2009 Fall New York Fashion Week: Barbie

The worlds of fashion and beauty are traditionally youth-obsessed, but today's most crowded show featured a 50-year-old muse. The tents were swarming with people (including quite a few little girls) who wanted to peek at the doll's runway show. Fashion's heavy hitters, including Calvin Klein and Alexander Wang, created outfits inspired by the doll. And the hair and makeup, as you'll see, is equally dolled-up. (Full disclosure: While Barbie is a sponsor of BellaSugar during Fashion Week, I'm being honest in saying that this show seemed to be on everyone's lips - it's been the most fun one by far.) Stila Lets You Get Your Hands on Barbie's Cans

Throughout her 50 years, Barbie has been a gymnast, a doctor, and, um, a Harley Davidson rider. Next up for the fashion doll? A makeup collaboration with Stila.

While the partnership officially kicks off in February to celebrate Barbie's 50th, the Barbie Loves Stila Beauty Cans' ($40) pre-launch is on Sephora.com today. The limited-edition cans (only 10,000 were created) are inspired by Barbie looks from the past five decades. Plans are also in action to launch a Talking Palette that walks you through a makeup look, along with an expanded collection this Fall. Look for the four Barbie Loves Stila Beauty Cans at Sephora’s 5th Avenue store in New York, Sephora.com, and international Sephora locations. Here's the rundown:

#1 Ponytail Doll (1959): Ponytail Lip Color (a red shade), Liquid Eye Liner, a compact with two eye shadows and a cheek color, and a Look Book.
Malibu Doll (1971): Malibu Lip Glaze (a pale pink), Lash Visor Mascara in Black, a compact with two eye shadows and a bronzer, and a Look Book.
Foxy Doll (1980): Foxy Lip Glaze, Lash Visor Mascara, a compact with two eye
shadows and a cheek color, and a Look Book.
Jewel Doll (2000): Jewel Lip Glaze (a bright pink), Multi-Effect Mascara, a compact with two eye shadows and a cheek color, and a Look Book.

Beauty Byte: Barbie Gets Dolled Up With Stila

Back in the 80's Barbie had a line of kiddie cosmetics I remember quite well. Then, in 2007, MAC released a Barbie-themed makeup collection. And now? The fashion doll is about to dabble in the cosmetics realm again with a recently announced collaboration with Stila.

According to WWD, the limited-edition collection will launch next month at Sephora stores (including international locations and online) and Sephora's Fifth Avenue store in New York. Just in time to celebrate the fashion doll's 50th birthday, the fun and flirty collection will include four "Decades of Beauty" cans ($40): Ponytail Doll, which commemorates the first Barbie in 1959; Malibu Barbie, from 1971; Foxy Doll, in honor of the first African-American doll released in 1980; and Jewel Doll, from 2000.

Also in the works . . . those nifty talking palettes from Stila - Barbie style, of course - a Barbie fashion show featuring Stila products at New York Fashion Week next month, and a Barbie beauty program/expanded collection for Fall 2009. Way to keep it going for half a century, Miss Barbie.

Beauty Flashback: Barbie Makeup Fun

Last year, MAC released a Barbie-themed makeup collection. It's been out of stores since last spring, but a few pieces are available on eBay.

But before the MAC collaboration, Barbie had her own line of cosmetics for little girls. Believe it or not, I had no interest in playing with the color cosmetics, but I remember that vial of Barbie "perfume" well. It was mostly water, but I felt very grown-up whenever I splashed it on.

So check out this early-'80s clip. Apparently, playing with toy cosmetics makes young Erin Fetherston lookalikes talk like Upper East Side dowagers. And don't blame me if the jingle gets stuck in your head.

A Barbie Store Opens in Buenos Aires. Is It Good for Little Girls?

It's no secret that little girls are growing up fast these days. (Ahem, Nair.) But with the opening of the world's first Barbie store, fast just got faster. Located in Buenos Aires, it's a "fashion-tainment" boutique that specializes in giving girls the full-blown Barbie experience. Selling dolls isn't the point of this store; instead, it's about making the girls into Barbie:

The $7-an-hour playroom inside the store has toys and dolls, costumes, makeup and jewelry, and a small catwalk for girls to parade on under disco lights. The store also includes a beauty salon, where girls can get everything from a glamorous hairstyle to a painted butterfly on a cheek, plus a coffee shop. And the Barbie playroom is available for parties, starting at around $650.

Targeting girls ages 3 to 9, the Barbie store draws up to 150 children each day-with many girls coming in every single day to get done up.

I'm all for little girls playing and having fun, but I can't help but think that they're a little young to be wearing makeup and having their hair done. Plus, Barbie isn't high on my "awesome role models" list. This is the same doll who infamously declared, "Math is hard!" a few years ago. Her body proportions are unrealistic, too: According to ANRED, if she were a real person, she'd be six feet tall, weigh 101 pounds, and have measurements of 39-19-33.
