Beauty Byte: Amy Winehouse Says Yes, Yes, Yes to a Beauty Line

If you're into winged eyeliner, you'll be happy to know that Amy Winehouse is expanding her talents far beyond the music business. The soulful jazz singer (who just went to visit her incarcerated hubby) is set to create a line of hair and makeup products that will include star items such as hairspray, head scarves - and of course, black liquid eyeliner.

An anonymous friend of Amy's explained the reasoning behind the line, saying:

Amy’s style has been copied by girls around [England] and there’s a lot of money to be made. It’s a very distinctive look. She wants to bring out a range of cosmetics and fashion products. There could be hairspray, head scarves, liquid eyeliner, perfume.

While I agree that Amy's look is distinctive, after her recent escapades, I'm not so keen on emulating it. But if Amy can get her personal life in order and go back to the glam Motown girl look she used to have, it'll be great to see her focusing on a healthy endeavor.

How-To: A Honey of a Hive

For those of you saucy Bella Donnas who strive for a hip beehive that stars such as Amy Winehouse are making chic again, here's an easy way to recreate this punkier and slightly messier version of the popular '50s hairstyle at home.

There's no doubt that you can use a wig, like makeup artist and hairstylist Yvette Beebe did here for Halloween. But if you want to rock a hive with your own hair in under five, you'll need:

a styling spray

a comb

a set of bobby pins

firm hold hairspray

To read my four-step guide on how to build a beehive at home, read more

STEP 1: If possible, don't wash your hair the day you plan to create this style. It's helpful if hair has a little bit of natural grease in it. The first step is to divide your hair into two sections: top and bottom.

STEP 2: Next, spritz the crown of your hair with a styling spray and then tease it underneath to create airy volume.

STEP 3: When your hair is nice and stiff from all of the back-combing, turn the bottom part of the hair that you just back-combed and get ready to pin it in place. But here's the crucial part - before you secure it, push the hair forward so that you create some height. When you've got that beehivey look, begin securing it in pieces with as many bobby pins as necessary so that it holds.

STEP 4: Lastly, gently comb any fly-away hairs back and mist the heck out of your entire head with a firm hold hairspray. It won't move much, but that's the point, isn't it?

Halloween How-To: Amy Winehouse

I'm hearing a lot of buzz about people going as Amy Winehouse this Halloween, which is a great idea-her look is unmistakable, and it's over-the-top fun. So when makeup artist Yvette Beebe offered to show me how to recreate her hair and makeup, I jumped at the chance to share the steps with you. Yvette has her own cosmetics line, and she really knows how to get a rocker-girl look down pat-not surprising, since she went on tour with Pink to give her that cool-girl look. (Be sure to check out my Q&A with Yvette next week.)

The best thing about this costume idea is that it's easy. As Yvette told me, the goal isn't to look precise and perfect; it's to look a little down-and-dirty, just the way Amy does on stage. For a gallery of really fun photos and Yvette's instructions, just read more

View 8 Photos ›

Face: Yvette started by evening out our model's skin with yb naked foundation stick. To create a gaunt-looking face, she contoured cheeks with yb pale bronzer.

Eye basics: Yvette started by lining the inner eyelids with black eyeliner. She then brushed the eyelids from lashes to brow with a barely-there, shimmery shade of pink. (She used yb shady in Pearly Jam.) She darkened the eyebrows by dipping a brush in yb shady powder in Elton Brown, then exaggerating the brows' width and thickness. Follow with a coat or two of black mascara.

Eyeliner : This is the hallmark of Amy's look. Yvette used yb crooked eyeliner in Raven. Here's the trick. The "point" of the liner should start at the outer edges of eyebrows. Starting there, draw down to the lashline, using your iris as the end point. Fill in the exaggerated cat-eye shape by moving down toward your eyelids (as opposed to starting near the lid and drawing upward.)

Lips : Amy's lips are almost always pale, so Yvette used a nearly nude gloss called yb lippy in Shy.

Hair: Yvette used two wigs to recreate Amy's signature hairdo. The first was a simple black wig. For the beehive, she covered a Marie Antoinette wig with black spray paint, then secured it to the other wig with bobby pins. (For another option, check out this video.)

The rest: Fake and temporary all the way! We went with a rocker-girl outfit for Amy, but jeans and a white tank top will work, too. After all, Amy's signature look is all about the hair and makeup.

How-To: Amy Winehouse's Beehive

A year ago, the only people talking about Amy Winehouse were music aficionados. Fast-forward to the present day, and she's become a sort of style icon. While her look isn't for everybody, I like the fact that she has her own individualistic look. Borrowing from girl groups such as The Supremes, she's transformed the beehive into a modern thing.

