ANTM Beauty Quiz: "Let's Go Surfing"

Oh boy. Where to begin with last night's episode? I appreciate Tyra's attempt to educate the girls on Hawaiian history, and huzzah for highlighting different cultural blends, but what a misguided idea for a photo shoot! You'd think that for as well-traveled as Tyra is, she'd know that painting light-skinned girls dark is all kinds of Bad Idea Jeans. I kept hoping for one of the models to pipe up and say, "I don't feel comfortable wearing brownface," but no dice. Because of the facepalm nature of the photo shoot, I give this episode my lowest short-legged cat rating of the season. (Look at him! Even he can't believe it.) My favorite Top Model (say that in autotune!) episodes are the ones that force the girls to shoot commercials. None will ever be as hilarious as Dominique's ("Brazilia!") or Jade's (fabulous!), but still, it's entertainment. Poor Laura stumbled over her lines due to her dyslexia, but wasn't it satisfying to see Erin's hubris blow up in her face? All in all, not a bad episode. Take the quiz to test your beauty recall.

Ah, what a visual treat: good ol' noted fashion photographer Nigel Barker. Sad to say, seeing him smile with his eyes (I refuse to use Tyra's made-up word for that) was one of the high points of this so-so episode. With the exception of adorkable Laura and her embarrassing "hood-rat" accent, the models didn't do many thrilling things. Yes! Looks like Top Model is back to its amusing glory. This episode had it all: Mr. Jay in clown makeup, Benny Ninja in shades, Lil Mama calling out things like "Hit it, boys!" and choreographed Jason Voorhees clones. What's not to love? Many moves were busted during the dance challenge, and the models posed with Cirque du Soleil cast members. Looks like we've solved the mystère of why this cycle had been so boring: it was merely short on camp. Were you watching close enough to score high on today's beauty quiz? Last night's episode was all about heavy product placement. And looking good while wearing a scarf over your face, apparently. Though I found its events slightly more engaging than last week's snoozefest, it's hard to care about a group of girls running around a big-box store* - especially when we've seen this challenge over and over. Dare I say the ANTM soda may be losing its fizz?

Still, at least we had no-eyebrows Erin shoving her way ahead, and Laura's granny couture continues to charm. That's enough to earn three short-legged Milos for this week's episode. Were you keeping an eye on the beauty looks? Test yourself.

Last night's episode was OK . . . ish, as Mr. Jay would say. While everyone can use some posing tips, the whole "Hey, they're short models!" angle is getting tired. I mean, my Munchkin cat is vertically challenged, too, but you don't see me comparing him to his longer-legged brethren all the time. On that note, I'm introducing a new rating system for the remainder of the cycle. The more Milos, the better the episode. Sadly, last night's earns only two shorties due to its lack of dramz, but there's always beauty trivia to keep us busy until next week. Were you paying attention to the hair and makeup looks? Even though it's the season of shorties, last night's episode was less about height (or lack thereof) and more about smize. You read that right, not size, smize. "What exactly is smize," you ask? Well, in true Tyra fashion, it's a new word that's she's created to represent smiling with your eyes. Beyond that, there was just enough campiness to keep last night's episode interesting (I mean super smize); and two models were eliminated, so there was definitely drama.
