Clover.
DIY: Use ingredients from nature to enhance your hair color. Apply a 50/50 mixture of carrot and beet juice on damp hair. Let it sit for an hour out in the sun.
Get real: Be realistic about red. If you are going from a light blond to an auburn, it may take a few trips to the salon to get the true, rich red pigment you desire.

How-To: Reese Witherspoon's Hair at the 2009 Oscars

Just one night, yet two hairstyles for Reese Witherspoon! I enjoyed seeing past winners say a few words directly to the nominees this year even though, as Buzz said, it took a little longer than usual. Since she's already picked up an Oscar for her role in Walk the Line, Reese took the stage to help present the Best Director award.Hairstylist Mark Townsend happened to be present for her fitting of the Rodarte dress, and was inspired by the casual way she pulled back her hair to try it on. He created an elegant updo based on her impromptu dressing room twist, then later gave her lovely waves for the afterparties. See tips for both looks when you

Ceremony:

First, apply Matrix Vavoom Height of Glam volumizing foam to damp hair.
Blow dry with a large, round Spornette mixed bristle brush and an FHI Heat Nano Pro 2000 hairdryer.
When dry, give the hair shine and "piecey-ness" with a sculpting product (like Matrix Biolage Molding Soufflé).
Next, gather the hair in a ponytail at the nape of the neck and twist into a textured knot. Use bobby pins to secure the knot, hairpins to shape the knot into an uneven chignon with lots of loose pieces, and then add light hold hairspray to finish.

Afterparty:

After a quick brush out, spray three-inch sections of hair with Vavoom Gold Head Iron-In Control before wrapping around a two-inch curling iron.
Pull the side pieces back with bobby pins, letting a few hairs around the face fall out for softness.
Complete the look with ShapeMaker hairspray.

How-To: Freida Pinto's Makeup at the 2009 Oscars

I have a feeling the beautiful Freida Pinto could walk onto the red carpet wearing clown makeup and still take my breath away, but her Oscars makeup was incredibly flattering. Makeup artist Jeffrey Paul was inspired by the colors of a morning sunrise. "The look was about elegance," he explains. "It's about the youthful radiance of a young woman."

Skin: Use a mineral powder foundation to cover complexion imperfections. (Paul used Diorskin Nude in Honey Beige). Sweep a powder highlighter along cheekbones. Freida wore Diorskin Shimmer Star in Amber Diamond.
Eyes: Freida wore Dior eye shadows in Blooming Pink and Beige Massai on her eyelids, with Dior 5-Colour eye shadow in Night Dust along her lashline. Follow with brown mascara.
Lips: Freida wore Dior Addict High Shine Lipstick in Sheer Rose, a light-coverage warm pink shade.

How-To: Taraji P. Henson's Hair at the 2009 Oscars

Taraji's style at the Oscars reminds me that the cut itself is the basis for any great look. Her asymmetrical, layered bob provides the foundation and her hairstylist, Dante Blandshaw, walks us through the steps for yesterday's 'do. Personally, I prefer this straighter version (to her bumped under Independent Spirit Awards choice) so check out the products and steps below.

To soften textured hair like Taraji's, prepare hair with Damage Control to protect from breakage and thermal damage.
Blow-dry hair straight with a paddle brush and add a dime-sized amount of Universal Styling Creme for added shine.
Flat-iron first, then use 1.5-inch and two-inch barrel irons to give volume at the roots and bend at the ends - don't overly curl! - to accentuate layers in a cut like this.
Slightly curl the front to create a soft, side-swept bang for added height and fullness.
Finish by combing with a wide-tooth comb and lock in the style with a lightweight hairspray (such as Aveda Air Control).