Amy uses hairpieces to create her 'hive, and unsurprisingly, they aren't cheap. But I've found a video that shows you how to recreate her look on a budget. Think of all of the Halloween fun you could have! To check out the video, read more

Build a Bouffant with Bust

I know some of you are already fans of Bust magazine (I'm willing to bet money that Krampalicious is a long-time reader like me). But since it's an independent magazine that isn't carried all over the place, it might be new to some of you. If you like smart stories and saucy sex advice and fashion spreads that have curvy girls as well as slim ones, you'll like it a lot.

Every issue has a quirky and fun beauty how-to story, and the new one is a big tease. Literally. It's a step-by-step guide to recreating Amy Winehouse's bouffant, and unsurprisingly, it's not a five-minute project. You know you're in for a hairy adventure when a story begins by suggesting that you purchase a hairpiece. Fortunately, the instructions are easy to follow, so even novices can figure it out.

Even if you're not as high-drama as Amy Winehouse, you could always work this 'do for Halloween, which isn't too far away. Check out this preview of the story below to get an idea of what the look is like. (The magazine isn't at big stores like Target, but it's easily available at indie bookstores, Borders, and Barnes and Noble). If you try out this hairstyle, let me know how it goes-I think it would be fun to post pictures of everyone's results!

View 2 Photos ›

Trend Alert: Heavily Lined Eyes

Heavily lined eyes have been a part of beauty for decades. The trend began in the 60's mod era, and we can see it recreated by Sienna Miller playing Edie Sedgwick in Factory Girl. Since then, it's made appearances in the 70's, in bright colors in the 80's and again in black in the 90's. Now in 2007, stars are wearing this look on the red carpet.

Lined eyes make a strong statement and are usually seen in shades of black, gray and slate. You can either create a cat eye with a winged tip, a smoky eye, a smudged rocker look or even create a dramatic and dark lower line with a hint of metallic like we saw for the Fall 2007 Luca Luca Show. Nowadays you can't go wrong with a sexy, heavy eye-and that's the bottom line.

Source

Love It or Hate It? Amy Winehouse's Neo-'60s Style

Singer Amy Winehouse is getting attention not just for her old-school Motown tunes, but for her funky beehive hair and winged eyeliner, too.

Each year, there are several It costumes from which to choose. Last year it was Sarah Palin, the year before that it was Amy Winehouse, and 10 years ago, I seem to recall lots of Monica Lewinskys strutting their stuff. This year, if I had to wager, I'd say we'll be seeing several Kate Gosselins, Anna Wintours, Michael Jacksons, and Rihannas - just to name a few. In the meantime, here are a few traditional (and not-so-traditional) ideas to get you in the spooky spirit. Which ones are your favorites?

The 2009 Skinnies Honor Epidermal Excellence

Awards season is in full swing, and along with the red-carpet galas, there's one less-publicized awards ceremony: the Skinnies. Every year, San Francisco dermatologist Dr. Vail Reese looks at the world's most famous faces, keeping an eye on their skin's changes. In years past, he's highlighted Angelina's acne and Miley Cyrus's scars, but this year brings a new crop of winners.

I won't ruin the surprises for you, but I will say that we finally find out what was likely up with Amy Winehouse's skin last year. Dr. Reese doesn't treat these celebrities, but he provides an entertaining way to learn about various skin quirks and disorders. Check out the winners and let me know if you think anyone was left out.

Bella Donna: Ronnie Spector

Girl groups from the Spice Girls to Le Tigre might not exist were if not for Ronnie Spector, the lead singer of 1960s girl band The Ronettes and first wife of murder suspect (and alleged nutball) Phil Spector. During a time when multiracial, all-female bands (Ronnie and her sister-cum-bandmate Estelle's mother was black and Native American, their father Irish) were uncommon, The Ronettes topped charts. Their most famous song, "Be My Baby" (yes, from Dirty Dancing) has been covered or sampled by bands from The Beatles to Concrete Blonde to Amy Winehouse. Ronnie (born Veronica Yvette Bennett) released a memoir in 2004 titled Be My Baby: How I Survived Mascara, Miniskirts, and Madness.

The Ronettes began performing together as The Darling Sisters in 1959, and when the oldest member was 18, the group won a talent show at The Apollo. While in line for The Peppermint Lounge (a Manhattan disco owned by the Genovese crime family) a couple of years later, the trio were mistaken for a no-show band and ended up on stage. Before long, they hooked up with producer Phil Spector, who is credited with getting them to adopt a more rocker style by wearing beehives and heavy eyeliner.

View 5 Photos ›

For more about Ronnie's style, read more.

To reach the heights of volume only a soulful singer can, spray on a root lifter like John Frieda Luxurious Volume Lavish Lift Root Lifter ($5.79) and back comb away. Complete the look with winged black liquid eyeliner. One that's packaged like a felt-tip pen, such as CK Calvin Klein Electric Edge Liquid Eyeliner Marker Pen ($16) makes getting bad-girl style a breeze.
