TSA Searches Hairstylist's Afro on Atlanta Train Platform

Dallas hairstylist Isis Brantley was shocked when TSA agents came up to her on the platform of the interterminal train at the Atlanta airport and told her they needed to check her Afro for drugs and explosives. TSA hair checks aren't unheard of, but they are invasive, and this is certainly the first case we've heard of a search so far from security. The TSA claims that Ms. Brantley simply walked off before her security screening was over, and that they offered to take her to a private area for the pat down, but Brantley disputes both those claims.

If you've ever been to the Atlanta airport, you know that the terminal trains aren't really anywhere close to security, and it seems truly odd that TSA agents would have let someone who wasn't done with her screening wander halfway through the airport before they thought to catch up with her. Ms. Brantley says it isn't the search she objected to, it was the public humiliation. Do you think it's reasonable for TSA agents to check people's hair (especially outside a checkpoint), and would you feel violated if this happened to you?

Meet the New World Record Holder For the Largest Afro

Now this is big. Aevin Dugas, 36, a social worker from New Orleans, has just been named the 2012 Guinness World Record holder for largest afro, which measures four feet by four inches in circumference. While Dugas gets her hair trimmed about three times a year, it's taken her 12 years to grow it out to its current length. Though she admits her voluminous hair can cause problems now and then, she loves her hair - as she should, because she wears it beautifully.

You've probably seen, or maybe even worn, an afro. But do you know about the history of this hairstyle? This natural look became widely popular in the late 1960s to 1970s, during which the Black Power and Black Is Beautiful cultural movements were in play. The style became a personal-is-political statement from African-Americans who wanted the world to see that their natural beauty (both hair texture and skin color) should be considered equally as beautiful as that of Caucasians.

Afros are maintained by using a hair pick, and compared to the stress and pain of relaxing hair, many people find it's easier to go natural. Even though afros are less common today than they once were, curly-haired people continue to wear them proudly - including Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu, who sports a version of the afro in the new Tom Ford ad campaign.

Announcing the 2012 Grammy Award Nominations

For the second year in a row, the Recording Academy has given a hip-hop artist the most Grammy nominations. Last year, it was rapper Eminem with eight, and this year, Kanye West leads the nominees with seven chances at the golden gramophone, including a song of the year nod for "All of the Lights." West is also nominated twice in the rap album of the year category for his collaboration with Jay-Z on Watch the Throne and his own album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Brit crooner Adele wasn't far behind Kanye, picking up six nominations for her album 21, as well as a shot at song of the year with "Rolling in the Deep."

Bruno Mars also did well, racking up six nominations (that's down one from last year for those keeping track), while newcomers like Nicki Minaj and dubstep artist Skrillex are up for the best new artist category. Nicole Richie Comes Up ACEs as Influencer of the Year in NYC

Nicole Richie picked a sleek black Antonio Berardi gown for last night's ACE Awards at Cipriani 42nd Street in NYC. Nicole was among the honorees of the evening, being named Influencer of the Year for her work as an accessories designer with House of Harlow 1960. She joined fellow fashionable stars like Agyness Deyn and Lauren Bush Lauren for the event, though Nicole was without her red carpet date, husband Joel Madden. To celebrate her award, Nicole spoke to WWD about her own personal style and some fashion misses over the years. Here's highlights:

On her biggest red carpet regret: "Well, when I was a little girl, my mom used to always get us matching dresses for everything - so I was wearing the poufy skirt version of whatever my mom was wearing and I had the worst, hairiest eyebrows and a big afro. That was before I was allowed to use a flatiron. So basically, my entire childhood. My parents’ house has framed pictures of those nights all over the house, and it’s terrible."
On how being a mom has changed her sense of style: "It hasn’t. I’m still wearing five-inch heels and my fashion really hasn’t change at all."
On her lines being so successful: "To me, success isn’t measured by dollar signs. It’s really about paying attention to feedback and talking to my customer, and I’m able to do that with the various appearances I do - and also through Twitter and Facebook. I’m really able to get some honest feedback from my customer, and I really try and focus on them and create what they’re expecting of me."

There goes another staple in award season - the Grammys are a wrap! The night was chock-full of performances from standouts like Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga, but there were a few statuettes passed out between songs.

Muse frontman Matt Bellamy took the opportunity to thank his "beautiful pregnant girlfriend" Kate Hudson while accepting the trophy for best rock album, and Lady Gaga gave props to Whitney Houston in her acceptance speech for best pop album. Lady Antebellum scored big with five golden gramophones, but it was Arcade Fire that won the biggest award of the night, taking home the accolade for album of the year.
