2009 American Music Awards: Alicia Keys

Alicia Keys never fails to look gorgeous on the red carpet, but she's also not afraid of strong choices, either. Tonight, she went decidedly retro (peep those earrings!) with blue eye shadow and a complex, old-fashioned updo that looked like it could very well have been worn by Lena Horne or one of the Andrews sisters. What do you think? Was this a pretty blast from the past or a look that stayed in the '40s for a reason?

Get Alicia's Popping Pink Lips and Rosy Cheeks From the VMAs

With descriptions like "impeccable" and "chic" in the comments section of my love it or hate it poll for Alicia Keys, it was obvious you were feeling her 2009 MTV VMAs style. Celebrity makeup artist Ashunta Sheriff created the flattering look using Mary Kay products. You know I'm all about the basics, and for just under $25, you can have the same exact cheeks and lips palette Alicia wore last night. Since the lips are such a focal point of any singer's performance, Sheriff wanted to make Alicia's lips pop, but not at the expense of making them look unnatural. To achieve that goal, she used NouriShine Lip Gloss in Melon Sorbet ($13). To complement the palette, Sheriff opted for a rosy shade - Mineral Cheek Color in Strawberry Cream ($10).

Alicia Keys always looks ineffably cool. Like so many other celebrities, she opted for a big, bold updo. Instead of the white eye shadow we've been seeing all over the red carpet tonight, though, she went for a flattering gunmetal-gray and silver combination that's less harsh than straight-out white. A little blush and a neutral pink lip kept her from looking washed out. What do you think? Is this look a symphony of subtle shades, or an off-note?

How-To: Alicia Keys's Glossy Coral Lips

There was no shortage of BET Awards beauty, but Alicia Keys stood out with a look that's fresh and fun. Her coral lips were pursed to plump perfection, thanks to a colorful yet glistening gloss. Oscars Trend Alert: The Many Shades of Red

What I like most about a red lip is that it doesn't have to be too fussy, as the ladies of the 2009 red carpet prove. Whether it was subtle and matte like Anne Hathaway or bold and raspberry-toned à la Alicia Keys, it just goes to show you that red-toned lipstick is always en vogue. How-To: Alicia Keys' Makeup at the 2009 Oscars

Drawing inspiration from Hollywood starlets of the '40s and '50s, makeup artist Ashunta Sheriff offered a dramatically glamorous red-carpet look for Alicia Keys. Keeping classic stars like Veronica Lake and Lena Horne in mind, she went for sultry eyes and strong brows on luminous skin. Get started with the following steps:

Skin: Prep with Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Gold capsules to add hydration and a radiant glow to skin then follow up with Pure Finish Mineral Powder 5. Lastly, contour face with CoverGirl Queen Collection Bronzer (in Light Bronze) as desired.
Eyes: Mask under-eye circles with Mary Kay Concealer (in Beige 2). Highlight eyes with Elizabeth Arden Smoky Eyes Powder Pencil and add Shu Uemura Smoky Layers Lashes for extra drama.

Brows: Highlight brows with a brown Dior Eyebrow Pencil before softening with Dior Brow Gel (in shiny blonde).

Some people think her "Another Way to Die" song deserved a nomination tonight, but I think she has winning style. Do you?

How-To: Alicia Keys's High-Performing Braid at the AMAs

Since most of you weren't fans of Alicia Keys's red carpet accessories, what did you think about her performance hair later that night? Personally, I've gotta give the gal credit for always switching it up and testing out new styles. The trio featuring this songstress (alongside Queen Latifah and Kathleen Battle) was one of my favorite medleys of the night, and Alicia's slick braid stood out, too.
This look's fairly easy to re-create so grab a comb and three rubber bands, then get the instructions for yourself (or a willing pal) when you read more.

The trick to the sleek style is to first carefully part your hair into three sections and tightly pull the two side pieces out of the way with two rubber bands.
French-braid only the center section of your hair, stopping in the middle of the back of your head to secure with a rubber band. (Since the sides are out of the way, this assures you can get even parts.)
Remove the rubber bands from the side sections and pull all three together with one hair tie where the French braid ended.
Continue to braid the remaining ponytail and fasten with a rubber band.

2008 American Music Awards: Alicia Keys

One thing I love about Alicia Keys: She's always taking risks with her style, something that too few stars seem to do these days. Her latest look centers on a jeweled hair accessory called a tikka. They're traditionally worn for special events in India, and if you like the Bollywood look, these tikkas aren't too expensive. Do you like this style choice, or could you do without it?
