How-To: Amanda Peet's Hipster Ponytail

At a party in New York feting her Gotham magazine cover, actress Amanda Peet rocked a downtown style, from her Thakoon dress to her berry lips. Her messy, heavy-banged ponytail is the perfect top to her 1940s-ish makeup. Total girl-crush chic!

STEP 1: Wash hair, skipping conditioner if your hair is anything but ultra-dry. No need to brush out unless your hair is really knotty.
STEP 2: Apply a little bit of a product that adds volume and texture with a little hold, like Bumble and bumble Styling Creme.
STEP 3: Allow hair to air-dry. If you're pressed for time, blow-dry with a diffuser, making sure to get some lift near the crown of your head. If you have thick hair, twist it before drying to keep it from getting too huge. If you have bangs, blow-dry them forward with a small round brush. Don't neglect the pieces around your ears.
STEP 4: Spritz a salt spray, like Charles Worthington Big Waves Texturizing Salt Spray, all over.
STEP 5: Back-comb around your roots and pull hair back into a ponytail. Secure it with an elastic like Blax Snag-Free Hair Elastics (for best no-slip results, use a brand new one and wrap around as many times as possible) about two or three inches above your brows. It may take a few tries to get the perfect bumpy, hipster-girl ponytail.
STEP 6: Back-comb around the elastic and rub the ends of the ponytail between your thumb and index finger.

Didja see Amanda Peet on last night's Letterman? She was there to promote the new X-Files movie, and she went with well-defined eyes just like she did at the Hancock premiere (Get the makeup tutorial here.)

I love this makeup look on her, but I'm just not feeling the hair. It looks a little messy and a bit stiff - which just doesn't flatter her gorgeous mane. What do you think of it? Something you'd want to try for yourself, or would you pass it up?

How-To: Amanda Peet's Hot Hot Hot Hancock Makeup

Amanda Peet hit this week's Los Angeles premiere of Hancock with sexy, sultry makeup. Her eyes looked like a feisty feline lined in a coppery brown and highlighted with this season's hottest color, gold. I've broken down her look so that you can recreate this sexy look in a few simple steps.

FACE: Begin with hydrated, clean skin and apply an eye cream as well as a primer to your face. Next, smooth on a tinted moisturizer and apply concealer to any red areas, under your eyes and to any uneven patches of skin. Then, dust a setting powder all over your face and neck.
CHEEKS: Sweep a soft pink powder blush such as Benefit Boxed Powder in Dandelion on the apples of your cheeks and pull the brush outwards towards your ears. Stay right on the cheekbone so that the color remains contained to your "smile zone."

EYES: To get Amanda's shimmery eyes, sweep a pale peach eye shadow from lid to brow all over. Next, line the inside rim and the top of your lashes with a glimmery brown liner like Urban Decay Eyeliner in Bourbon. Then, create another line (that you'll smudge) underneath using Honey. Next, apply two coats of black mascara.
LIPS: For a soft, fleshy pout, apply a lip balm over your lips and then apply a sheer pinky-nude lipstick like bareMinerals 100% Natural Lipcolor in Parfait.

The theme of this year's Costume Institute Gala is "Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy." Looks like Amanda Peet got the memo, because her sparkling hair accessory seems like it was lifted from Wonder Woman's jewelry box. A little bit of shimmery white shadow near her inner eyes brightens her look, but I'm not crazy about the lipstick - it seems a little dull for this otherwise icy look. Think it works for her?

I think they are all gorgeous without having to wear a ton of makeup. (And as a side note, I'm digging Amanda's schoolgirl grosgrain hair ribbon-so cute!) Cult Favorite: Nars Blush in Orgasm

Since this week is super blush-centric, I thought I'd pay tribute to the queen of all blushers: Nars Cosmetics Blush in Orgasm ($25). When it first launched, girls giggled then oohed and aahed over the sexy name. In time, product sales shot to the moon and the lengthy wait lists became no laughing matter - attaining Orgasm was nearly impossible! Luckily, production came through and now there's enough Orgasm to go around.

This blush has the largest following I have ever seen. It's a shimmery pinky-peach shade, typically reserved for those with olive skin tones. However, this particular color has a special je ne sais quoi that makes it universally flattering.

BELLASUGAR: When you look at a face you are about to make up, where do you draw your inspiration for a look?
BYRON WILLIAMS: The first thing I look at is their cheekbones, then I assess their eyes and their hair color and hair style.

BELLA: How do you determine the color palette that you are going to use?
BW: You can tell by skin tone, eye color and hair color what colors will look best on them. It is also important to consider what they are wearing and where they're going.

BELLA: Do you have signature look that you like to create?
BW: Yes, I am really inspired by Brigitte Bardot.

BELLA: What are your favorite brands to work with?
BW: For hair, my favorite brand is-of course-my line of shampoos, conditioners and styling products. As for makeup, I really like Vincent Longo.

BELLA: What are your favorite products to work with on the job?
BW: Byron Spirulina Hairspray ($24) and Byron Illuminating Mist ($18). As for makeup, definitely mascara and color for the cheeks.

BELLA: What are the best and worst parts of your job?
BW: The best part of my job is being able to express creativity freely every single day. And so far, there are no "worst" parts!