How-To: Amy Adams's Hair at the 2009 Oscars

Do you know "the snood"? Well, you do now. That's exactly what Amy Adams asked Matrix celebrity hairstylist, Mark Townsend, to create for her. Using elements from this classic 1930s hairstyle, Townsend also looked to the styles worn by Tilda Swinton in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Amy's structured, but soft, red Carolina Herrera gown for inspiration. First, Amy's hair was sprayed with Matrix Biolage Bodifying Spray Gel and blow-dried with a large Spornette Mixed Bristle Round Brush ($9).
Once the hair was dry, Biolage Molding Souffle ($13) was raked through the hair to create a soft, piecey texture.
Next, Townsend gathered Amy's hair at the nape of her neck. He then looped it into a sideways figure eight stretching the length of her hairline, letting the ends of the hair fall over the chignon. He secured her hair with several bobby pins, to ensure that the style would stay put.
To finish, he sprayed Matrix Vavoom Shape Maker Shaping Spray ($15) for shine and hold.

How-To: Amy Adams's Makeup at the 2009 Oscars

It was a big night for Amy Adams. Although she didn't win the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in Doubt, I'm sure she was thrilled to be part of the whole shebang. Molly Stern, the makeup artist behind Amy's glowing look, was inspired by Toulouse-Latrec's dancing girls and the style of Klimt painting. How very artistic. Get me to a museum - stat. Prep: To give the face a glow, Stern used Citrus Purifying Mist ($21). Next, she applied La Mer The Moisturizing Lotion ($190), for a light facial massage. How relaxing.
Complexion: Stern applied Yves Saint Laurent Perfect Touch Foundation in #2. Then, she used Chantecaille
AquaBlush Oil-Free Gel in Frivolous ($42) as a peach base for Amy's cheeks with a peach eye shadow (yep, eye shadow) on top - Chantecaille Lasting Eye Shadow in Sesame ($28).
Eyes: Stern applied NARS Cream Eye Shadow in Maracaibo ($21) as a base. Next, she blended Shu Uemura Pressed Eye Shadow Pearl ($20 each) in Gray 960 with Purple 700 on the lid, up to the crease. NARS Single Eye Shadow in Ondine ($22) was applied on the inside corner of her lids. The top and underneath of her eyes were lined with Trish McEvoy Eye Definer Powdered Eyeliner in Arabian Nights ($16).
Lips: Stern prepped Amy's lips with La Mer The Lip Balm ($45). Then she applied CoverGirl Outlast Lipstain Lip Color in Bit of Blossom ($7.50), along with a sheer layer of Shu Uemura "Rouge Unlimited" Lipstick in Wine 265 ($23). A little CoverGirl Wetslicks Amazemint Lipgloss in Plum Crazy ($6) in the center of her lip added an extra pout.

Start with clean, blow-dried hair.
Create a left-side part and divide hair into three sections: The section on the right should have three quarters of hair with the remaining hair split between two smaller middle and left sections.
Pull the right section of hair back and secure into a low ponytail at the nape of the neck, just behind the right ear.
Twist the ponytail, working Aveda Light Elements Defining Whip into hair. Coil and loosely wrap the ponytail around the base, creating a flower shape. Secure in place with pins.
Add more product to the remaining two sections. For the middle section, add volume in the front before twisting back and pinning around the flower shape. Do the same twisting with the left section to create a layered rose-like effect.
Finish up with light hold hairspray (like Aveda Air Control). Shake head to loosen the look and offer natural movement.

Last night, Victoria Beckham was among the people who raised more than $4 million to fund AIDS research at the Elton John AIDS Foundation soiree. How-To: Alicia Keys' Makeup at the 2009 Oscars

Drawing inspiration from Hollywood starlets of the '40s and '50s, makeup artist Ashunta Sheriff offered a dramatically glamorous red-carpet look for Alicia Keys. Keeping classic stars like Veronica Lake and Lena Horne in mind, she went for sultry eyes and strong brows on luminous skin. Get started with the following steps:

Skin: Prep with Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Gold capsules to add hydration and a radiant glow to skin then follow up with Pure Finish Mineral Powder 5. Lastly, contour face with CoverGirl Queen Collection Bronzer (in Light Bronze) as desired.
