What do you get when one of Hollywood's most popular and powerful A-listers releases a fragrance? In Bloom ($34), the new Avon scent from Reese Witherspoon. Over the course of two years, the self-proclaimed girly-girl was involved in practically all aspects of the perfume-making experience, from helping to select the fragrance's notes to providing input on her inaugural scent's packaging, bottle design, and name. In a Bad Economy, The Avon Lady is Calling

When the economy tanks, what's a woman to do? For some, selling makeup is the next step. Direct sales of cosmetics and skin care are on the rise, with companies such as Avon and Mary Kay seeing a surge of new representatives as the recession continues. In March, Avon reached the largest number of reps in the company's history, and Mary Kay has 22% more consultants than it did at this time last year.

What's the draw? Flexible schedules and the potential income, as usual. "I could go and work at a local fast food restaurant and make $6.55 an hour," says laid-off worker Tammy Jonsson, adding that she can make up to 10 times that much through Mary Kay. Although she's found another full-time job, she continues to spend about 10 hours per week selling cosmetics. That might not be enough to earn a famous Pink Cadillac, but a much-needed income boost isn't a bad consolation prize.

Beauty Byte: Reese Enters the Bloomin' Fragrance Biz

When it comes to fragrance launches this year, Avon has had quite the star-studded journey. Since last June, the impressively affordable cosmetics brand has launched Christian Lacroix Noir, Courteney Cox-endorsed Spotlight, and Patrick Dempsey's Unscripted. And now, as a two-year Avon global ambassador, it's Reese Witherspoon's turn.

The new fragrance, dubbed In Bloom by Reese Witherspoon ($34 to $59), makes its official debut in November, and features top notes of Georgia peach, crisp greens, and tea leaves; middle notes of magnolias, star gardenia, and night-blooming jasmine; and base notes of cashmere woods, hypnotic florals, and amber wood crystals. Packaged in a rounded glass bottle with an elaborate flower atop, the Oscar-winning actress chose to monogram the champagne-toned box and limited-edition silver charmed bottle. "I monogram everything because I am Southern - it’s a compulsion," she quipped to WWD.

Inspiration behind the sensual, romantic scent came from Reese's Southern background and her 9-year-old daughter Ava's opinion. "I asked her which one smelled most like me." She also drew upon other family memories for insight. "Definitely gardenia is a big thing for me because my father - every Mother’s Day or on my birthday - would buy small bouquets or corsages for my mother and I," she added. "I thought you just pick a fragrance and it’s easy. But there were all these different levels of creating a scent that were new to me, but really fun and exciting," said the fun-loving star. Six Lipstick Tips From Jillian Dempsey

You'll know from my So I Married a Makeup Artist quiz that Grey's Anatomy's Patrick Dempsey is married to none other than celebrity makeup artist and Avon Global Creative Director Jillian Dempsey. And yesterday, I sat in on a call featuring the talented lady, who has worked with Kate Winslet on her cherry-lipped Golden Globes look, along with her shimmery-eyed Oscars style, too.

Over the next few months, Avon will be coming out with a few new lip products (more on those later), but first, I've got some tips from Jillian for making your lips stand out. Find out what they are when you read more.

The "it" color: For Spring and Summer, you can't go wrong with a coral shade, or variations of coral, like pink and orange tones. Of course, nudes and naturals are always excellent choices, too.
Follow the line: One of the biggest mistakes women make is creating a hard line with their lip products. "For best results, blend your lip liner with a touch of lip gloss so there are no hard edges showing under your gloss," she says.
Consider the shape: If you have thinner lips, a dark berry tone will only make them look smaller. Go with a neutral tone for fuller looking lips à la Angelina Jolie.
Play up the pout: When applying a lip plumping product, like Avon's new Utra Color Rich Extra Plump Lipstick ($6), "To complement the look, go for wide eyes with lots of black mascara and keep cheeks neutral so lips stand out," advises Jillian.
Sheer genius: Create a sheer effect by using your fingers to dab on your lipstick.
Choosing a shade: When selecting a shade to wear, Jillian looks at both eye color and what the person is wearing as her guide. She also mentions that it's important to wear what makes you feel comfortable, and that most women easily gravitate toward what colors naturally work for them. Call it women's intuition, if you will.

Courteney Cox Steps into the Spotlight

2009 is shaping up to be a great year for Courteney Cox. She's appearing on Scrubs, working on a new sitcom, and starring as the face of Avon's forthcoming fragrance, Spotlight. Last night, Courteney was part of a cocktail party to celebrate the scent, and I was lucky enough to hear what she had to say about her first foray into the fragrance world. Read on:

On what she loves about Spotlight: "It’s not overpowering, and it’s feminine. I don’t like overpowering scents. I like when people have to get close to smell you. [...] I knew that I loved Spotlight as soon as I smelled it. It’s just perfect - it’s floral, it’s citrus ... and I’m really particular, I mean, to a fault."

On why she chose to work with Avon: "I love the way they care about their employees. They stand for such important things and are just so charitable. Until I met with the company, I didn’t know everything they did, how much they give back. I was like, 'Wow, I want to be a part of their organization.' And the scent was perfect. Had the scent not been good, had the company not been great, I might not have done it. But it worked out perfectly. [....] It was the perfect marriage."

Fragrance Review: Patrick Dempsey Unscripted

Back in April, I told you about Patrick Dempsey's collaboration with Avon. "Not another celeb fragrance," I thought. Flash forward to present day and Patrick Dempsey Unscripted ($32) has arrived. And it's surprisingly delightful, unexpected . . . dare I say, McSexy?

The fragrance is reminiscent of classic colognes, but with a modern, crisp feel. You might even say it could qualify as unisex, somehow managing to have a substantive, yet light, airy feel all at once. Top notes of cardamom and black peppercorn provide a clean spiciness; Middle notes of fig and lavender impart a soft, sweet characteristics; And bottom notes of leatherwood, patchouli heart, vetiver, and musk lend to the earthy, outdoorsy, and lingering quality.

Avon Puts Courteney Cox in the Spotlight

You might know that actress Courteney Cox currently serves as celeb spokesperson for the antiaging skincare line, Kinerase. Well, now she's headed to the fragrance category.

Nope, the botox dabbling Cox isn't joining the already crowded bundle of celebrity perfume makers. She is, however, set to be the face of Spotlight, ($22.50) a new fragrance from Avon.

According to WWD, the juice will have a fresh, oriental scent with top notes of mandarin, shining silver, and bergamot; middle notes of mimosa, tuberose absolute, and white freesia; and bottom notes of sandalwood, cashmere, white vanilla musk, and vetiver.

Want to be in the Spotlight? Fragrance Review: Bond Girl 007

Thinking you might want to get in on some secret spy action? Well, here's your chance. Avon's got a new James Bond-inspired fragrance called Bond Girl 007 ($30). And though smelling the hunky Daniel Craig might not be so bad, you won't have to worry about smelling like the manly 007 himself. This one's just for the ladies.

Produced in conjunction with the release of Quantum of Solace, the 22nd (whoa!) Bond flick, the bottle is shaped like the female form with a grenade-like gizmo for the cap. It's both sweet and sexy, just like the fragrance itself.

Upon initial whiff, there's an intense, pastry-like quality from the peach and orange notes. Jasmine, orchid, and freesia lend a bit of fresh, feminine qualities, while wood, amber, and patchouli round it off for a somewhat musky, deeper base.

All in all, Bond Girl 007 isn't my personal favorite, but it isn't displeasing either. If you're into sweet scents with a hint of warmth, I'd give it a shot. Bang.
