Did Ugly Betty Really Need a Makeover?

Ever since news of Betty's "prettier" look next season broke, I have to admit that I've been a little bummed. It's not that I don't understand that characters evolve, it's just that Betty has always been so heroic because she's a person of substance, one who doesn't depend on her looks to make her life full. Ugly Betty is an import, a rewrite of a hit telenovela from Colombia, Betty La Fea. And in the original series, Betty suddenly lost her braces, got great hair, turned out to be gorgeous, and promptly married the Daniel character. It was a complete betrayal of everything that had been good about the show, and totally reconfirmed that the only way to be loved is by achieving the fashion world's most unrealistic beauty ideals. Never mind that Betty had proven herself a million times over - she was hot now, so she could be happy. I'm just hoping that our version doesn't fall into the same trap. I love Betty for who she is, and I think a great, cute guy should, too.

2009 Kids' Choice Awards: America Ferrera

America's so pretty in pink with a glossy sheen on her lips to bring out their natural hue. Speaking of natural, she wears minimal makeup and looks fresh with a rosy glow on her cheeks. Other than a touch of eyeliner, and possibly a sweep of mascara, her lids look fairly bare.

Her hairstyle's simple, too, falling in waves around her face. I think it's smart to go casual for the Kids' Choice Awards. Do you think her sweet style is extraordinary or way too ordinary?

2009 Screen Actors Guild Awards: America Ferrera

This Betty is definitely not ugly, as America Ferrera looks lovely walking down the red carpet at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. Her dark hair is parted with long layers swept across her face and pulled back into a loose, low ponytail resting over one shoulder. It offsets the gown's embellishment on the opposite side, wouldn't you say?

On the makeup front, she has dark liner – with reflective white shadow on inner corners – to make eyes pop and a touch of blush swept across her cheeks. Plus it's hard not to notice how those bold red lips contrast with her bright white smile. Does this look give you something to grin about, too?

2009 Golden Globe Awards: America Ferrera

Well, hello to you, too, America. This girl has one of the prettiest smiles in Hollywood and one of the best-shaped set of eyebrows of the night. Her hairstyle puts the focus on her eyes, and the slightly imperfect part adds to the charm.

America provides more evidence that gloss is being trounced by matte lipstick, and a light glow to her cheeks gives her a sun-kissed look. Her silvery shadow does match her dress rather well. Are you loving the similar shades or is it too matchy-matchy for your taste?

How-To: America Ferrera's Emmys Hairstyle

Did you love America Ferrera's hairstyle at the Emmys? You're in luck, because hairstylist Daniel Howell of Frédéric Fekkai salon is sharing how he came up with this gorgeous 'do for the Ugly Betty star. "Normally, the dress will start to dictate the hairstyle," he says of America's vintage gown. "Even though this is a vintage dress, it has a modern feel to it. That dictated a slightly vintage hairstyle, but we made it a bit softer."

Step one: Beginning with wet hair, use a heat-protecting product such as Fekkai Coiff Défense ($25), which Daniel used on America. Rough-dry hair without pulling on it, and mist before and after with a texturizing spray to add volume; Daniel used Fekkai Coiff Bouffant ($23), a spray-on styling gel.
Step two: Starting from the nape of the neck, section off pieces of hair approximately 1.5" thick and 1" wide. Wrap each piece around a small curling iron from the middle of the section to the root. The curls should all go in the same direction.
Step three: Now take the uncurled half of your hair and wrap it around a larger curling iron. "If you use only one size of curling iron," Daniel explains, "The weight of the hair is loose at the root and tighter at the end. This is the reverse; it's tighter by the root, loose and softer at the end."
Step four: Gently brush the curls out to create a pattern and defined wave. Using a clip, set the curls with hair spray. Follow with a shine spray if you like.

It's always a pleasure to see America Ferrera; she seems so sunny and pretty and lovely. And tonight, she's channeling Rita Hayworth with that wavy hair and 1940s-style red lipstick.
The key to making a bold lip color work is to pair it with a toned-down eye as America has done. A little bit of shimmer near the inner corner of the eyes draws attention but doesn't distract. What do you think of this classic look?

Trend Alert: Naked Nails

It used to be that if you wanted to be considered glamorous and put-together, you wouldn't dare walk out of the house with chipped nail polish - and now chipped nails have become a trend. Now, some celebs are taking it to the next level. With all of their wealth and fame, they gaily roam the streets with naked nails.

My guess is that they're either in between manicures, or they're enjoying a break from the stress of putting on and taking off polish. Then again, with a good buffing, naked nails can look shiny and healthy - much more chic than chipped polish, I think. Do you hope this trend sticks around, or do you prefer a more "finished" look?

God bless America. On Sunday evening, America Ferrera positively glowed on the red carpet - and not just because she has such amazing skin.

Her Monique Lhullier dress was demure, feminine, and fit all of her curves in the right places. Her hair was soft and her fresh and glamorous makeup look was created with Lancôme products by celebrity makeup artist Vanessa Scali.

Face: Begin with clean, well-moisturized skin. Add a touch of primer and smooth over the skin, then add some concealer and blend well. Next, cover your face and neck with foundation for a smooth finish.
Cheeks: Since America has a nice olive tone to her skin, you can skip the bronzer if you have a similar complexion. For this look, just add a touch of Magique Blush in Cinnamon Glaze to the apples of your cheeks and blend well with a big fluffy brush.
Eyes: Vanessa used neutral colors from the Couture Warms and Stylish Neutrals Palette to create a soft monochromatic look. Next, she applied Artliner Precision Point Eyeliner in Noir to her upper lashes to make America’s eyes pop. Lastly, she used a mascara base called CILS Booster XL before coating her lashes twice with High Définicils High Definition Mascara.
Lips: Vanessa opted for a soft burgundy-colored lip for America. She first applied a matte, waterproof lip pencil called Le Lipstique in Raisinberry and then she coated her lips with Color Fever Gloss in On Fire for shine and luminosity.
