Put a Modern Twist on a '90s Brick-Red Lip

When I think of mustard-colored clothing paired with a brick-red lip, I can't help but think to the days of the early 1990s, when shows like The Fresh Prince of Bel Air and Saved by the Bell ruled the airwaves. But at yesterday's Power of Women luncheon in LA, Anne Hathaway proved that the dated color combo doesn't have to be so dated after all. By keeping the brown undertones associated with a traditional brick-red lipstick by the wayside, and going for a shade with both light red and golden undertones instead, this version of brick red is fresh and modern. Lisa Turtle would approve. To get the look, use more than one lip product to create your own custom-made blend. Even the coolest of us all can rock this shade, thanks to the flattering specks of gold tones and soft-red tint. Here are some suggestions below:

With that big, voluminous hair, I'm reminded of Anne's character in Brokeback Mountain, although this version is more refined, channeling a sophisticated, '60s-era vibe.

The majority of her colleagues have been all about the dramatic makeup looks tonight, but Anne opts for a simply pretty palette, putting all of the focus on her heavily-lined eyes and amped up locks. What do you think? Are you pumped?

What I like most about a red lip is that it doesn't have to be too fussy, as the ladies of the 2009 red carpet prove. Whether it was subtle and matte like Anne Hathaway or bold and raspberry-toned à la Alicia Keys, it just goes to show you that red-toned lipstick is always en vogue. How-To: Anne Hathaway's Makeup at the 2009 Oscars

According to the polls, you were loving Anne Hathaway's classic look on the red carpet. The red lips, porcelain complexion, and black liner complemented her sparkling Armani Privé gown. Do you like Anne's makeup? Check out the details below and find out which Lancôme products were used to create her look:

Eyes: Lightly sweep Color Design Eye Shadow in Ciel du Soir ($16.50) on the eyelid and apply Le Crayon Khôl in Black Ebony ($23.50) to the upper lash line. Smudge to blend any harsh lines and then add several coats of Lancôme Ôscillation Mascara ($34) to the lashes.
Cheeks: Apply Blush Subtil in Sheer Amourose ($29.50) to the apples of the cheeks for a splash of color.
Lips: For a stained lip, use Color Fever Lipstick in Brickhouse ($25).

Nominated for her role in Rachel Getting Married, Anne Hathaway looked casual and cool at today's Independent Spirit Awards. Maybe it's the fact that I can't stop staring at her wide eyes or even wider grin that makes it almost hard to notice how decidedly bare she is today. Her hair is straight and simple. Her eyes are lightly lined, with just a touch of mascara. Her lips are nearly nude. What do you think? Is Anne too plain, or fabulously flawless?

How-To: Anne Hathaway's Hair at the Golden Globes

Anne Hathaway's alabaster skin, raspberry lips, and pulled-back chignon were a hit last night. I already gave you the details on her classic makeup, and now I've got the how-to on that right-on-trend slick, chic hair. Adir Abergel of Frederic Fekkai styled Hathaway's hair with clean lines and clean texture. Take a look at his technique below:
Apply Coiff Bouffant Lifting & Texturizing Spray Gel ($23) from roots to ends. Next, comb hair into a very deep side part and thoroughly dry with a large round brush. Then, gather hair in a low ponytail, applying Magnifique Ultra-Light Finishing Creme ($23) for shine and texture. Secure with an elastic holder at the nape, and tuck the ponytail underneath. Some bobby pins and hair pins will keep it in place. To complete this old Hollywood look, spray it with Fekkai Sheer Hold Hairspray ($23).

How-To: Anne Hathaway's Makeup at the 2009 Golden Globes

The majority of you were loving Anne Hathaway's red-lipped red-carpet look. And guess what? We've got the scoop from celeb makeup artist Kate Lee on how she created this "it" girl's classic look. Keeping the star's navy chiffon gown in mind, Lee focused on the eyes and lips for a striking effect. Check out the how-to below:

Eyes: After applying dark liner to the base of the lashes, Lee swept a dark shadow from the lash line upwards using a small brush. Next, Chanel Soft Touch Eye Shadow in Slate ($28.50) was applied to the crease and lower lash line. For the final touch, a Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler ($19) gave lashes some drama, along with several layers of Chanel Inimitable Waterproof Mascara in Noir ($30).
Brows: For Anne's defined brows, Lee used Lancôme Le Crayon Poudre in Brunet ($23).

Complexion: For a fresh look, Lancôme Effacernes Concealer in Ivoire ($27.50) was applied under the eyes.

Cheeks: Once Chanel Powder Blush in Nude ($42) was swept on the cheeks, Lee then used Lancôme Absolute Powder in Absolute Peche ($52) to the top of the cheek bones, jaw, and clavicle.

Lips: Lee applied a neutral liner that matched Anne's lips, along with Chanel Hydrabase Lipstick in Lotus Rouge $28.50, making sure to blend any harsh lines.

Actress Anne Hathaway's career has been red-hot as of late, so it's quite fitting the star, who is up for a Golden Globe tonight, is red-lipped on the red carpet.

While her look in her nominated role from Rachel Getting Married is all choppy hair and dark makeup, Hathaway is refined and elegant tonight with porcelain skin, bright lips, and a traditional updo.
